Love wants Fermanagh to 'follow along' Down's path
Fermanagh forward Conor Love is prepared for another "tough battle" when they face Kildare in Sunday's Tailteann Cup semi-final at Croke Park (16:00 BST). The Ernesiders reached the last four of the competition for the very first time by beating Sligo at Brewster Park last weekend. Advertisement They now face a stiff test from the 'Lilywhites' who have spent the majority of their time competing at the top end of the National Leagues and battling for the Sam Maguire Cup. The two most recent winners of the Tailteann Cup in Meath and Down have more than held their own in the All-Ireland Championship this year. The Royals have already secured direct passage to the last eight while Down are the kick of a ball away from joining them. That same Down side many will feel were lucky to get past Fermanagh in the Ulster Championship and Love is hoping his side can replicate their success. "It'll be another tough battle for us, I suppose Kildare have definitely been there more recently than us at the top table, so it's more of a stepping stone for them, but we're looking at the likes of Down and Meath in the past couple of years and hoping to emulate them," Love told BBC Sport NI. Advertisement "Down have really shown the way for teams like ourselves. We were a kick away, but a kick away is a big kick in these games, so if we just followed along their path, I think we'd be more than happy. "I don't think easy as winning it [Tailteann Cup] and getting to where Down and Meath are at the minute, but it's definitely a great place to start. I think that's the great thing about the Tailteann Cup. "There's been critics, but I think the the proof's in the pudding. Meath have ended up beating Dublin and Kerry this year and a couple of years ago they were playing teams like us in the league. So, it's something we're looking forward to hopefully emulating." Days out in Croke Park are not a regular occurrence for the people of County Fermanagh but this Sunday will mark a second appearance at GAA headquarters this summer. Advertisement The north Dublin venue was selected as the neutral ground for their group win over Wexford, a game in which the Enniskillen Gaels man starred in by kicking nine points, but Love was quick to allude to a greater significance. "It was more a monkey off the back for Fermanagh. It was 2004 the last time we got a win in Croke Park, which is massive," he added. "We'll take it, even if it was a group game. Less of a meaning maybe, but we 100% needed that. That's a couple of weeks ago, so the lads know what we need to do. "It's great to see the crowds we've been getting the last couple of games, so hopefully it continues, but it can't hurt going back to Croke Park a number of times."

Love shines at Croke Park as Fermanagh see off Wexford to top Group 4
Seven second-half points from Conor Love powered Fermanagh past Wexford and to a top-place finish in Group 4 of the Tailteann Cup after Sunday's clash at Croke Park. Fermanagh quickly asserted after trailing by 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time to take control of proceedings, with Love on song as midfielder Darragh McGurn also made his presence felt. It completed an exemplary recovery by Fermanagh from their shock opening day loss to Carlow as they secure a fortnight's break and a home quarter-final. Wexford, meanwhile, after a second defeat at GAA HQ this season – having lost the Division 4 league final to Limerick – must settle for a home preliminary quarter-final. Wexford overcame a jittery start to respond by crafting a 1-3 to 0-2 lead after thirteen minutes. Fionan O'Brien slotted over a second-minute free for Fermanagh as Kieran Donnelly's men attacked with some relish from the start. And Ronan McCaffrey was denied a goal for the Ulster men at the expense of a fruitless '45 in the seventh minute after a neat move involving Conor McGee and Conor Love, shortly before midfielder Joe McDade settled Fermanagh into a 0-2 to no-score advantage. Wexford eventually hit their stride to turn the tables in quite some fashion. Páraic Hughes levelled with a two-pointer before Mark Rossiter turned over the subsequent kick-out to send Seán Nolan haring in from the Cusack Stand side to slot to the net in the twelfth minute (1-2 to 0-2). Both sides went close with goal chances before Rossiter boosted Wexford further with another two-pointer, but Fermanagh remained dangerous as O'Brien, McDade and Love shaved the margin to 1-5 to 0-5 after 24 minutes. The Ernesiders generated another goal threat, with Wexford 'keeper Darragh Brooks saving low from the lively Fionan O'Brien. Wexford had a third two-pointer – midfielder Niall Hughes obliging – to lead 1-7 to 0-6 before their rivals grabbed the last three points of the half to close to within 1-8 to 0-9 at the change-of-ends as Ryan Lyons, Ronan McCaffrey and Josh Largo-Ellis hit warning signals for their opponents. The winners' misfortune in front of goal was added to seven minutes into the second-half when wing-back Shane McGullion was sent through the middle by Largo-Ellis only to see his drive fly over off the crossbar and restore parity (0-12 to 1-9). That arrived in an unanswered five-point burst as Fermanagh took hold by 0-14 to 1-9 after 45 minutes with the aid of doubles from midfielder Darragh McGurn and Conor Love. While Glen Malone and free-taker Seán Nolan had Wexford back on terms after 54 minutes (1-13 to 0-16), Fermanagh were in command at that stage, and a two-pointer from Garvan Jones allied to Love's continued excellent finishing ensured they surged to the summit of the group. Fermanagh: Seán McNally; Oisín Smyth, Lee Cullen, Luke Flanagan; Shane McGullion (0-1), Declan McCusker, Fionan O'Brien (0-2, 1f); Joe McDade (0-2), Darragh McGurn (0-3); Conor McGee, Ryan Lyons (0-1), Ronan McCaffrey (0-2); Josh Largo-Ellis (0-1), Garvan Jones (0-4, 1tp, 1f), Conor Love (0-8, 1f). Subs: Jonathan Cassidy (0-1) for Smyth (HT), Aogan Kelm for McGee (60), Seán Cassidy for Jones (63), Jack Largo-Ellis for McCusker (65). Wexford: Darragh Brooks; Liam O'Connor, Gavin Sheehan (0-2, 1tp), Michael Furlong (0-1); Eoin Porter, Eoghan Nolan, Glen Malone (0-2); Liam Coleman, Niall Hughes (0-2, 1tp); Páraic Hughes (0-4, 1tp), Tom Byrne, Mark Rossiter (0-2, 1tp); Kevin O'Grady, Martin O'Connor, Seán Nolan (1-3 0-2f). Fermanagh and Antrim lose Tailteann Cup openers
Fermanagh and Antrim fell to defeats in their opening Tailteann Cup round-robin matches on Sunday. The Ernemen were beaten 3-18 to 2-18 by Carlow in their Group Four contest at Brewster Park, while in Group Three Antrim were thrashed 4-24 to 1-17 by 2022 winners Westmeath in Mullingar. Antrim, who exited the Ulster Championship quarter-finals at the hands of Armagh last month, conceded two quickfire first-half goals at Cusack Park with Sam McCartan and Danny McCartan both on target for the home Kavan Keenan raised a green flag for the Saffrons, Luke Loughlin's penalty helped Westmeath lead 3-9 to 1-10 at the break. Matthew Whittaker scored Westmeath's fourth goal while Loughlin ended the game with a remarkable 1-17 Antrim, Fermanagh were also left with work to do after conceding two early goals in quick succession in Enniskillen as Mikey Bambrick and John Murphy struck for Carlow inside the opening 11 minutes. Fermanagh - playing for the first time since their agonising Ulster quarter-final loss to Down - responded through a Conor Love penalty, but trailed 2-9 to 1-7 at the interval. Joe McDade's goal early in the second half gave Fermanagh renewed purpose but Bambrick's second major of the afternoon inside the final 10 minutes proved a hammer blow to the Ulster side's hopes. While Fermanagh reeled off an unanswered 0-4 (including Sean McNally's two-pointed free) to cut the deficit to two, Conor Doyle's two-pointer put the result beyond doubt. Fermanagh travel to Longford for their second group game on 18 May while Antrim host Limerick on Saturday.
