Govt bans cultivation of Black Burley for current agricultural season
GUNTUR: Bapatla District Collector J Venkata Murali has announced a complete ban on the cultivation of Black Burley tobacco for the current agricultural season, citing falling prices and reduced company purchases that have impacted farmers. Speaking at a review meeting held at the Collectorate on Wednesday, attended by officials from Markfed, the Agriculture Department, and private buyers, the Collector said the move aims to protect farmers from further losses. 'In recent years, excess production due to corporate assurances has led to sharp price drops, hurting farmer income. Many companies have now withdrawn from procurement,' he said. The Collector warned that even raising seedlings in nurseries is prohibited. Violators will face strict action, including crop destruction and possible legal consequences. Farmers who have already cultivated the crop can sell it to private buyers, but are advised not to bring bundles with more than 20% moisture content to procurement centres. The Bapatla Colelctor assured tobacco farmers of full government support, stating, 'We are committed to ensuring that every last leaf is sold. Trust the administration and don't fall prey to fear.'

Thanjavur officials convince family, help Class 12 girl join college under Naan Mudhalvan scheme
A Class 12 student from a fishing community, who chose to support her family, was persuaded to join college at a special grievance redress and guidance session held under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme in Thanjavur on Wednesday. The meeting, part of the initiative's fourth phase, was chaired by District Collector P. Priyanka Pankajam at the Collectorate. The programme, which began on June 9, is aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education and career opportunities. During the session, K. Lavanya, a student of Adirampattinam Government Girls Higher Secondary School, became the focus of attention. Despite scoring 415 marks in the Class 12 board examinations, she was asked to take up work to support her family's income. Her school teacher Jepar Kavi, along with Chief Educational Officer Madhavan and school mentors, intervened in the matter. They met the family members and persuaded them to support Lavanya's educational aspirations. Within a brief time, Lavanya was admitted to course at an Arts and Science College, close to her residence.

Collector reviews arrangements for Aadi Amavasai at Memalayanur temple
District Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman reviewed the arrangements being made for the 'Aadi Ammavasai' festival at the Melmalayanur Angalamman temple. Chairing a meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, Mr. Rahman reviewed the arrangements being put in place for ensuring public transport, drinking water supply, medical support and other amenities for the benefit of the devotees. The Collector said that entry of heavy vehicles would be restricted on Thursday. Sanitary workers would be deployed in adequate numbers to ensure cleaning operations round-the-clock. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to regulate the crowd and CCTVs have been installed in addition to the control room, he added. Officials from the departments of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE), Transport, Rural Development, Health and Family Welfare and senior officers from the Police department participated.

Hawker stalls cause traffic chaos at busy Vij junctions
Vijayawada: The growing menace of unauthorized hawker stalls at busy junctions in Vijayawada is causing severe traffic congestion and raising public safety concerns. With no designated vending zones and hundreds of makeshift stalls mushrooming across main roads, the situation has reached a tipping point, prompting the Andhra Pradesh high court to intervene. Currently, Vijayawada is home to 17,246 registered street vendors, as per official data from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC). However, authorities have failed to implement the Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vendors Act, 2014, which mandates the creation of Red, Amber, and Green vending zones. In the absence of these zones, street vending has become free-for-all, with vendors occupying key roads and footpaths. The issue has escalated on Besant Road, where the number of hawkers has surged dramatically, prompting local shop owners to launch a campaign titled 'Save Besant Road'. A subsequent petition filed in the high court has led to directions to control illegal vending and stop issuing new ID cards until further arrangements are made. Similar traffic snarls are seen near the Collectorate on Museum Road, and at DRDA Junction near Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Music College, where hawkers occupy both sides of the roads. Vital city arteries like Bandar Road and Eluru Road are choked during peak hours due to encroachments, with motorists voicing frustration over the inaction of traffic police and civic officials.

Sanitary workers hailed for keeping Nellore city garbage-free
Nellore: District Collector O Anand has lauded that the role of sanitary workers as most crucial in keeping Nellore garbage-free city. As part of ongoing Swachh Andhra Divas (SAD), the Collector has felicitated 25 sanitary workers working in municipalities and panchayats in a special programme organised at SR Sankaran Hall at the Collectorate here on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that he felt happy on felicitating the sanitary workers as they are rendering remarkable services in the interest of protecting the people's health despite facing severe health hazards. The Collector said that after the declaration of SAD six months ago, the government's sanitary workers in both municipalities and panchayats, were rendering invaluable services by hitting on to the roads right from wee hours. On the occasion, the Collector urged the staff working in municipalities and panchayats to create awareness among people on segregation of dry and wet waste. He said that a toll-free number 1800 425 0017 has been set up at the Collectorate to receive complaints regarding drinking water and sanitation in the municipalities and panchayats in the district and promptly redress them. On this occasion, the Collector also felicitated the representatives of Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) G Chitti Babu, SK Gulam Shafi Ahmadh and Gaddam Satish. Nellore Municipal Commissioner Y O Nandan, District Panchayat Officer Sridhar Reddy and others were present.
