Unit of Taiwan's Innolux buys former Japanese TV maker Pioneer for $1.1bn

Pioneer's booth is seen at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2025. TAIPEI (Reuters) -- CarUX, a smart cockpit solutions provider and a subsidiary of Taiwan's display maker Innolux said on Thursday it will acquire Japan's Pioneer Corporation in a deal valued at 163.6 billion yen (around $1.1 billion). Pioneer was once a major Japanese player in consumer electronics, whose decline presaged the broader industry shake-up to come as Japanese manufacturers were unable to keep with larger, more efficient producers like South Korea's Samsung Electronics.

HDMI 2.2 announced with support for up to 16K resolution at 60fps: Specs

HDMI Forum has released the HDMI 2.2 specifications to manufacturers for them to adopt to the new specifications. Labelled as the Ultra96, the HDMI 2.2 specs-based cables will support resolutions up to 16K at 60 frames-per-second (fps). Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, HDMI 2.2 and the first Ultra96 HDMI Cables, with bandwidth capabilities boosted to up to 96Gbps, could be available later this year, as reported by The Verge. 'Ultra96 is a feature name that manufacturers are encouraged to use to indicate a product supports a maximum of 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps bandwidth in compliance with the HDMI 2.2 Specification,' said HDMI Forum. HDMI 2.2: What is it So far, the current ultra high speed HDMI cable is only applicable for system configurations supporting up to 48Gbps maximum bandwidth. With the onset of HDMI 2.2, the new Ultra96 HDMI cable will be applicable for system configurations supporting up to 96Gbps maximum. These cables will be able to support resolutions 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, 10K at 120Hz, and even 16K at 60Hz. Additionally, it will also be able to handle uncompressed video formats with 10-bit and 12-bit colour at 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz. Notably, even 8K content is rare presently, let alone 10K or 16K. Which clearly means that the Ultra96 cables have not been created to address immediate demands rather it has been made to support the needs of the future. HDMI 2.1 version has existed since 2017, yet many hardware manufacturers haven't fully utilised its capabilities. The improved bandwidth and resolution support in HDMI 2.2 only aim to better future-proof the standard in the years ahead. HDMI 2.2 will also support the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), first announced in January. It enhances the audio-video sync improvements of HDMI 2.1, especially in setups where signals pass through devices like soundbars or AV receivers before reaching a display.

Honda Super EV concept is a super-tiny rival to VW's ID.2

The successor to the slow-selling Honda e is the Super EV concept. It will be on show at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, with a focus on driving fun. While the 'Super EV' concept may sound supersized, it is just the opposite. For this is a tiny city-focused electric car following on from the too-expensive Honda e. The Honda e was too expensive and a slow seller. The first inkling of this vehicle came at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, when Honda revealed plans for another electric city car. Back then, the concept was in its early stages. But just six months on, Honda is gearing up to show off its next-generation tiny tot. The Super EV concept will eventually become a rival to the likes of Mini Cooper and Fiat 500e, along with BYD Seagull and Citroen e-C3. Read our review of the Honda HR-V Sport. Honda has released just a single image so far of the Kei-car-like EV on a bridge outside the Palace of Westminster. Notable design features include round headlights, a bluff front end and an offset charging port. Wheels are pushed right out into the corners, the stretched wheelbase adding to interior space. Honda says the Super EV is a compact EV that's both practical and 'a joy to drive'. The car is another to debut at the Goodwood hillclimb next month, alongside the new Honda Prelude and the final Civic Type R, the Ultimate Edition. Honda's 0 Saloon will be the first of seven EVs to go on sale before 2030. This Super EV will not be one of the seven forthcoming cars to use the 0 Series platform. However, a small SUV is promised using the new architecture, probably for Asian markets. As for the Super EV production vehicle, that's likely to be sold primarily in China and Japan. However, it has not been ruled in or out for Europe or elsewhere.
