Regina doctors remove money from banks investing in Israeli arms industry

Dr. Kieran Conway and several colleagues wanted to do something as news of killings continued to flow out of Gaza. 'There was a group of physicians that felt really demoralized by what was happening in Gaza and feeling quite powerless about what we could do,' said Conway in a recent interview. That's why he and his fellow physicians brought forward a motion to the Regina Medical Staff Association (RMSA) annual general meeting on June 24. It called for the transfer of all funds from major Canadian banks investing in arms manufacturing over to Saskatchewan-based credit unions. Conway, a family physician and hospitalist in Regina, was among the 21 people, or 75 per cent, who voted in favour of the motion which named Scotiabank and RBC. Six voted against. Elbit Systems and Scotiabank's investment in the defence company has come under increasing scrutiny for its role in supplying weapons — including loitering munitions more commonly referred to as 'suicide drones' — following Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel in which 1,200 were killed and about 250 were taken hostage. It's difficult to assess the number of Palestinians killed in the 20 months of conflict following the Oct. 7 attack. Palestinian health authorities say more than 50,000, mostly civilians, have been killed, while the United Nations says that number is likely low. According to The Guardian, 879 Israeli soldiers have been killed since Oct. 7. The RMSA has the authority to make such decisions and the Saskatchewan Medical Association 'has no comment on it,' the SMA said an email response to questions from the Leader-Post. 'Individual securities are held based on their investment merit and are not influenced by protest activity,' Scotiabank said in an emailed statement provided Friday. And when it comes to holding of Elbit, 'Scotia Global Asset Management's exposure to Elbit Systems is 1.6 per cent of outstanding shares, as of March 31, 2025.' Past reporting from The Canadian Press indicated Scotiabank's 1832 Asset Management held 642,000 shares in Elbit at the end of second quarter 2024 which was down from about 2,237,000 shares in 2023. On Friday, Scotiabank said 1832 Asset Management holds 700,100 shares of Elbit as of March 31, 2025. Comment was sought from RBC as well, but no response was offered. Regina residents mark one-year anniversary of reignited conflict in Israel, Gaza Talk about Israeli-Palestinian conflict still on after city councillor prevents cancellation As of 2023, Scotiabank was one of the top five investors in Elbit Systems, Israel's largest weapons manufacture. Since then, the bank has reduced its holding in the company though it does still hold significant investments, according to reporting by Reuters. Between the two banks, the RMSA has more than a quarter-million dollars invested, which it will now move to local institutions. Doctors have a moral responsibility 'to stop it, and if we can't stop it, at least make sure that we're not supporting it anyway we can,' said Conway of the ongoing conflict. 'It's hard to know what to do from where we are. Myself, like all physicians, our role, the reason we came into this profession, is to support life,' he said. 'We've watched in horror as it seems Israel has tried to exterminate life in Gaza.' In early January, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) stated 'out of 36 hospitals in Gaza, Palestine, only 17 remained partially functional by early December 2024, with the other 19 closed, while over 1,000 health workers have been killed.' In 2024, a United Nations special committee found 'Israel's warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide, with mass civilian casualties and life-threatening conditions intentionally imposed on Palestinians there.' Conway said other medical associations in Canada have tried to pass similar motions, but to his knowledge none have been successful. 'I hope this shows other medical associations and other professional associations, even outside of the medical field, that there are tangible things, there is action you can take to to oppose the genocide,' he said. alsalloum@

Bad news for Dhoni's CSK, star player from team has been…

CSK opener Devon Conway has not been picked by NZ for tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe. (Photo: IANS) MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings had a season to forget in IPL 2025. The five-time IPL champions ended in last position in the IPL 2025 Points Table with just 4 wins to their name. A few weeks after the IPL 2025 season, there is more bad news in store for star player from the CSK team. New Zealand opener Devon Conway had been bought back by CSK for Rs 6.25 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. But Conway had a forgettable time in IPL 2025 season, turning out in only 6 matches for the Chennai franchise while scoring 156 runs with 2 fifties. Conway has now been omitted from the side by new Black Caps head coach Rob Walter from the squad which will play a T20 tri-series against host Zimbabwe and South Africa next month in Zimbabwe. The 33-year-old Johannesburg-born batter is one of several leading players who have turned down central contacts with New Zealand Cricket to play in professional T20 leagues around the world. Conway last played for New Zealand in June of last year, in their last group match at the T20 World Cup 2024. Why is Kane Williamson not available? Former captain Kane Williamson made himself unavailable while playing for Middlesex in England's county championship. Mumbai Indians batter Bevon Jacobs is the only uncapped player in the 15-man squad named by Walter on Friday. The 23-year-old Jacobs was a member of the New Zealand squad that played Sri Lanka in December but did not play a game. He was bought for Rs 30 lakh by Nita Ambani's MI but didn't feature in any game in IPL 2025 season. MLC 2025 stars called up into squad Pacer Adam Milne has been recalled for the first time since November after performing well in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season in the United States. Meanwhile, in-form Finn Allen, who is the leading run-scorer in MLC 2025, and Tim Seifert also return to the squad which will be captained by MI all-rounder Mitchell Santner. Allen recently hit a world-record 19 sixes in an innings of 151 for the San Francisco Unicorns in MLC 2025. 'We've got a really strong squad for this tour and I'm looking forward to getting the team together and getting into the work,' Walter said. 'We've got some good experience in the side and it's nice to be able to welcome back a few of the players who missed the March series against Pakistan because of the IPL.' The tri-series will be played from July 14-26 in Harare. New Zealand squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Bevon Jacobs, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Will O'Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi

Born in Johannesburg, Conway has scored 4,675 international runs representing the Black Caps. The left-handed batter made headlines with a double century on his Test debut at Lord's and was a vital part of New Zealand's campaign in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where they finished as runners-up. Currently part of the Texas Super Kings squad in Major League Cricket (MLC), Conway brings with him a wealth of experience, having featured in the Indian Premier League with Chennai Super Kings, the SA20 with Joburg Super Kings, and England's T20 Blast with Somerset. Since making his T20I debut for New Zealand in 2020, Devon Conway has featured in 50 matches, scoring 1,408 runs at an average of 38.05 and a strike rate of 127.76. In an interview with , the 33-year-old spoke about the challenges and learning curves of playing in multiple T20 leagues around the world and how he's using his experience to guide young American talent while pushing for a title with TSK. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo You've played the IPL, the SA20, the MLC and England's Blast. How has each experience shaped you as a cricketer and as a person? Playing in the three different competitions has allowed me to adapt my game to suit different surfaces. As we all know, batting on these pitches are very different in America as compared to South Africa and India. So it's a great opportunity for me to get to know different players from around the world, as well as play on different conditions to adapt my game. Major League Cricket 2025 Explained: Teams, Schedule & Where to Watch What has stood out to you the most about cricket culture in the USA? The thing that stood out the most to me in the cricket culture in the US is how young it is. There is interest, particularly with the youth around at the games. It's great to see that people are coming in and watching and supporting. So that's one thing I've noticed in particular in the US playing cricket. How has the team dynamic at Texas Super Kings helped you settle into the MLC? I think the team culture that we have here is great. It's driven from the top, with coach Stephen Fleming and captain Faf du Plessis. I think they allow guys to come into this environment, express themselves, enjoy their cricket, and just be a good person within this group. So we've got a great culture and we all get along really well as a group. Poll What do you believe is Devon Conway's biggest strength as a cricketer? Consistency across formats Experience in multiple leagues With your international pedigree, what advice do you share with young American cricketers in the squad? The advice I have for the American local players in our squad is just to go out there, express yourself, have fun, try and learn from some of the senior players. We've got a vast amount of experience to talk to. Guys like Faf du Plessis, Marcus Stoinis, guys who have played a lot of cricket throughout their careers. So try and watch how they go about their business, learn from what they do well, and just enjoy the experience. What's your assessment of the playing conditions and competition level in MLC? I think the playing conditions are great here at the MLC. We've only played at two venues since this tournament has started, so I'm looking forward to playing in Florida as well as San Francisco. So I'm eagerly waiting to see what the conditions are like, and I think the competitiveness is fantastic. We've come short twice, and we're looking forward to trying to win that trophy this year. Getting ready for this week's Alexandra Primary schools' Kiwilele Ukulele Jam are St Gerard's School pupils (back from left) Ellie Lanham, Molly Donaldson, both 10, and Sidney Corder, 8. In front are Albert Joseph (left) and Lucy Lake, both 8. PHOTO: JULIE ASHER Throngs of excited children wielding ukuleles filled the Alexandra Memorial Hall on Tuesday for a jam session complete with accompanying band. Organiser Liz Conway said the Kiwilele Ukulele Jam was a chance for the children to play together, just as they were. Some were more experienced than others but that did not matter, Mrs Conway said. There was no audience so there was no sense of being on show but an encouraging atmosphere led by the band made up of parents of the strummers. At St Gerard's during an lunchtime practice, pupils were enthusiastic about the class set of brightly coloured instruments they had been given by the New Zealand Ukulele Trust. Mrs Conway said this year the Kiwilele Ukulele Jam, which was supported by the NZ Ukulele Trust and Central Lakes Trust, included all Alexandra primary schools and Clyde Primary School, in two sessions. Last year was the first time the jam was held in Alexandra and it included pupils from St Gerard's and Alexandra Primary. This year Terrace and Clyde Primary Schools joined the fun.

‘Belfast just feels right': Giants' star winger completes top line returnees for new season

The 29-year-old New Jersey native has put pen to paper on a deal that means he will play a third season with the Giants and that the defending Elite League and Challenge Cup champions have their top three forwards back for their title defences. A prolific scorer in the Elite League, Piccinich netted 29 goals and 65 points in 73 games for the Giants last season on their way to the double, including scoring in the Challenge Cup Final against the Cardiff Devils, good for second top scorer on the team behind only Conway. Including his first remarkable season with the team, in which he also won the double, the former Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick has scored 72 goals and 163 points in 141 games in Belfast, winning four trophies in two seasons. Bringing back the trio is a statement of intent to the rest of the League from Adam Keefe and the Giants, and Piccinich says that they will not let their ambitions drop just because they've had success before. 'Belfast just feels right. The culture here, the support from the fans, and the standard that's expected – it all pushes you to be your best,' said Piccinich. "Coming back last season reminded me how special this place is, and I'm thrilled to be here again for 2025/26. We have the talent and determination to compete for every trophy, and I want to be part of bringing more success to this organisation.' Piccinich joined the Giants when the Elite League resumed following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 following four seasons as a professional predominantly in the ECHL but also featuring a short 10-game stint in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies and San Antonio Rampage. But in Belfast he quickly became a hit, finding instant chemistry with Conway and Goodwin and emerging as one of the League's best forwards, scoring 43 goals and 97 points in his debut season in teal as the Giants clinched the League and Cup double, falling one game short of the Grand Slam. That would lead to a switch to Norwegian side Stjernen Hockey where he spent two seasons, the second of which saw him handed an 'A', and he would rack up 51 goals and 129 points in 93 games there, which included a superb Play-Off display in his second season where he scored six goals and eight points in five games. Despite agreeing a deal that covered last season in Stjernen, a break clause enabled the former London Knights captain to return to the SSE Arena last summer and it proved an excellent decision, the right winger coming back and winning two more trophies in teal, lifting the Cup before adding the League title, too.
