Live Events "In India, cooperatives have now gone beyond their traditional boundaries and have become a medium for innovation and self-reliance in areas such as digital services, healthcare, education, energy, organic farming, and financial inclusion," he said. Shah said that technological innovation is making cooperatives more inclusive today. The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Kenya and the Permanent Mission of Mongolia to the United Nations, organised the event to mark the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters. Shah voiced his firm belief that the principles of cooperatives, their values, and their people-centric approach make them one of the most impactful models of human-centred development. The Ministry of Cooperation was established in July 2021, and Shah became the first Minister of Cooperation of the country. Today, over 840,000 cooperative societies in the country have more than 320 million members actively engaged. With a view to make cooperative products globally competitive, India has set up three multi-state cooperative societies - Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL), National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) and National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL). Shah pointed out that India has recently established the Tribhuvan Sahkari University, which will serve as a hub for education, research, innovation, and leadership development at the national level in the cooperative sector. Alongside this, the formulation of the National Cooperation Policy marks a historic step toward making the cooperative movement more transparent, accountable, and future-oriented, he said. He further noted that India's world-largest grain storage plan is being implemented through cooperatives, emphasising that this initiative not only strengthens food security but also ensures organised markets and increased prices for farmers. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish highlighted the vital role played by the cooperative sector in India's national growth. Noting the steps taken by the Government of India to strengthen the cooperative sector, including the National Cooperative Policy 2025-45, he stressed the need to use new and emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, to make cooperatives more effective and capable of facing emerging new challenges. Amit Shah lauds Sukhu govt for natural farming initiatives in Himachal
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah praised the Himachal government's initiatives in natural farming at the Manthan Baithak held recently on cooperatives, a state government spokesperson said on Friday. The spokesperson said Shah especially commended Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for taking the lead in promoting chemical-free agriculture, setting an example for the rest of the country. The meeting was attended by cooperative ministers from all states. The spokesperson quoted Shah as saying, 'Himachal mein natural farming main bahut acche experiments hue hain (There have been very good experiments of natural farming in Himachal)'. Thousands of farmers in Himachal Pradesh have shifted to natural farming as the state lays special emphasis on strengthening the rural economy. With over 80 per cent of the population residing in rural areas, agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry continue to be the main sources of livelihood. Sukhu stated that there has been a steady and encouraging rise in the number of farmers adopting natural farming practices. Over 2.23 lakh farmers and horticulturists across almost all panchayats have already embraced chemical-free agriculture, either partially or fully. He informed that Himachal Pradesh is the first state in the country to promote natural farming by introducing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for various crops cultivated through this method. Last year, an MSP of Rs 30 per kg was fixed for maize, which has now been increased to Rs 40 per kg. So far, the government has procured around 400 metric tonnes of maize from 1,509 farmers at the revised support price. Similarly, wheat and raw turmeric grown under natural farming techniques are being procured at an MSP of Rs 60 per kg and Rs 90 per kg respectively. This turmeric will be processed and marketed under the brand name 'Himachal Haldi'. The state government aims to connect 9.61 lakh farmers with natural farming in a phased manner. In another significant move, the government has declared the Pangi sub-division in Chamba district as the state's first natural farming sub-division, with the goal of preserving traditional farming practices, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable livelihoods in the remote tribal valley. Currently, around 2,244 farmer families in Pangi are practicing chemical-free farming. The government plans to convert all 2,920 hectares of cultivated land in the valley to 100 per cent natural farming. This initiative is expected to boost tribal entrepreneurship, preserve heirloom seed varieties, and celebrate the region's agro-cultural heritage. It will also ensure fair and remunerative prices for farmers, many of whom had earlier been forced to lease out their land while living outside the valley. To support the marketing of natural produce, designated spaces are being developed in 10 market yards with requisite infrastructure. Under the Prakritik Kheti–Khushal Kisan Yojana, a natural farming scheme, a total expenditure of Rs 27.60 crore was incurred during 2023–2024.

President's rule in Manipur extended by six months
New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) The ongoing President's rule in Manipur will be extended for a period of six months effective from August 13, 2025. According to a parliamentary bulletin dated July 24, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Minister of Cooperation has given a notice on the following resolution which has been admitted. According to the Bulletin No. 65663, the resolution says, 'That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the 13th February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025.' The resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh earlier this year led to the imposition of President's rule in Manipur from February 13. Ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, after Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities clashed, leaving more than 250 people dead and some 60,000 others displaced. Most of the displaced people continue to live in relief camps. The violence followed tribals in the hill districts taking out a solidarity rally to protest the State government's alleged move to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the Meiteis concentrated in the Imphal Valley, which, along with the Jiribam area, comprises about 10% of Manipur's geographical area.
