Fallout 5 may not be made by Bethesda as Elder Scrolls 6 enters ‘playable state'

With Starfield DLC and The Elder Scrolls 6 still on the way, Todd Howard may be prepared to cede control of Fallout 5 to another developer. It's a decade now since the release of Fallout 4 and yet no new game has been announced yet, even in the wake of the hugely successful Amazon TV show, which is already commissioned for seasons 2 and 3. Rumours last week suggested that multiple new Fallout titles are currently in development, with a new Fallout: New Vegas release – either a remaster or a sequel – amongst them. There was still no hint as to when anything might be announced but now there are rumours, from a different insider, about Fallout 5. Before the Amazon show, Fallout 5 wasn't expected until after The Elder Scrolls 6, meaning that it could be the best part of a decade until it's out. But a new report suggests that you might not have to wait that long, because it's not necessarily being made by the usual team. The Elder Scrolls 6 is assumed to be aiming for a release date of somewhere around 2028, which will be 17 years after the release of Skyrim – a staggeringly long time to leave such a successful game without a sequel. That's in part because Bethesda Game Studios, the internal developer led by Todd Howard, has been working on Starfield in recent years, although its poor reception has many fans wondering whether Bethesda may have abandoned previous plans for multiple DLC expansions. This issue was discussed at length on the Xbox Two Podcast, with Windows Central executive editor Jez Corden insisting that, according to his sources, work on Starfield had not been abandoned, even after the mass layoffs at Xbox. The host then suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 was still several years away from release (despite having first been announced seven years ago) but Corden corrected him by saying the game was already 'quite playable'. He didn't suggest a release date, or give any indication when the game might be seen in public again, but he was confident enough to correct the idea that the game wasn't yet in full production. The discussion then moved on to Fallout, with Corden hinting at the possibility that Bethesda Game Studios may not be making Fallout 5, which would allow it to be released much earlier than if it had to wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 to be completed. According to Corden, the mainline sequel is 'fully greenlit' and ready to move ahead, although given modern production times that still implies it's going to be at least five years until it's finished. More Trending He admits that he has only one source for his information but then implies that the developer is not Bethesda Game Studios, or rather that Todd Howard – who usually takes the lead on all the games – is not the director. Corden suggests that ZeniMax Online, makers of The Elder Scrolls Online, will be put to work on the franchise in some way, and that the reason their new MMO, codenamed Blackbird, had been cancelled was so that they could make Fallout games instead. 'It was a case of, 'Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [Blackbird] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?', said Corden. Although Corden does not state for certain that ZeniMax Online is the sole developer of Fallout 5, it doesn't require any inside sources to know that Microsoft would want the game out before 2033, which is the absolute earliest if Bethesda Game Studios was the sole developer. Rihanna makes James Corden wait 8 years before finally joining him for duet in 'Smurfs'

James Corden has finally sung with Rihanna — just not in the way fans expected. After eight years of trying to book her for Carpool Karaoke, the Late Late Show host revealed at the world premiere of Smurfs in Brussels that he and Rihanna recorded a duet for the animated film. 'I tried for eight years to get Rihanna to do a Carpool Karaoke,' said Corden. 'She would always say to me, 'When the new record is out.' And then I finished the show before that record came out.' While Rihanna hasn't dropped a full studio album since Anti in 2016, she released 'Friend of Mine' for the Smurfs soundtrack — a track fans are calling a 'club hit.' It was enough to get her behind the mic with Corden, who voices No Name Smurf, while Rihanna stars as Smurfette. 'She can really sing. But he can too! It was one of the biggest surprises of the whole thing,' Rihanna said of their musical moment. Corden joked, 'I can't talk seriously about singing with Rihanna, because it's silly.' But he also added he 'legitimately would' bring back Carpool Karaoke for one week — if Rihanna's new album ever arrives. The animated film features an ensemble cast including Dan Levy, Sandra Oh, John Goodman, and Maya Erskine. It hits theatres on Friday, July 18.

Xbox is being set up to fail by Microsoft bosses, claims insider

As the fallout from Xbox's brutal job cuts continues, more layoffs seem inevitable as Microsoft execs set targets that are going to be almost impossible to meet. There's still very little official information about the Xbox job cuts from last week, but estimates suggest that around 4,000 people were laid off. The worst thing is that rumours immediately suggested that more cuts are to come, despite over 6,000 jobs already having been cut in less than two years. Microsoft has given no real explanation for the enormous cuts, but an insider suggests that they're been driven by execs outside of Xbox, in part because of the enormous $75.4 billion cost of buying Activision Blizzard. According to Windows Central's Jez Corden, Microsoft's chief financial officer Amy Hood has imposed 'utterly unrealistic financial requirements' that will 'continue hurting the division' and lead to more layoffs in the future. Tom Warren of The Verge replied to Corden's tweet, saying: 'I don't think it's unrealistic, it's just the reality of the Xbox business after the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Without that deal Xbox revenue would be down, and the Game Pass gamble hasn't paid off yet.' To that Corden, merely replied, 'Disagree.' The two are the most high-profile Microsoft insiders and they don't seem to disagree over the idea that Xbox is chasing some extremely difficult targets, with no obvious sign that the current line-up of games can significantly change their fortunes. Microsoft CFO Amy Hood has given Xbox an utterly unrealistic financial requirement that is going to continue hurting the division. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. At the same time, a report by The Seattle Times points out that Microsoft has laid off over 15,000 people in total during 2025 (and remember, we're only halfway through the year so far) and supposedly it's primarily to free up money to invest more in AI. Microsoft has previously stated that the layoffs have, in part, been an attempt to remove middle managers, but the report suggests that only about 17% of the cuts at Microsoft's Redmond HQ were managers. More Trending Instead, software engineers were hardest hit, along with product and program managers. Software engineers in particular are the most vulnerable to being replaced with AI but perhaps Microsoft feels managers would be viewed as less sympathetically by the wider public. However, the report suggests that the company's focus is not replacing workers with AI but simply saving money by laying them off, in order to invest more into AI infrastructure. Microsoft plans to spend more than $80 billion – slightly more than the cost of buying Activision Blizzard in 2023 – to 'meet AI demands' and the layoffs are apparently the flipside of that decision. All of this turmoil takes place as Microsoft enjoys some of its best financial results of recent years, making $26 billion in profit on the back of $70 billion sales, beating both Apple and Nvidia, and exceeding analyst estimates.
