Tributes pour in for longtime Bahrain resident Manijeh Mistry
Former Bahrain resident and community stalwart Manijeh Mistry passed away in Pune following a cardiac failure. She was 72. Mistry, who relocated to India in 2022, had spent over two decades in Bahrain, serving as a lecturer at the University of Bahrain's College of Health Sciences. Beyond her academic contributions, she was a prominent figure in Bahrain's social scene, closely associated with the Indian Ladies Association, Migrant Workers Protection Society, Lions Club of Bahrain, Bahrain Zoroastrian Association, and several other community organisations. Known for her warmth, creativity, and leadership, Mistry held key roles within the Indian Ladies Association, including Treasurer and Youth Wing Head. She was also admired for her culinary skills, theatre performances, Rangoli art, and gardening. She is survived by her husband Percy Mistry, son Framarz, and daughter Friya. Community members in Bahrain and Pune have expressed deep sorrow at her passing, remembering her as a woman of compassion and spirited involvement.

PAAET requires medical exam for health majors
KUWAIT CITY, July 15: Acting Dean of Admissions and Registration at the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) Dr. Fawzi Al-Doukhi announced the adoption of new health requirements for admission to certain medical and health specializations for the 2025/2026 academic year. These new requirements were laid down after the identification of infectious disease cases that prevented graduates from being appointed to health agencies despite meeting the academic requirements. Al-Doukhi revealed that students accepted into the aforementioned specializations must submit a recent medical examination certificate, proving they are free of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and hepatitis B and C. He indicated that the new procedures apply to all programs in the College of Nursing, in addition to several courses in the College of Health Sciences, as follows: Respiratory Therapist, Anesthesia Technician, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Emergency Medical Technician. He confirmed that the basic admissions plan for the 2025/2026 academic year started as scheduled, and that applications this year will be limited to Kuwaiti students only, as per the directive of the Higher Admissions Committee. He disclosed that the application period will be from Aug 8-18, with a comprehensive media and advisory campaign in the admissions halls, official social media platforms and Kuwait TV. He added that a pavilion will be established at the Avenues Mall from Aug 2-7 to respond to the queries of students and parents. He said the new specializations being offered for the first time include Fire Engineering Technology in cooperation with the Kuwait Fire Force (KFF). He added that the program is for four years and the students will graduate directly as firefighting officers. Requirements for this specialization: Applicants must be male (only this year) A minimum GPA of 85 percent Must hold a recent certificate (issued within the last three years) Pass the interview and medical examination Meet the requirements of KFF Other majors offered last year include: Respiratory Therapist at the College of Health Sciences Energy Efficiency at the College of Technological Studies Applied Statistics, Marketing, Logistics Management, and Human Resources Management at the College of Business Studies Al-Doukhi pointed out that the increasing demand for medical majors reflects a growing awareness among students of the importance of these specializations and the labor market's need for them. He called on all Kuwaiti students to follow the authority's official platforms and benefit from the available support and guidance, emphasizing the authority's commitment to facilitating admission and achieving fairness in educational and employment opportunities. He revealed that this year's admissions plan includes several categories of Kuwaitis as follows: 1. New students (high school graduates who are not enrolled or employed) 2. Students on study leave from accredited official bodies 3. Employees with a 'no conflict' certificate (limited to institutes) 4. Employees wishing to combine work and study (providing a certificate proving the combination) Basic Admission Requirements: The student must not be enrolled in another university or academic institution. The high school diploma must be accredited or officially certified and equivalent. A proper academic sequence for the secondary stage must be present. For holders of Saudi certificates: A test of academic ability and achievement is required; otherwise, the certificate will not be valid. Applications are submitted via: - The authority's official website - The Sahel government application Some categories(students on study leave, combining work and study, and no conflict) are required to appear in person at the admissions halls. After the admission results are announced, the students will receive a message confirming their acceptance into a specific major and will be asked to approve or reject their acceptance electronically. The deadline for approval is Sept 6, 2025; after which admission will be automatically revoked for any student who has not approved the admission. Al-Doukhi pointed out the difference between the application percentage and the acceptance percentage, explaining that the application percentage is the minimum percentage allowed for admission, while the acceptance percentage is the lowest percentage accepted after the competition. In a significant step toward sustainability and scientific innovation, Dr. Rahaf Ajaj, Chair of the Department of Environmental and Public Health at Abu Dhabi University's (ADU) College of Health Sciences, has been awarded a German utility model patent for her pioneering research into biodegradable polymeric films. This achievement underscores ADU's commitment to driving impactful research with real-world applications that benefit both the environment and student by the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), the utility model titled "Composition of polymer films based on pectin containing a boswellic acid derivative for improved functionality' represents a breakthrough in active packaging materials. Developed in collaboration with an international team of scientists, the innovation combines pectin, a natural plant-based polymer, with a specially synthesized compound derived from boswellic acid, resulting in enhanced antioxidant activity and improved water new biodegradable film holds significant potential across several sectors. In the food industry, it has the potential to extend product shelf life by protecting against spoilage, while in healthcare, it introduces safer and more efficient drug delivery systems with wider biomedical applications. Sultan Bin Ahmed attends UoS graduation ceremony
Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), attended the graduation ceremony for students of the Colleges of Medicine and Health Sciences on Saturday. The event took place at University City Hall in Sharjah. The graduation ceremony commenced with the UAE national anthem, followed by recitation of verses from the Holy Quran. Dr Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the UoS, delivered a speech in which he expressed deep gratitude to Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed for his generous patronage and for honouring the event with his presence. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed also extended his congratulations to the graduates, celebrating the addition of a new group of qualified medical professionals to the healthcare field. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed presented graduation certificates to 453 students from the UoS's medical colleges. The graduates included 189 from the College of Medicine, 150 from the College of Pharmacy, 114 from the College of Dentistry, and 423 from the College of Health Sciences. He congratulated the graduates and offered prayers for their continued success in their professional journeys and careers. In his address at the graduation ceremony, Dr Agamy highlighted the UoS's notable achievements in the medical field, both academically and scientifically. He emphasised the university's vital role in advancing community health and healthcare education. Dr Agamy noted that under the vision and direction of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder of the University, the Integrated Healthcare Complex was established in 2004. Designed to reflect the real-world healthcare environment, the complex brings together the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Health Sciences, along with advanced research and training centres. He stressed that this is more than just an academic facility—it is a comprehensive learning ecosystem that promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and prepares a unified, skilled healthcare team capable of delivering holistic care across all levels and circumstances. The Chancellor of the UoS announced that since the establishment of the Integrated Healthcare Complex, the university has graduated over 4,500 doctors, dentists, and pharmacists. These graduates are now serving in healthcare systems across the UAE, the wider region, and around the world, contributing as skilled and qualified professionals in various medical fields. During the graduation ceremony, the graduates solemnly took the oath of medical and healthcare professionals in the presence of Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed, pledging to carry out their duties with dedication, integrity, and loyalty.
