Road America Victory Drives Caio Collet Into Title Hunt
INDYCAR Caio Collet thrust himself into contention for the 2025 INDY NXT by Firestone championship with a commanding win June 22 at Road America. That was Collet's first victory of the season and second of his career in the INDYCAR development series. HMD Motorsports driver Collet capitalized on a rare error by Andretti Global's Dennis Hauger, who had led the opening 15 laps from pole. Hauger slid wide in the final corner on the 4.014-mile track, allowing Collet to pounce and take the lead, one he never relinquished. 'For 14 laps, he didn't put a wheel wrong,' Collet said. 'At one point in Turn 14, he had a little slide. I got a run. In my mind, I thought, 'It's now or never.'' Collet topped both practice sessions during the weekend and converted his pace into a statement win, leading all five remaining laps after Hauger's mistake. The win capped Collet's third consecutive podium finish, building on a second-place result on the streets of Detroit on June 1 and a third at World Wide Technology Raceway, where he led a race-high 58 of 75 laps June 15. Despite losing out late in that race to rookie Lochie Hughes and second-year driver Myles Rowe, Collet found consistency at a critical stage in the championship, reaching the midway mark of the season. Entering WWTR, Collet trailed championship leader Hauger by 84, but his form has begun to shift momentum. He sits 70 points back heading into the next round Sunday, July 6 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the site of his first pole and victory last season. This moment could catapult him to preseason expectations. Collet, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, was a title favorite entering this season – with good reason. He was the top returning points scorer, placing third last year. And 2024 champion Louis Foster and runner-up Jacob Abel each graduated to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. However, early dominance by Andretti Global rookies Hauger and Hughes, who won the season's first six races, left Collet playing catch-up. A third-place finish behind Hauger and Hughes in the season opener at St. Petersburg was followed by a mechanical DNF at Barber Motorsports Park. 'To be honest, it was quite tough,' Collet said. 'When you come in a second year, you expect to be at the front. We were there, but not to their level.' Road America proved he has leveled the playing field. With four of the remaining seven races on natural road courses – where Collet has a strong record – and three ovals where he holds experience over the rookies, the championship picture has shifted. Even Hauger acknowledged the potential turning of the tide. 'We've been on the back foot compared to Collet all weekend (at Road America),' Hauger said. 'We did everything right, but they were just a bit stronger.' With momentum now on his side and tracks ahead that suit his style, Collet's resurgence sets up a thrilling second half of the season. 'Hopefully, we can gain the momentum throughout the rest of the season,' Collet said. 'For sure will be a long fight and a difficult one. Hopefully, we can win a couple more races, and we never know what can happen. I think our focus is to win races and see what happens.'

Caio Collet Breaks Through at Road America With First Win of Season
INDYCAR The wait finally is over for Caio Collet. Collet passed championship leader Dennis Hauger with less than five laps remaining and drove away to win the Grand Prix of Road America on Sunday, his first INDY NXT by Firestone victory this season. Collet's No. 76 HMD Motorsports car crossed the finish line 1.7093 seconds ahead of Hauger's No. 28 Nammo car fielded by Andretti Global. SEE: Race Results 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet entered this event with three podium finishes in the first six races this season, including two runner-up finishes. His victory was the first this season for HMD Motorsports, as Hauger and fellow Andretti Global rookie teammate Lochie Hughes have combined to win every race. 'At the beginning of the season, we couldn't match them, to be honest,' Collet said. 'It was really frustrating. Every time we went on track, it was hard to be second or third. But we kept working hard, and we need to keep working because they are a great team with great drivers. We need to keep pushing.' Hughes rounded out the podium finishers in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car after passing Josh Pierson in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine on the last of 20 laps around the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit. Pierson ended up tying his career-best finish of fourth. Myles Rowe placed fifth in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car in the caution-free race. Hauger led from the pole on an unseasonably hot day with air temperatures in the high 80s. Collet stayed close from the second starting position, keeping the gap around five- or six-tenths of a second as the duo marched away from the rest of the 19-car field. Collet's patience expired on Lap 16. He drove alongside Hauger on the long front straightway and made an outside pass in Turn 1 stick. Collet then eased away from Hauger over the last four laps. 'I kept up the pace, kept up the pressure,' Collet said. 'Yesterday, I think I lost the pole to myself. Dennis did a phenomenal lap, but I think I left a bit in the tank and was very frustrated. Today I really wanted to give the win to the team.' Said Hauger: 'I think we've been on the back foot compared to Collet all weekend. We did everything right today, but they were just a bit stronger. I tried to do what I could, but it just wasn't meant to be. Still a decent weekend.' Hauger's lead over second-place Hughes grew from 19 to 28 points with his fifth podium finish of the season. Collet is third, 70 points behind Hauger. The next race is the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, July 6 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It's good track for Collet, who earned his sole previous INDY NXT victory there in July 2024. recommended

Lochie Hughes Comes Alive Late To Win at WWTR
INDYCAR In a blistering race with no yellow flags, Lochie Hughes tossed caution in the breeze when it mattered most and ended up in victory lane. Hughes used a late charge to win the INDY NXT by Firestone race Sunday at World Wide Technology Raceway, his second win in his rookie season in the INDYCAR development series. Hughes, from Australia, drove his No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car to a 4.3521-second victory over Myles Rowe, who earned a career-best second place in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy machine. SEE: Race Results 'I was starting fifth, and I was pretty angry with yesterday (after qualifying),' Hughes said. 'So, I honestly didn't really care. I just thought I'd send it and try something with the setup and send it and see what happens.' Caio Collet finished third in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car after leading 58 of the first 61 laps in the 75-lap race, the first oval event this season. Salvador de Alba finished fourth in the No. 27 Grupo Indi car fielded by Andretti Global, just .0676 of a second behind Collet and the final podium position. Pole sitter and championship leader Dennis Hauger rounded out the top five in the No. 28 Nammo machine, the third Andretti Global car to finish in the top five. Hauger's lead over Hughes in the standings slimmed to 19 points after he carried a 38-point lead into this race weekend. Hughes made a stunning charge toward the front after deciding to try to use his higher-downforce setup to find speed on the higher line on the 1.25-mile oval. The risky ploy, as pieces of worn tire rubber can accumulate in the upper groove and reduce grip, began to pay off when Hughes passed the No. 14 HMD Motorsports car of Josh Pierson to climb from sixth to fifth on Lap 46. The boldest, most decisive moves by Hughes came in a four-lap span from Laps 59-62, when he blazed a trail on the high line to jump from fourth to first. Hughes was in second at the start of Lap 62 when he approached the leading car of Collet, who was running behind the No. 3 Frank's Red Hot car of Ricardo Escotto, who was on the tail end of the lead lap. Hughes swept past both cars on the outside of Turn 2 and powered away, never trailing thereafter. 'It was mega,' Hughes said of his car. 'I still can't really believe it, to be honest. I was so, so disappointed after yesterday. I thought we had thrown away a good result. We did it somehow. 'I just thought I'd try the high line one lap, and it worked. I was like, 'Oh, found something,' and then just kept running it and ended up with a win. It's awesome. I'm so happy.' Said Collet, who used a low-downforce setup for speed: 'I thought I had it with 50 to go, but once I caught traffic, I really lost the tires, and it was really hard to hang on. And they just came flying by.' Hughes averaged 157.199 mph in the caution-free race, the first without a yellow flag this season and the first oval race without a caution in the series since this event in 2022. There also were 165 on-track passes in this feverish race, an INDY NXT record at WWTR. The next INDY NXT by Firestone race is Sunday, June 22, the Grand Prix at Road America (11 a.m. ET, FS1, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). recommended
