TV licence fee revenue down €58m after RTÉ payment scandal, new figures show
TV licence fee revenue has decreased by over €58m in the last two years. New figures confirm that revenue from the licence plummeted following a range of financial scandals engulfing RTÉ in the summer of 2023, which sparked a wave of non-payments. Before the scandals, between July 2021 and June 2023, some 1.9m people paid the €160 annual fee, resulting in revenue of €306m. This included 1.7m people who renewed the licence, as well as 243,179 first-time purchases. However, figures for the two-year period after the RTÉ controversies, between July 2023 and June 2025, reveal revenue decreased by €58.4m compared to the previous two years. Some 1.55m people paid the licence fee, a decrease of more than 365,0000 people. This resulted in revenue of €247.6m, a decrease of 19% compared to the preceding two years. There has, however, been a slight increase in the number of people paying the fee since the Government announced a new funding arrangement for RTÉ on July 24, 2024. Between July 2022 and June 2023, some 947,999 paid the €160 fee. This fell to 761,762 payments between July 2023 and June 2024. In the last 12 months, the number of licences bought increased to 785,595. However, this is still 17% below the pre-scandal levels. This year to date, some 376,140 people have paid the licence fee. Figures for the two-year period after the RTÉ controversies, between July 2023 and June 2025, reveal revenue decreased by €58.4m compared to the previous two years. Picture: Colin Keegan The figures were provided to Fine Gael TD Micheál Carrigy following a parliamentary question to media minister Patrick O'Donovan. The RTÉ scandals included revelations that former Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 over six years that had not been declared by RTÉ in its annual declaration of top-paid stars' salaries. It later transpired that money had been paid to Mr Tubridy as part of a three-year 'side deal' that would see Renault pay him €75,000 per year. They pulled out of the agreement after the first year, with RTÉ paying the remaining €150,000. Subsequent Oireachtas committee hearings heard of extravagant spending at RTÉ, including €5,000 on flip-flops, memberships to swanky London clubs, and a failed musical based on The Late Late Toy Show. Mr O'Donovan has reconvened the interdepartmental technical working group (TWG) on the TV licence to 'examine potential enhancements to the television licence'. 'I will consider the report of the TWG when I receive it and decide the next steps,' he added. It was reported last month that the number of people being taken to court or prosecuted for non-payment had dropped. In 2022, An Post made 13,709 summons applications for non-payment and pursued 7,263 court cases. There were 13,198 summons applications and 6,555 court cases in 2023. However, last year this fell to 12,229 summons applications and 5,392 court cases. The Government announced plans last year to provide RTÉ with €725m in funding over three years. Media minister Catherine Martin confirmed that the TV licence would remain in place, with the State providing top-up funding to ensure that RTÉ had a certain amount of ring-fenced funding each year.

Urgent recall issued for almost 200 ready-made meals sold in Irish supermarkets
Almost 200 pre-made dinners and side items sold in major Irish supermarkets have been pulled from shelves due to food safety fears.. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced this week that 198 ready made meals produced by Ballymaguire Foods and sold in Tesco, Centra, Supervalu, Aldi and elsewhere have been recalled due to the possible presence of a harmful bacteria. The recalls affects a range of popular ready-made meals, which may pose serious health risks if consumed as they could contain Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially deadly bacterium that causes food poisoning. The FSAI said: "Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. The ready-made dinners were sold in Supervalu, Tesco, Alsi and Centra (file photo) (Image: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin) "Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days." As a result, the FSAI is advising all shoppers to immediately check their fridge and freezers for any affected products and bin them immediately. The food safety watchdog said that all pack sizes, all batch codes and all use-by dates with an establishment approval number of IE 4008 EC were recalled and that recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale. Wholesalers/distributors have also been requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers. The full list of all the impact products can be found on the FSAI website here. Former sports figure in court accused of sexual abuse
A former sports figure extradited from the US to face multiple allegations of the sexual abuse of girls in Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s was remanded in custody yesterday. The 77-year-old man, who cannot be named due to the nature of the charges, is facing 79 allegations of offences relating to the alleged abuse of four girls. The case features 78 charges of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape at various locations in Co. Dublin, including Dún Laoghaire, Killiney and Blackrock, from 1971 to 1981. Pic: Colin Keegan, Collins, Dublin. The girls were minors, aged between eight and 15. Following extradition proceedings at the request of the Irish authorities, the man was arrested at Terminal 2 in Dublin Airport at 5.56 am yesterday. He was then brought to appear before Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court. Dressed in a pale green jumper, grey shorts, white socks and brown slip-on shoes, he sat silently in his wheelchair throughout the brief hearing. He has not indicated a plea, and there was no application for bail. State solicitor Rory Staines told Judge Finan that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the man face 'trial on indictment in the Central Criminal Court'. It is expected that the prosecution's book of evidence will be ready to be served on the accused when he appears again at the District Court next Tuesday, July 29. Legal aid was granted after defence solicitor Tracy Horan said: 'He is not working; he has no assets.'

Gardaí investigate if fatal stabbing of man in Dublin is linked to local dispute
An investigation is underway after the 34-year-old victim died following the assault at a house in the Shancastle area of Dublin 22 Gardai at the scene on Shancastle Close, Clondalkin where a man in his 30s was stabbed Photo: Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin. Detectives are investigating if a man was stabbed to death in Dublin following a spate of attacks overnight linked to a local dispute. An investigation is underway after the 34-year-old victim died following the assault at a house in the Shancastle area of Dublin 22. Emergency services were alerted to the scene at around 5.50am and rushed the male to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A suspect aged in his late 30s has been arrested as part of the investigation and remained in garda custody this afternoon. The Sunday World has learned that gardaí are also investigating a number of incidents in the area prior to the fatal assault and are probing if they are all connected. This includes a suspected arson, criminal damage and a car being rammed, which are all alleged to have occurred locally in the hours before the assault. One source said: 'At this stage all these reported incidents appear to be connected and are linked to a local feud in the area. 'One line of inquiry is that the fatal assault was an escalation from what happened earlier in the night'. At one crime scene on Shancastle Park, not far from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, gardaí were on Monday afternoon conducting house-to-house enquiries on the street where a house had suffered fire damage in a suspected arson attack. The front door of the property and the hallway inside were badly damaged. Members of the Garda Technical Bureau were carrying out a forensic examination of the scene. Less than 250m away a separate garda cordon had been erected on the corner of Shancastle Close and Shancastle Avenue where the 34-year-old man had been attacked. A large sheet of black plastic sheeting covered a bloodstain on the footpath outside one house where a car could be seen in the driveway with its rear window shattered. Gardaí maintained a presence at both scenes, and floral tributes had been left at the scene of the fatal attack. In a statement gardaí said they were alerted to an incident at a home in the Shancastle area at around 5.50am on Monday. The man was found unresponsive and brought to John Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, where he was later pronounced dead. The scene is preserved while gardaí carry out an examination. The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have both been notified, with a postmortem set to be carried out. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been set up at Lucan garda station. A Family Liaison Officer will be assigned to support the family of the victim. The man who was arrested in connection with the investigation is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a garda station in the Dublin area.
