Police respond to multiple incidents during Canada Day across Waterloo Region
Victoria Park in Kitchener, Ont., is seen in this file photo from September 2010. Police say they responded to a high volume of calls during Canada Day celebrations across Waterloo Region. Between 4:30 p.m. on July 1 and midnight, Waterloo Regional Police say officers were dispatched to incidents in Victoria Park and throughout downtown Kitchener. Officials say they responded to disturbances, noise complaints, fireworks violations, mischief, and public intoxication, as hundreds gathered in public spaces to celebrate the holiday. Victoria Park was closed around 10 p.m. to help disperse large crowds. Police say fireworks were seized from multiple youths, and a 17-year-old was arrested for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Several trespassing charges were laid under the Trespass to Property Act, and investigations into other incidents remain ongoing. Officers from multiple units, including the Public Order Unit and Community and Youth Engagement Unit, were deployed to assist with crowd and safety management.

On this occasion, His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, stated: 'At the start of 2025, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declared the year as the 'Year of Community'. This inspired us at the Corporation to intensify our efforts and launch meaningful high-impact community initiatives. The ceremony of honoring the award-wining institutions took place in the historical St. Paul cathedral at the British capital London, and the award was received by Hend Ahmad Shaker, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communication in PCFC. Among the Corporation's most notable social initiatives in 2025 were programmes in education and vocational training, sustainable environmental campaigns, charitable projects supporting self-sufficiency, and community-based projects focusing on families, children, food security, as well as expansive health and awareness campaigns conducted in partnership with health and charitable organisations across the UAE.

North Al Batinah launches second phase of Summer Centres activities
Muscat: As part of the 2025 Summer Centers activities, the second phase of the "Social Development in North Al Batinah Governorate" participation was launched. The second phase of the General Directorate of Social Development in North Al Batinah Governorate's participation in the 2025 Summer Centers activities was launched this morning. The participation, supervised by the Office of His Excellency the Governor of North Al Batinah, is a continuation of community efforts to harness the energies of children and youth during the summer vacation, through specialised activities implemented by civil society organisations in various wilayats of the governorate. Omani Women's Associations participated, along with charitable groups, civil society organisations, and Al Wafa Centers for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities. Sultan bin Qais bin Saif Al Abri, Director General of the General Directorate of Social Development in North Al Batinah Governorate, explained that "this participation comes within the framework of effective partnerships between various community institutions to provide an educational and recreational environment for our students during the summer, contributing to building their personalities and developing their capabilities in various fields." The participation of the Omani Women's Associations included a variety of programs and workshops. These include traditional industrial workshops and palm frond workshops, in addition to scientific programs, creative thinking workshops, and a number of health workshops, along with various volunteer initiatives. As for the Al Wafa Centers for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, their activities varied across several governorates in North Al Batinah, focusing on a number of artistic industries, including gypsum and accessories, and candle mold making. As part of the participation of charitable groups and civil society organizations, the Liwa Charity Harvest Team organized several interactive workshops, including the "Protect Yourself" workshop and the "Skillful Speaker" workshop, in addition to awareness programs titled "Your Awareness Saves Lives" and the importance of cybersecurity. These participations affirm the importance of activating institutional community work and integrating efforts between government agencies and civil society organizations, contributing to enhancing the capabilities of children and adolescents and honing their skills in a safe and stimulating environment.

Men arrested in Greystones after home burglary interrupted by gardaí
Two men were arrested in Greystones after gardaí were called to the scene of a burglary at a home in the Wicklow town on Thursday afternoon. Gardaí from the Wicklow North Community Engagement area arrested the men in their 40s under Operation Thor, which was initially set up to tackle rural burglaries across the country. The arrests were made at around 2:30pm after gardaí responded to a report of an incident at a home. When they arrived at the property they conducted a search and discovered the men attempting to flee the scene. READ MORE They were found to be in possession of a bag with items that were identified as belonging to the homeowners. The items were subsequently returned to the owners. The two men were brought to Bray Garda station where they were being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations are ongoing.

It takes a village: Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Week to highlight childhood, community and connection
Abu Dhabi, UAE – Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) and its partners will host the 2nd Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Week 2025, an Emirate-wide series of community activations, taking place from 17 - 23 November 2025. Under the theme Together We Can Make Abu Dhabi a Family-friendly Emirate, the week will serve as a platform for public and private sector partners to co-create and offer enriching experiences for families and young children. The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Week 2025 embodies ECA's vision where every young child can flourish, to their full potential, in a safe and family-friendly environment. The week creates space for collaboration, shared action, and joyful connection, while aligning with the UAE's Year of Community by encouraging everyone to take part. The 2024 edition saw a remarkable response: over 25,000 families participated, more than 70 activations were hosted across the Emirate, and 1,000+ global attendees contributed to a vibrant exchange of ideas, innovation, and storytelling. Building on this momentum, the 2025 edition aims to deepen impact, broaden reach, and inspire even more engagement. While the 2024 edition included a global forum, a gathering of early childhood researchers and an Early Childhood Development Fair (biannual activities), the 2025 edition aims to create targeted impact on the grassroots level by engaging the community, through activations, across the Emirate. 'In the first 1,000 days, a child's brain forms over a million connections every second - these are the moments that shape a lifetime. We also know that investing in the early years is an investment in our nation's future.
