NBA legend Magic Johnson is mobbed by fans in Portofino as he heads out for glitzy lunch in bold outfit
NBA legend Magic Johnson continued his European tour on Wednesday as he was mobbed by fans while heading out for lunch in Portofino. The basketball player-turned-billionaire businessman, 65, was spotted in Monaco earlier in the week but has since traveled further along the Riviera coastline and into Italy. He was all smiles as he headed out into the town for a spot of lunch, donning a jazzy red shirt and white pants as he dined with friends and family. In a video posted to his Instagram, he can be seen holding hands with his beloved wife Cookie, as they approach their 34th wedding anniversary in September. Magic was dining with his friends Mike and Natasha Triplett, Rodney and Holly Peete and John and Vicki Palmer, at the glitzy Ristorante Puny on the waters' edge. Johnson - a five-time NBA champion and Los Angeles Lakers legend - was happy to stop for photos with his adoring fans, grinning for the camera as he made his way through the cobbled streets. Johnson's trip to the Riviera has become an annual jaunt and recent reports claimed the yacht he charters costs a whopping $1.4million a week. For Johnson, though, that is a drop in the ocean given his estimated net worth of $1.5billion - almost 25 years on from his basketball retirement. Nowadays, he is part of the ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Commanders among others, and has become one of the most high-profile off-field names in sports. Magic chats to a friend as he walks through the cobbled streets of Portofino on Wednesday On his European trip, Johnson has previously been spotted on the island of Corfu, as well as in Capri - in Italy - and both Montenegro and Croatia. Last week, he posted a video of him keeping fit and healthy by walking on a treadmill on the deck of his yacht. Johnson has been keeping himself in great shape over the past few years, and is still fit and healthy and exercising regularly at the age of 65. The iconic point guard is still regarded as the greatest ever to play in the position.

Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie Johnson, enjoy a yacht costume party during their summer getaway Magic Johnson took to Instagram to offer fans a peek into one of the more entertaining nights of his vacation. In his latest Instagram post, he shared a glimpse of a toga-themed costume party aboard a lavish yacht. 'We had a fun toga party on the yacht last night with our friends and the crew!' he captioned the post, tagging his wife, Cookie Johnson. "I didn't want people to treat us like we were lepers" - Cookie Johnson did not want Magic to announce his HIV diagnosis in press conference
When Magic Johnson learned that he had contracted HIV, the first person who came to his mind was his wife, Cookie. Magic and Cookie had just tied the knot a month earlier, and she was pregnant with their first child. Telling her that he had the virus that causes AIDS would not only be heartbreaking but also very disappointing for her. But when the Los Angeles Lakers legend got home that day, Cookie was not mad at him. Rather, she was worried about the possibility that her husband would die young because, during that time, that's how it was supposed to end. "It wasn't how he got it that was important to me. It was, 'You're possibly going to die.' And that trumped everything," she told CBS News. During the '90s, HIV was considered a death sentence because it led to AIDS. Back then, azidothymidine (AZT) was the only treatment for HIV, and while it could slow down the progression of the disease, it was still considered a dangerous terminal illness. Initially, Magic's doctors told him that he only had three years to live, and that's what scared Cookie. The only other issue that Cookie had with Magic's HIV diagnosis was that she did not like his idea of revealing his condition to the whole world via a press conference that was considered a major live TV event because she feared the discrimination that their entire family would be receiving because of the lack of awareness of the disease. "At that time, people weren't educated. So they thought you couldn't touch people, you couldn't hug people," she said. "And I didn't want people to treat us like we were lepers."After a heart-to-heart talk, she agreed to support his decision, just as she did every move he made after the announcement. Cookie ended up attending Magic's press conference and sat on his right side beside Lakers team owner Jerry Buss. She wore an all-white suit to the event, and she said she did so to symbolize "brightness" and "future." The decision to hold that press conference turned out to be a stroke of genius because it raised awareness and education about HIV and AIDS. The number of Americans getting tested for HIV significantly increased after Magic's press conference. It also helped break down the stigma surrounding the diseases and enabled patients to live everyday lives within their communities. Today, the rate of new HIV infections worldwide has dropped by 60 percent from its peak in 1995. While it's still an incurable disease, HIV is highly treatable and manageable. With more effective treatments than in 1991, patients are living longer and healthier lives. As for Magic, his HIV is currently undetectable in his system. But as he preaches, Johnson is not cured and is regularly taking his medication. While he would still have ended up alive today if he had just kept quiet and fought his battle alone in 1991 because of his money and connections, more HIV patients are alive and healthier today because Earvin chose to combat it with the world watching.
