Indian Cricket Teams Chat With Idris Elba At King Charles' Home, Video Goes Viral
Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah met English actor Idris Elba and King Charles III in London, discussing cricket. India's Test captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant, besides ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, were on Tuesday seen interacting with English actor and kickboxer Idris Elba, who had a heart-to-heart chat with the Indian cricketers, who had travelled to King Charles' London home for a meet and greet. The 76-year-old British Monarch spent a considerable time discussing cricket with Indian cricketers, a meeting that Gill termed as 'amazing" during his chat with the media. Gill spoke about the tremendous support that his side always gets from the Indian diaspora whenever it plays in the United Kingdom. 'I saw you guys in the garden and I was like Yo! It's a real pleasure meeting you. Yes, please," Elba said in his customary style while interacting with Gill and his team. Watch the video here: 'Hi, nice to meet you. How are you doing?" Elba interacted with Harmanpreet Kaur and her team as well. Meanwhile, King Charles III felt Mohammed Siraj's dismissal was an 'unfortunate one" and could not help but ask Gill about it as he welcomed India's men's and women's cricket teams in the gardens of Clarence House in London. Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Deputy High Commissioner Sujit Ghosh, along with Congress Rajya Sabha MP and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla and secretary Devajit Saikia, were present as well. 'It was amazing. I think he (King Charles) is very kind and generous… we had some really good conversations," Gill said after the meet and greet. On Monday, India lost a close Test by 22 runs with the last batter, Siraj, getting bowled off England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir's ball. The delivery trickled back to clip the bails after Siraj played a defensive stroke. 'He (The King) did tell us that the way our last batter got out was quite unfortunate, the ball rolling onto the stumps. And he was just asking us, 'How did you feel after that?' And we told him it was an unfortunate match for us… but hopefully, we'll have better luck in both the next games," Gill said. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 10:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Quite unfortunate': King Charles III to Shubman Gill on Mohammed Siraj's dismissal in Lord's Test
The Indian men's and women's cricket teams were hosted by United Kingdom's King Charles III in the gardens of Clarence House on Tuesday. Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Deputy High Commissioner Sujit Ghosh along with Congress Rajya Sabha MP and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla and secretary Devajit Saikia were also present. The players said later that the King asked about their respective sporting assignments. The women's team led by Harmanpreet Kaur recorded their first-ever T20I series win in England, beating the hosts 3-2 in five matches, and are set to embark on a five-match ODI series. The men's team led by Shubman Gill are currently locked in a thrilling five-match Test series in England, which they trail 2-1 after an epic third Test at Lord's ended on Monday. The special cricket event was hosted by the British Asian Trust, a charity founded by King Charles III to tackle poverty, inequality and injustice in South Asia. 'It was amazing. I think he (King Charles) is very kind and generous… we had some really good conversations,' Gill is quoted as saying by PTI after the audience. Gill said that the King spoke about the freakish manner in which Mohammed Siraj was dismissed on Day 5 of the Lord's Test, with the ball dribbling back to the stumps despite coming off almost the middle of the bat. The wicket ended India's resistance, with their last three wickets batting out more than 50 overs and bringing them within 22 runs of victory. 'He (The King) did tell us that the way our last batsman got out was quite unfortunate, the ball rolling on to the stumps. And he was just asking us, 'how did you feel after that?' And we told him it was an unfortunate match for us… but hopefully, we'll have better luck in both the next games,' said Gill. Harmanpreet said that it was nice to experience this for the first time. 'It was a really nice experience. We have come to England so many times but this was the first opportunity to meet the King. He was very friendly and asked us about how our travel here was,' said Kaur. 'It's been a very humbling experience, coming here to the Royal House and meeting the King. It was the first time. We came all the way from Southampton but it was really worth it. And the girls were really excited about the visit and we are pleased that we are here,' said women's team Head Coach Amol Muzumdar.

Cong. demands judicial probe into Haryana recruitment of assistant professors by HPSC
Alleging large-scale irregularities in the recruitment process for assistant professors in various subjects in Haryana, Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Surjewala on Sunday demanded that the exams be conducted again in a transparent manner and judicial probe initiated into the matter. A delegation of candidates also submitted a memorandum to former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at his Delhi residence in this connection. Haryana Chief Minister's media secretary Praveen Attrey denied the allegations as 'baseless', saying that Mr. Surjewala had made similar accusations over half-a-dozen times since the BJP first came to power in 2014 and was 'frustrated' over the people voting the party to power for the third time in a row. Mr. Surjewala, at a press conference in Hisar, alleged irregularities in the exam for the recruitment of assistant professors (Geography) saying that 32 questions for the exam conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) were taken from the question paper for geography conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission. The HPSC had advertised 2,424 posts for assistant professors in 26 subjects in August last year and around 1.5 lakh candidates had applied for it. The posts were advertised after a gap of around five years. 'Seals broken' Mr. Surjewala said seals of envelopes carrying question papers for assistant professor (Hindi) exam were found broken at six centres and the HPSC had to cancel the exam two days later. The HPSC initially maintained that the process was not compromised, but later cancelled the exam, which was the 'biggest proof of scam', alleged Mr. Surjewala. Addressing the delegation of the candidates appearing for the Assistant Professor exam, Mr. Hooda said that 'paper leaks, copy-paste exams and scams have become synonymous with the recruitments conducted under the BJP government'.

Zohran Mamdani's NYC mayoral win draws sharp political reactions in India
Zohran Kwame Mamdani's victory in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor has evoked sharp reactions in India. In a post on X, Congress Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Singhvi said: 'When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan's PR team takes the day off. India doesn't need enemies with 'allies' like him shouting fiction from New York.' Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member Kangana Ranaut also reacted on X, appending a video clip of Mamdani participating in a protest against the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on 'the ruins of Babri Masjid', and insinuated that he is anti-Hindu. 'He sounds more Pakistani than Indian,' she said. In the past, Mamdani has criticised the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. More recently, he said he would not share a stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drawing a parallel between Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A senior Sangh Parivar leader, who handles diaspora outreach, described Mamdani as having close ties with the Pakistani diaspora in the US and as someone known to take anti-India positions. During Mamdani's election campaign, the India Impact Fund—an organisation that promotes the participation of South Asian Americans in US politics—supported him. Other groups, such as 'Indian Americans for Cuomo' (supporting his rival Andrew Cuomo) and the 'American Hindu Coalition', opposed him.

She married Mehmood Mamdani (Gujarati origin), a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran,' she wrote. The BJP MP claimed that the mayoral candidate was 'ready to wipe out Hinduism'. 'He sounds more Pakistani than Indian... whatever happened to his Hindu identity or bloodline and now he is ready to wipe out Hinduism, wow!!,' Kangana Ranaut said. 'It's the same story everywhere. On a different note, met Mira ji on a couple of occasions--congratulations to the parents. #ZohranMamdani,' she added. Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Thursday also echoed his political rival's sentiment, saying that Zohran Mamdani was acting as 'Pakistan's PR team'. 'When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan's PR team takes the day off. India doesn't need enemies with 'allies' like him shouting fiction from New York,' the Congress Rajya Sabha MP said in a post on X.
