Building up for a big campaign in the Ardal Leagues

With new boss Neill Hughes now in charge at The Ring with Russ Williams and Liam Simon part of his back-room team, Llay have been boosted by the news that highly-rated striker Jon Collo will be staying on for next season's North West League campaign. Collo struck 12 goals and set up two as Llay struggled in the bottom two for most of the season. Hughes, who has also been boosted by captain Max Peate and vice-captain Dean Bryan re-signing, posted on Llay's X site: 'This is the one for me. Can't wait to work with Collo.' Llay, promoted via the play-offs 15 months ago, will be one of the favourites to go up along with Bangor 1876, who were also relegated last April. North East Wales League champions Mynydd Isa step up a division where they will go up against Flintshire rivals, Connah's Quay Town, who also have a new man at the helm with Gary McConnell taking over from Gavin Parry. Prestatyn Town and Porthmadog should be involved in the promotion picture while Anglesey outfit, Trearddur Bay, will also be up there challenging. Corwen have switched leagues hoping what happened to Brickfield Rangers last season repeats itself. Rangers moved across from the North West to the North East and won the title, pipping Bow Street, Dolgellau and Llanuwchllyn to the title. Those three will be challengers, while Cefn Albion, Penycae, Rhos Aelwyd and Llangollen Town will all be battling for a top-six finish. Lex XI have been promoted as North East Wales League runners-up and it will be interesting to see how Ricky Evans' side fare at a higher level. And there's a tasty away day to begin life for Lex, who will pay a visit to Cefn Albion on Tuesday, July 29. On the same evening, Llangollen Town begin their tilt with a big derby clash at home to Corwen, while Penycae make the trip to Llanfair United. Rhos Aelwyd have a testing home encounter versus Llanuwchllyn to contend with. Other fixtures: Bow Street v Knighton; Builth Wells v Kerry; Llandrindod Wells v Radnor Valley; Llanrhaeadr YM v Dolgellau. Mynydd Isa open their Ardal North West League season away to Prestatyn Town, who were relegated from Cymru North last time out. There are home comforts in store for Connah's Quay Town and Llay Welfare, who will tackle Llannefydd and NFA respectively. Bangor 1876 begin at home to Llanrwst United. Other fixtures: Llangefni Town v Pwllheli; Porthmadog v Penmaenmawr Phoenix; St Asaph City v Bethesda Athletic. July 30: Trearddur Bay v Y Felinheli.

Flint bolster their ranks with the acquisition of Faux

Faux, who has also played locally for Cefn Druids and Connah's Quay Nomads, is team boss Lee Fowler's third signing of the summer and he spent last season at Caernarfon Town. The 28-year-old tricky wide player started out with Bolton Wanderers U23s and he first entered the Welsh system in the summer of 2019. Fowler told the club's website: 'Joe is a player I've chased for a couple of years, same as Jack Thorn really. 'He has been hampered with injury in the last couple of seasons and then finding others doing well in his role, so he has had a bit of a stop-start time of it, and has stagnated a bit. 'So, hopefully, this is a fresh start for him. When he's come up against us in the past, he has always been bright and lively, and given us problems. 'I'm not sure if it's because he has done really well or that our full backs have been awful, we'll soon find out!! 'Seriously, he will add quality on the pitch and also off it with his personality, and I'm sure he will be a real popular figure in and around the club.' Mold Alex opened their series of pre-season friendlies with a 1-0 triumph versus Prestatyn Town. A first half strike from Aidan Farren sealed the win for Barry Owen's side, who are back in action this evening at home to St Asaph City. In further friendly action this evening, FC Queens Park play host to Rhos Aelwyd, while Rhostyllen make the trip to Prestatyn Town. Llangollen Town are on tour to the Republic of Ireland as they begin their pre-season programme tomorrow. They are off to Bray to take on Boghall Rovers. Holywell Town will open their preparations for the new Cymru North season when they welcome Llangefni Town tomorrow. Tomorrow's other friendlies: Caersws v Penycae; Connah's Quay Tn v Broughton Utd; Rhuddlan Tn v Greenfield.

Peripheral Views: Marsden's Artist In Residence Exhibition Opens At Te Auaha

After six inspiring weeks at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, award-winning artist Connah Podmore concludes her time as the 2025 Artist in Residence with a collaborative exhibition, Peripheral Views, at Te Auaha from 19 – 29 June. Established in 1999, Marsden's Artist in Residence programme invites professional artists to work closely with students, building on a legacy of artistic excellence and creative exchange. This year, Connah Podmore – whose poetic drawing practice explores the depth found in everyday moments – shared her distinctive approach to composition, mark-making and process with Marsden's Visual Art students. Throughout the residency, students were encouraged to look beyond the obvious, to engage with subtle shifts of light and shadow, and to work in reverse – removing rather than adding – to build their images. Students learned to see the familiar with new eyes. 'I enjoyed learning about Connah's story and hearing the meaning behind her work,' said Olive, Year 10. 'I found shading the black canvas with a malleable rubber challenging, but I learnt how to use charcoal to create light, shadow, and monochrome depth.' Pina, Year 10 added, 'It was fascinating that instead of working from light to dark, we worked from dark to light. I learned to play with light and shadows, and to find ways to add interest to my work.' 'I loved creating a charcoal piece with Connah,' said Maddie, also in Year 10. 'Working with charcoal was a new concept to me. We took photos of shadows and recreated them using malleable rubbers to bring out the light. Connah was so inspiring and talented.' Sudhiksha in Year 10 reflected, 'It was really fun to turn a blank sheet of paper into art using only charcoal and a malleable eraser. I enjoyed going out to take photos and exploring lighting in interesting ways – turning those photos into artwork was really cool.' Kathryn Cotter, Head of Visual Art at Marsden, said the experience had a powerful impact on students: 'Connah brings a new way of viewing and interpreting familiar environments, which has really resonated with our students. Her thoughtful and experimental approach encouraged them to slow down, to observe more carefully, and to find creative depth in what they might otherwise overlook. We were incredibly privileged to have an artist of Connah's calibre in residence – her generosity in sharing her practice and process made this a truly inspiring and transformative opportunity.' The residency extended beyond Marsden, with Connah also leading a creative workshop for local primary school students on 9 May. Titled A Window on the World, the session encouraged young artists to explore texture and layering using found objects, foliage, talcum powder and water to create expressive prints. Each student selected a favourite to frame within a custom paper 'window,' giving their work a sense of perspective and place. They then had fun cutting up and collaging their remaining monoprints to create wonderful new compositions. It was a fun, hands-on introduction to creative thinking and visual storytelling. The upcoming exhibition, Peripheral Views, invites audiences to meditate on the gentle details often glanced over and discover layers of complexity in the seemingly simple. Drawing on the dispersion of light, the fleeting nature of vision, and the subtle distance between observer and object, Connah and students of Marsden present work that explores a shifting from subject to sensation. Exhibition details: Te Auaha Gallery, 65 Dixon Street, Wellington 19–29 June Monday–Friday 8.30am–6.00pm | Weekends 10.00am–3.00pm Artworks are available for purchase Marsden is proud to support and nurture creative potential through its Artist in Residence programme. Connah's time at Marsden has been both inspirational and enriching for students, staff, and the wider school community.
