USC baseball legend Mark McGwire named to College Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2025
This week, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2025 class. Among this year's inductees was a name quite familiar to USC baseball fans: the legendary slugger Mark McGwire. Per USC's press release, 'McGwire, who was named the National Player of the Year in 1984, was not only one of USC's greatest hitters, but also had a stellar career on the mound during his three collegiate seasons at USC under legendary Head Coach Rod Dedeaux. 'At the plate, McGwire hit .334 in his 149 career games, compiling 54 home runs, 150 RBI, 135 runs scored and an 1.166 OPS. His 32 home runs in 1984 are still the single season record for USC, as are his 216 total bases from that season. McGwire's 54 career homers and .718 career slugging percentage are both all-time career records at USC as well. 'In addition to playing first for the Trojans, McGwire spent two seasons on the mound at USC (1982-83), posting a 2.93 ERA in 83.0 career innings as both a reliever and starter. He struck out 57 batters, with two saves and a career record of 7-5.' Of course, McGwire is best known for his historic MLB career, most notably his record-setting 70-home run season in 1998. However, due to his prominent role in MLB's steroids scandal, he is not a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. While McGwire does not seem to have a path to Cooperstwon anytime soon, at least he will be able to add one hall of fame to his resume.

UNC baseball ace named finalist for National Pitcher of the Year award
UNC baseball ace named finalist for National Pitcher of the Year award All year long, one pitcher for North Carolina has dominated over all others. Undefeated ace Jake Knapp, already named ACC Pitcher of the Year, is now one of five finalists for the National Pitcher of the Year from the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Knapp joins Gabe Craig from Baylor, Jacob Morrison from Coastal Carolina, Zan Taylor from UNC Wilmington, and Dylan Volantis from Texas. Three of the five finalists for the NPOY award hail from the Carolinas. Knapp finished his 2025 campaign with a 13-0 record and a 1.98 ERA. In 14 starts and 15 appearances, he threw 95.1 innings, allowing 21 earned runs on 63 hits with 85 strikeouts. Opposing batters hit .186 against the star pitcher. Knapp was tied with Zane Taylor for the third lowest ERA in the nation, just a hundreth over Evan Dempsey from FGCU. The Tar Heels ace also led all of college baseball with 13 wins on the season, tied with Ricky Ojeda from UC Irvine; however, Ojeda lost a game, Knapp hasn't. It is clear why the graduate right-hander is one of the best in the business, and he is getting the necessary recognition on the team, conference, and national levels. The winner of the prestigous award will be announced on June 13th, just a week and a half away. The inception of this award was in 2009, and since then, no UNC baseball pitcher has won the award. Knapp has a chance to not only be recognized as the best, but he can make UNC history in the process.
