Creamline, Cignal off to 2-0 start in PVL On Tour

Creamline and Cignal made strong early impressions in the PVL On Tour, going unbeaten through two games after dispatching separate foes on Monday at the Chavit Coliseum in Ilocos Sur. The Cool Smashers recovered from a Set 2 loss en route to a 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18 win over Akari behind an all-around outing from team captain Alyssa Valdez. The seasoned outside spiker dropped 16 points anchored on 13 attacks, two aces, and one block together with 18 receptions to help Creamline surge to a 2-0 start following their dominant three-set victory over Capital1 yesterday. "Syempre happy kami na kahit back-to-back 'yung games namin. Kasi first time na nangyari sa'min na magkasunod na araw, siguro marami pa kaming i-improve," Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses said. "Sana magtuloy-tuloy 'yung maganda laro namin." Creamline flexed its muscle early in Set 4 in bid to close out the Chargers with Michele Gumabao unleashing back-to-back hammers from the right wing to give the Cool Smashers a 19-11 lead. Akari fought back with Eli Soyud and rookie Chenie Tagaod slicing the gap to five, 15-20. But a service error from Soyud and a Jema Galanza denial on a running attack from Ced Domingo saw Creamline taking a 23-16 cushion. Akari once again tried to mount a comeback with two straight points, including a drop ball hit from Grethcel Soltones, but the latter was then rejected by Pangs Panaga on the next play that allowed Creamline to clinch the match point at 24-18. A successful floor touch challenge, meanwhile, by Creamline sealed the four-set romp. Earlier, Cignal cruised to yet another sweep victory after blanking the struggling Capital1 side, 25-21, 25-22, 25-16, behind a total team effort. Erika Santos continued her fine performance with 11 points while middle blocker Roselyn Doria-Aquino churned out 10 markers as they improved to a 2-0 slate in Pool B. With their losses, Capital1 and Akari both slid to 0-2. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Creamline spoils Jorge de Brito's Capital1 debut with sweep win

(Photo: PVL) Creamline made easy work of a revamped Capital1 with a 25-10, 25-21, 25-10 win to kick off its campaign in the PVL On Tour on Sunday at the Chavit Coliseum in Ilocos Sur. The Cool Smashers, eager to bounce back from an unusual silver medal finish in the previous All-Filipino Conference, dominated right from the get-go until the final point to spoil new Capital1 head coach Jorge de Brito's debut game. "Happy kami kasi 'yung start ng campaign namin ay maganda, especially na maiksi 'yung preparation. Sa next game namin may aayusin pa namin," Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses said. Rookie Sheena Toring showed no jitters in her first game as a professional player, shining early on and delivering the quick kill that sent Cool Smashers to a 24-20 lead in Set 2. But the Solar Spikers fought back with Rovena Instrella powering a quick 2-0 run before Alyssa Valdez unleashed one from the left wing to wrap it up. Creamline came out firing in Set 3, unleashing a blistering 7-2 run to set the tone early before Rachel Austero provided some source of light for Capital1 on her quick kill, 6-9. That was the closest they got as the Cool Smashers responded with a lethal 11-1 run highlighted by three straight hammers from Jema Galanza and a Lorie Bernardo rejection on Trisha Genesis for a huge 20-7 cushion. The lefty Bernardo, who is a natural middle blocker, proved she can also deliver as a wing spiker after converting three of their last four points from the opposite side. Galanza top-scored Creamline with 12 points and eight digs while Michele Gumabao and Pangs Panaga chipped in 11 and 10 markers apiece as the veterans led the way in the absence of other starters Bea De Leon, Tots Carlos, and Denden Lazaro. Capital1, who has yet to unveil top rookie pick Bella Belen, relied on Instrella, who tallied seven points laced with four digs. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Alyssa Valdez happy for Jia De Guzman's Creamline return

Alyssa Valdez herself is happy for Jia De Guzman's upcoming return to Creamline. After a two-year stint in Japan, De Guzman is returning to the Philippines and will rejoin the Cool Smashers in the PVL. For Valdez, De Guzman's comeback will boost the squad. "Even before Jia's coming, going to Japan and joining Alas, we know Jia is Jia. With all the experiences she's getting on and off the court, I think more than ever, she's gonna be one of the ates in the team," Valdez told reporters on the sidelines of the signing of the partnership agreement between Rebisco clubs and Allianz PNB Life. "I'm just really glad I've witness all these ups, wala yatang downs si Jia eh, all these ups in her career and really, we're all gonna be here. I'm always gonna be here always supporting here." Valdez also relished her upcoming reunion with fellow Atenean Be De Leon with the team. "Nakaka-feel bata. Nakaka-feel na bata pa rin kami just because we've always been together since then and who would've thought we'll be together again all these years? Reminiscing all those good and bad memories together, it's been tough, but I think we'll always get to answer the reason why we're playing: it's because of the team, the players where were with, and more reason to really actually play better in the upcoming season," she added. Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses, meanwhile, said having De Guzman back in the team, on top of a more experienced Kyle Negrito, is a "good problem to have." "Siyempre 'yung Jia talagang nandyan na, si Kyle pinagtrabahuhan ang spot niya sa Creamline, so let's see, pero it's a good problem to have, sabi nga namin," he said. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
