Civil servant injured in group assault, 4 suspects nabbed
TAWAU: A civil servant sustained injuries after being assaulted by a group of men at a restaurant near Jalan St Patrick, in the Fajar town centre, early yesterday morning. In the 12.40am incident, the 30-year-old victim was attacked by more than 10 individuals while having drinks at the premises. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the victim claimed he was struck with a glass and saw an unknown individual brandishing a knife during the attack. "The victim, who works for a local government authority, said he was unaware of the reason for the assault and has since lodged a police report," he said in a statement. Following the report, police arrested four local men, aged between 17 and 29, in a series of separate operations yesterday. The first arrest, involving a 27-year-old man with four prior criminal records related to drugs and mischief, was made at 11.30am at Jambatan 3 Melati, Kampung Pukat, Tanjung Batu Laut. The second suspect, aged 29, was detained at the Takada Commercial Centre at 12.15pm, while the remaining two — a 17-year-old and a 26-year-old man — were arrested at 12.45pm. "One of the suspects has five previous convictions under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while the other two have no criminal record," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Saifuddin: 46,086 cybercrime cases probed last year
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 46,086 investigation papers were opened last year in connection with various cyber-related offences, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the cases were investigated under several key laws, including the Computer Crimes Act 1997, Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. "Of the total, the prosecution rate reached 49 per cent," he said in response to Chong Zhemin (PH–Kampar), who inquired about the number of reported cybercrime cases in 2024 and the measures taken by the ministry to enhance public digital security. Saifuddin added, "Although from the police's perspective, we feel the investigation papers are yielding results, the public's expectations are higher." Meanwhile, on the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), now operating under the direct leadership of the police, Saifuddin said the centre would operate 24/7. "Previously, there were complaints about the NSRC's limited operating hours, even though scams can happen at any time. Therefore, we will now operate around the clock, seven days a week. "Currently, we receive an average of 500 scam-related calls daily, and this trend is increasing — so we must respond accordingly." He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had agreed for the Public Service Department to consider approving 139 new positions to strengthen the NSRC. The NSRC is a joint initiative between the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the police, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, financial institutions, and the telecommunications industry.

Online gaming, prostitution suspects nabbed

District Police Chief, ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said, a 24-year-old local man was detained at about 2.30pm on Thursday at Lorong Lahad Datu Square 1 by the Crime Investigation Division on suspicion of conducting online gambling activities. Advertisement 'The team also seized a smartphone that contains a gambling application. 'This case would be investigated under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. which provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 and a jail term of up to five years, on conviction,' he said. According to Dzulbaharin, at 10.30pm on the same day, police arrested a 21-year-old woman offering sexual services via MiChat application. He said, the suspect was detained following Op Noda conducted by the Crime Investigation Division on a hotel at Lahad Datu town. 'The suspect was believed to provide sexual service with payment between RM250 to RM350. The team also seized some condoms and cash during the operation. 'The case would be investigated under Section 372 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction,' said Dzulbaharin in a statement on Friday. He said the Lahad Datu Police Headquarters take serious views on all forms of crime that can threaten the well-being of the community, especially social crimes involving baby dumping, prostitution and gambling. Baby boy found abandoned in front of house in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: A baby boy was found abandoned in front of a house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali, in the early hours of Friday. District police chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the baby was discovered alive at about 3.06am and has since been taken to Lahad Datu Hospital for treatment, where he remains in stable condition. In a separate case, police arrested a 24-year-old local man on Thursday afternoon at Lorong Lahad Datu Square 1 for allegedly operating online gambling activities. A smartphone containing a gambling application was also seized, and the case is being investigated under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
