TV star Catriona Rowntree shares her travels do's and don'ts

Catriona Rowntree has hosted Getaway for more than 30 years – so if anyone is authorised to talk on the topic of jet lag (and travel dos and don'ts), it's her. The beloved TV presenter of the much-loved Aussie travel show has been to almost every corner of the world, assuring that the Catriona you see on TV truly is travel-obsessed. 'Let me assure you that what you see on TV is authentic – I absolutely love travel just as much as I love to shop,' she laughed, during a candid interview with The 54-year-old, who has been gallivanting around Paris and will soon take on the sights of Tahiti for the show, revealed the three things everyone should do to help minimise jet lag. 'The moment you book a flight, grab your phone and put two things in, 'world clock' and adjust your body to the location of where you are going,' she advised in her role as Compare the Market's travel expert. She sometimes takes an over-the-counter sleeping tablet like Ashwagandha (from Nature's Way) and sleeps on the flight, depending on where she's going. She also avoids drinking alcohol on flights. 'The moment you land, walk it out, don't run, don't go to the gym, don't over-exert the body,' she said. 'You want to walk and get as much vitamin D as you can. Vitamin D is the key.' You'll rarely catch the seasoned presenter wearing dark-coloured clothes while exploring the streets – mainly during summer. 'Wear white and or cream so you have a natural reflection on the skin.' She also said it's important to stay awake until around 9pm and above all, 'do not have an afternoon nap'. To help prepare her body before any travel she stocks up on the vitamins at least two weeks before her trip. 'This is because you generally will catch the cold in the first week of your holiday when your defences drop,' she said. 'I've never had Covid. I'm as healthy as a clam and I travel more than anyone. So trust me on the vitamins.' When asked what her big travel no-no is, especially when gallivanting around Europe, she said to avoid 'clam suitcases'. In fact, she shared a clip about it on Instagram that went viral. She titled the reel 'dumb things I've done in Paris' showing her suitcase barely fitting in a lift and having to send it down on its own as she couldn't fit beside it. 'Learn from my mistakes,' she joked. She shared another snap of her 'clam suitcase' in the boot of a car, showcasing that in small spaces it was impossible to open. 'You just need one of those surfer suitcases that open from the top because those 'clam suitcases' do not work.' Meanwhile, she advised to take a small, everyday bag for when you're sightseeing during the day. 'You don't want something too big throughout the day when you're travelling, you just want something cross body that's easy.' She's collaborated with Blue Illusion, an Australian-owned, French-inspired brand, to design her own crossbody strap bag, aplty titled the 'Catriona Crossbody Bag'. 'I've never actually had a problem with pickpockets but I did design this bag so it has a magnetised fall-over top.' She said it's the perfect everyday travel bag that easily fits your phone and has enough pockets to securely store things like passports. The self-confessed overpacker said it's best to pack light, avoid expensive suitcases and if you can, stop off at a surf shop and try and get a suitcase that opens from the top. The avid traveller said the one thing she loves the most about her job is the 'constant learning'. 'I just adore meeting people, learning from them, and living every day as though it's my last,' she told 'Every day is hectic and tiring and I love it. We are so fortunate to have the good health to be able to travel. '[Just] go for it. Book a trip. Don't put things off because none of us know what each day will bring. That's certainly a lesson I've learned the hard way. 'My dad always said to my mum, 'when I retire, we'll do this'. And unfortunately, he passed away from cancer way too young. And so now I try to spoil my mum with those trips, but I really learned that lesson the hard way.' Catriona said her bucket list is fluid, ever-changing and always extensive but the three things high on her list are The Galapagos Island, Antarctica and swimming with the whale sharks in Ningaloo.

These are the most common holiday scams you need to look out for - and how much money you could LOSE

With the summer holidays in full swing and millions of Brits preparing to head away, there's certain scams tourists keep on falling for. From being overcharged in taxis to making bookings on websites that aren't legit, travellers overseas are often swindled out of money during their trips. Research conducted by Compare the Market has identified the top tricks to look out for, and calculated how much money is at risk. The number one scam that keeps catching holidaymakers is overpriced taxi rides. Almost a third (32 per cent) of travellers fall victim to being charged too much for a lift abroad. Nearly £17 is lost per journey, on average, and it is recommended to book in advance, – through a hotel if possible – to avoid paying the top rate. Another money-draining scam to look out for is street sellers attempting to entice tourists into purchasing fake or inflated products, which places second. This can involve the trader insinuating the item is 'free' but once the tourist accepts it, demands money. Another example is selling products that claim to be real leather or silk, and not being legitimate. Some 20 per cent of holiday-goers surveyed by Compare The Market admitted to falling for the trick, with an average of £17.39 lost each time. The third most common issue is restaurants overcharging and inflating the final bill for a meal. A fifth (18 per cent) of Brits surveyed say they have experienced this and 25% of those hit with an overpriced meal contested it and paid less, However, 54 per cent ended up paying the full amount, and on average lost more £22.58 the last time it happened. Another problem people have faced is fake booking websites swindling tourists out of cash and pretending to be real companies. One in 10 (12 per cent) of holidaymakers have fallen victim to this trick, and have lost an average of £113.30. Phishing scams also cause issues for travellers, ranking fifth, and 11 per cent of those surveyed admitted to clicking on a hoax email before their trip. It can involve a scammer pretending to be a hotel and requesting money from the recipient. The common trick has cost tourists £75 on average. While the sixth most common scam is money exchange tricks, which can happen when a tourist uses an unofficial money exchange service. They can be hit with poor rates, short-changed from a vendor or have their card skimmed by an ATM. One in ten of those surveyed admitted to falling victim to this, losing £28 on average. Travel insurance expert Guy Anker urged holiday-goers to 'remain vigilant' during their travels. He said: 'With nearly one in three (30 per cent) Brits noting an uptick in the number of potential scams they're coming across when travelling abroad, it's more important than ever that holidaymakers remain vigilant to protect themselves against any potential losses. 'The traditional holiday scams are still coming up time and time again, be that overpaying for a taxi or paying inflated prices to street sellers in tourist hot spots. 'The average amounts lost on these are generally smaller, while the amounts lost to phishing attempts and fake booking websites – though less common – are much larger, with some unlucky travellers claiming to have lost thousands. 'There are ways you can protect yourself against travel-related purchases such as paying on a credit card if you can, as it may offer additional protection if something goes wrong with a purchase. 'Travel insurance won't typically cover online fraud, but it is still highly important as it could cover a multitude of other issues.'

Get set for a totally WICKET summer: The Hundred is rolling into cities across the UK - this is how YOU and your family can join the fun

The Hundred will soon be in cities across the UK - and it's going to be this summer's ultimate family day out! Cricket's most exciting tournament is famous for delivering edge-of-your seat sporting action paired with blockbuster entertainment in the stands. And thanks to its Principal Partner, Compare the Market, you can expect more fun (and fur) at every fixture, with live music, DJs, pyros, giveaways and lots more. It's cricket - made simples. Below, we tell you everything you need to know about The Hundred, from the format of the tournament to the amazing entertainment on offer at every fixture - and how your family can join in the fun! What is The Hundred? The Hundred involves eight teams featuring some of cricket's biggest stars that go head-to-head over five weeks this August. The idea is simple - each side gets 100 balls each, and the one who hits the most runs is declared the winner. This means every ball counts, so expect high stakes, edge-of-your-seat action right from the get go! As a new format, there are some new rules, like a 25-ball powerplay - when only two fielders are allowed out of the 30-yard circle around the stumps. This should make it easier for batters to smash boundaries, including fours and sixes! The result is a game of cricket more exhilarating and unmissable than ever. And because each side comes from one of seven cities - Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Southampton - there's the added excitement of getting behind your local team and cheering them towards the final at Lord's on 31 August. Every team has their own men's and women's squad, with the competitions running alongside each other. What makes it so special The fast-paced nature of The Hundred makes it absolutely thrilling to watch. But that's not the only reason it's the ideal day out for kids (and adults!) of all ages. It's everything that happens off the pitch too... Compare the Market is on hand to make the experience more entertaining - aided by everyone's favourite meerkats, Aleksandr and Sergei and Carl the Wombat. Expect merch, such as Compare the Market foam paws - perfect for waving in the air to cheer on your chosen side - and t-shirts fired from the t-shirt cannon! You could even appear on the big screen by scanning a QR code for the ever popular Meerkat Crowd Cam... Taking part in The Hundred is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. And to help you build up for match day, Compare the Market have teamed up with The Hundred to create a brand new, free interactive activity pack! Electric car move that could save Aussies $1,500 as 'one big snag' revealed

Got a new set of wheels on your mind? Well, you're not alone. Over a third of Australians (38.1 per cent) plan to make a new car purchase in the next three years, according to new research from Compare the Market. The majority (56.5 per cent) are looking to buy a petrol or diesel car. But motorists willing to try a hybrid or EV may be able save close to a grand or more each year by avoiding the petrol pump and taking advantage of green loan offers. RELATED Electric vehicle warning as BYD records biggest month of sales in Australia Common neighbour problem plaguing Aussie houses Major inflation change following RBA's shock interest rate decision Compare the Market publishes its Australian Car Ownership Index each year to help motorists understand the cost of purchasing and keeping a car on the road by analysing three popular car models. This year's research shows motorists could save almost $1,000 by choosing a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid over a petrol-only Mitsubishi Outlander. Australians who opt for the full electric BYD Sealion 7 could save nearly $1,500 per year when charged at home on the average single tariff electricity plan. These are big, long-term cost-of-living wins if you are looking for a new car, and these are just fuel cost savings. Some car loan lenders offer discounted interest rates for certain hybrid and electric vehicles. The savings on interest achieved through a better rate could add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars over time. With nearly a third of motorists (28.1 per cent) planning to purchase their next car through a car loan, this could be an important consideration. ICE vs HEV vs BEV ownership cost comparison Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed AWD (ICE) Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser 2WD (HEV) BYD Sealion 7 Premium (BEV) Purchase price (upfront) $57,050 drive-away $55,088 drive-away $56,780 drive-away Car loan repayment (five-year term) $13,147 $12,379 $12,722 Annual servicing (average of first five visits) $340.00 $270.00 $351.40 Fuel/charging $2,247.75 $1,304.25 $778.08 Comprehensive car insurance (average) $1,827.10 $1,978.27 $1,840.25 Registration and CTP (QLD) $708.35 $708.35 $646.70 Total cost per year $18,270.40 $16,640.07 $16,338.83 Owning a car can be expensive, but choosing a more fuel-efficient hybrid or full electric model can help to significantly reduce some costs. With new brands delivering greater choice and supply of hybrids, I think more motorists will be looking to green vehicles as a cost-effective next-car option. Not only do EV owners save on petrol, they may also be eligible to take advantage of green loan offers from banks that can help reduce repayments and save on interest. Regular loan rates and green loan interest rates could vary as much as 2.5 per cent. If you're looking at a novated lease, eligible employees and business owners can take advantage of the government's fringe benefits tax exemption for select electric cars – which could mean saving hundreds in your back pocket. But there's one big snag all owners do need to look out for, and that's insurance. We found a difference of thousands of dollars between premiums for all three car models. Be sure to always shop around for a better deal — whether it's for fuel, electricity or car insurance. Don't park yourself into higher prices. Hollywood's next biggest legends revealed – from Margot Robbie to Zendaya

TOM Holland, Margot Robbie and Zendaya are on the way to the top of the Hollywood hot spot - according to Brits. Barbie star Margot and her fellow actors are set to become the next huge Hollywood legends - movie goers have predicted. 8 8 8 8 Oppenheimer actress Florence Pugh and Willy Wonka star Timothee Chalamet came in fourth and fifth place respectively. Elvis Presley biopic star Austin Butler featured high in the list, followed by Sydney Sweeney and former Queen's Gambit star Anya-Taylor Joy. The research was commissioned by Compare the Market in a poll of 2,000 adults, which also revealed 51 per cent of Brits think the UK deserves an iconic film landmark - like the 'Hollywood' sign in LA. The price comparison app created a huge replica of the world-famous sign - in Hollywood, Worcestershire. A spokesperson said: "For ten years, we've been helping the nation beat the midweek slump and make saving simples with 2-for-1 cinema tickets on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. 'And what better way to celebrate than by bringing a little slice of Hollywood to the UK's own Hollywood? 'The public's response, and even the message from Hollywood itself, shows how much people still love the magic of the movies.' Cinema nostalgia is on the rise with 51 per cent of 25-34 year olds saying recent cult movie sequels have been a hit. Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, added: 'It's not every day you see the Hollywood sign pop up halfway across the world - let alone in another place called Hollywood. 'We're thrilled to see our iconic sign reimagined in Worcestershire and proud to share a little piece of Hollywood with our friends in the UK.' Down-to-earth actress Margot recently admitted she loves traipsing round London looking for ghouls. The Aussie, 34, revealed she gets spooked at The London Dungeon — but is too old for her former nightclub haunts. Margot, who was at Glastonbury last month with husband Tom Ackerley, revealed she no longer goes to her favourite London club Infernos in Clapham, where she used to live. She said at the Pilton Palais cinema: 'I'm 34 and I don't think they'd let me in. "They would be like, 'No go away old lady'. "Our roommate has a 99-year ban.' 8 8 8
