Chargers RB, Antioch High alum Najee Harris injured in fireworks mishap

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris, who burst into prominence at Antioch High School, suffered an eye injury in a fireworks accident last week, his agent confirmed Thursday. 'Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees,' Doug Hendrickson said in a statement. 'Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season.' Sgt. William Whitaker of the Antioch police department referred questions to Contra Costa Fire. That agency is conducting an active investigation into an incident that occurred early on July 5 in Antioch, according to Whitaker. He declined further comment. A spokesperson for Contra Costa Fire did not immediately respond to a voicemail message Thursday. On Sunday, the Chronicle reported six men and a 13-year-old boy were injured when a firework exploded at an Antioch apartment complex over the weekend. The man who lit the firework lost several fingers and suffered other injuries to his face and chest, Whitaker previously said. Harris was among those injured in that incident, one source told the Chronicle on Thursday. The explosion, which involved a high-grade firework according to police, occurred about 12:20 a.m. on Saturday (July 5) in a back alley at an apartment complex on Spanos Street, off Sycamore Drive. That's near where Harris lived when he attended Antioch High. Paramedics took four of the men to a hospital, Whitaker said Sunday. Two others drove themselves to a hospital, and the boy declined medical treatment. All of the men were in their twenties, police said, and the extent of their injuries was unclear. Harris, 27, gained 7,948 yards during his high-school career, becoming the Bay Area's all-time leading prep rusher. He also gained acclaim as the nation's No. 1 recruit, bringing high-profile college coaches from all over the country — including Alabama's Nick Saban and Michigan's Jim Harbaugh — to Antioch. Harris chose to play for the Crimson Tide. He graduated from Antioch in the middle of his senior year and enrolled at Alabama in January 2017. The Tide won two national championships during Harris' time there, and he blossomed into an All-American. He gained 3,843 yards rushing in his college career, including 1,466 as a senior in 2020. Harris finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting that year. The Pittsburgh Steelers took him in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, with the 24th overall choice. Harris gained more than 1,000 yards rushing in each of his four seasons in Pittsburgh, though the Steelers didn't win a playoff game during his time there. Then, in March, Harris signed with the Chargers as a free agent. That reconnected him with Harbaugh, who had chased Harris so vigorously when he was at Antioch. This is a breaking story. 3 women injured after fire pit explosion at Antioch barbecue

ANTIOCH, Calif. - A backyard barbecue in Antioch ended in tragedy Thursday night after a propane fire pit exploded, sending three women to the hospital. What we know Relatives said the gathering on Silveria Way was held following a funeral for a family member. The explosion occurred around 9 p.m. "It just blew up. I don't know what happened," said Beverly McIntosh, whose daughter hosted the barbecue. McIntosh said the explosion happened as her daughter was lighting the fire pit. "She didn't get a chance to pour anything on it. When she sat down, she lit it, and when she sat down, it blew up," McIntosh said. Surveillance video from neighbors captured a large emergency response from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, along with ambulance crews and police. What they're saying Two of the victims, ages 30 and 35, were airlifted to the burn unit at UC Davis Medical Center. The third was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. "We have transported three patients, one to John Muir Walnut Creek, and two to UC Davis with moderate burns to their bodies," said Battalion Chief Bob Atlas of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District. McIntosh said her daughter is recovering but shaken. "My daughter, she's kind of depressed, but she's holding in there" she said. "I was devastated when it happened, and they wouldn't let me get ner her, so that made it even worse." On Friday, McIntosh and another daughter drove to the hospital to check on their loved one.
