Original Fantastic Four from 20 years ago with ‘perfect cast' is streaming as Marvel reboot hits screens
The Fantastic Four are finally returning to the big screen in the latest Marvel blockbuster, but don't miss out on this superhero nostalgia trip Marvel's earlier attempts at superhero blockbusters are currently streaming on Disney+ as yet another comic book reboot hits screens this week. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth attempt to bring the first superhero family to the big screen. Following Roger Corman's unreleased version from the 1990s and preceding the much-maligned 2015 reboot, two films starring the beloved superhero squad were released to relative success in 2005 and 2007. Both Fantastic Four and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, are available to stream on Disney+, and it's the perfect time for fans to remind themselves of the franchise's humble beginnings. Some would even argue that the cast of these noughties cult classics, including Ioan Gruffudd as Mister Fantastic, Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman, Chris Evans as Human Torch and Michael Chiklis as the Thing, is even better than the new ensemble. The two films also feature Julian McMahon, who sadly passed away this year, as the iconic nemesis of the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom. One Google reviewer defended the first film from lacklustre reviews: 'AMAZING I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. 'This movie is not only funny but has a very clear plot that establishes the characters (perfect casting for each role btw) compared to the new one this is absolutely perfect in every way. 'It has a good replay value and it's an overall fun movie. If you're thinking of watching the 2015 one DONT this one is actually a movie with some value to it.' Someone else raved: 'Amazing Movie, Many call it cheesy, personally I don't see that. I believe the casting is amazing, They look very close to the Comics.' The praise continued on Letterboxd with a nostalgic fan writing: 'This cast was so perfect it actually amazes me. 'Entirely nostalgic. It's so 2005 and I f***ing love it.' Another said: 'This is legitimately a perfect superhero film. There's so much heart in this and it's so fun, and campy, and charming. The casting is just impeccable.' And a final user posted: 'This is one of my comfort movies. The amount of times I watched it as a kid is unhealthy. It is like watching a comic book in motion. 'Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis are the peak of casting.' With Marvel's famous family returning to the big screen this week, don't forget to return to the Fantastic Four's roots to appreciate just how far they've come.

Review – Supergirl #3: Too Many Kryptonians
Supergirl #3 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: Comics are dark and gritty these days – not as much as in the 90s, but the stakes are high and the heroes are often forced to make compromises. That's why it's so great to have a book that's so unapologetically, wonderfully silly as Sophie Campbell's Supergirl. With Lesla Lar having invaded Midvale and taken over Supergirl's life, Kara is left to room with Lena Luthor – who is busy trying to win over Streaky. This is a great continuation of Lena's storyarc with her father in the main Superman title, as she tries to carve her own path and develops a deep friendship with Kara. Lesla, meanwhile, sees Supergirl winning over the residents of Midvale even as they don't think she's the genuine article and continues to become more and more unhinged – which leads to her using Black Kryptonite to poison Kara's body and mind, turning her into the nefarious…Satangirl! Impostor to the rescue. Via DC Comics. Kara's evil alter-ego – which is a little familiar given her time under the Red Lanterns and the Batman Who Laughs, who both corrupted her – proceeds to tear her way through Midvale, pulling off nasty pranks. But as she deteriorates mentally, her body starts breaking down as well, leading Lena to try to save the day. I've got to say, the role of Streaky and 'Tinytano' in this issue has got to be my favorite part. Please, give us all the Super-pets. But I really like just how nuanced Lesla is being written as the villain as well. She's clearly a girl who was denied something she needed and is taking it out on the wrong person – and the end of the issue makes very clear where the true problem lies. This issue is another great one, and it really does wonders for both Kara and her supporting cast. Next issue we're headed for Kandor, and I can't wait to see more of this bizarre candy-coated world. James Gunn Confirms Clark Kent Wears Hypnotic Glasses in New SUPERMAN Film — GeekTyrant
For as long as Superman has existed, there's been one nagging question fans love to poke at… how does no one realize Clark Kent is just Superman with glasses? It's been the subject of endless jokes, memes, and arguments, even among diehard fans. Well, James Gunn hears you, and he's leaning into a solution straight from the comics with hypno glasses. While chatting with ComicBook, Gunn addressed the classic identity issue and admitted it used to bother him, too… until comic writer Tom King reminded him that Superman's eyewear actually does have a super-powered explanation. Gunn said of the hypno glasses protecting Clark Kent's identity: 'That's canon in the comics. It's kind of been forgotten but that's from the comics. I was sitting with Tom King, the comic book writer, and I was like, 'you know the thing that I just don't really know how to reconcile in myself is the glasses because the glasses always bothered me as a kid.' They bothered me because I just don't have that much suspension of disbelief to believe that.' It turns out, the glasses alter perception. Gunn went on to explain that, yes, David Corenswet's Clark Kent will look and act differently than Superman, but the idea that the glasses help fool people is interesting, and Gunn went on to saying: 'You know, they're two different people even though I think out of all the actors that have played Superman, Corenswet looks the most different as Clark Kent to Superman, even more so than Chris Reeve. But he said, 'you know, there's an answer for that in the comics, it's canon that they hypnotize people.'' If you flip back to Superman Vol. 1 #330 (published in 1978), the comic explains that Superman uses "Super-Hypnosis" through his glasses to subtly manipulate how others perceive him as Clark Kent. It's weird, sure. but it works, and Gunn is embracing it. Superman is 'set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU." The cast of Superman also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, Skyler Gisondo as Clark's best pal, Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet's Perry White; Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl; Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl; and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. It also stars Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific; Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampan as Eve Teschmacher; Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorphosis; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent. The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.

Review – The Flash #22: Sins of the Fathers
The Flash #22 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: 'Bad Moon Rising' has been a compelling crossover so far, with Wally West combating Eclipso's takeover of the moon by splitting himself into hundreds of alternate selves – at the growing cost of his mental stability. But this issue throws a new wrinkle into things, as his kids start helping him – but not the same Wally. Jai winds up playing a key role in helping the Wally clone that resisted being reabsorbed last issue, seeing that his father is losing his mind and seeing this version as closer to the real thing. Iris, meanwhile, just wants to help – and when she joins her father in the fray, he's too busy splitting his attention to realize how far she's willing to go. This is all far more cosmic than Flash stories usually are, and Eclipso and his rogues are almost entirely off-panel for this issue. But this is one of the better stories the book has done in a while – and it completely wins me over with the surprise last-page cameo. The call. Via DC Comics. While this series has gone in some odd directions, it does feel like it's finding its groove again with a bigger focus on the Flash family. The characterization of Iris and Jai is feeling much more in line with the way Jeremy Adams wrote them, with both trying to help their father in their own way – but the tragedy of this might be that they're going to find themselves on opposite sides as a result. There are some interesting tie-ins coming up, and while this series hasn't gotten the hype of some of the other big books at DC right now, it does feel like it's finding its groove at the right time. Super-speed is one of those powers that can be really predictable – or really out there if you think about the bizarre ways it can affect someone. And the use of Barry Allen as an ex-speedster watching helplessly as his protege starts to slip away and become something new is a really good way to keep the character involved.
