William Byron Rebounds from Speeding Penalty to Win Xfinity Series Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

The No. 17 Xfinity Series Hendrick Motorsports entry just had its last win with a Cup Series regular before it's allotted for eight straight races to Hendrick prospect Corey Day. Byron took the second win for the split No. 17 entry of 2025 in the lower NASCAR series by rebounding from a speeding penalty at the start of the final stage. Byron swept the first two stages before speeding on pit row and being sent to the back of the pack through a pass-through penalty. A slew of late race cautions helped the North Carolinian native make up his way to the front of the pack after he successfully navigated himself from the back of the field to midpack through green flag runs. After the seventh caution, with around 12 laps to go, Justin Allgaier made potentially his race-losing mistake when he stayed out, dragging Sheldon Creed, Connor Zilisch, and others off the pit row, while the majority of the field decided to pit for better tires. Through the final four late cautions and overtime, this means that Allgaier was fighting on 30-lap older tires than Byron, who positioned himself behind the JR Motorsports No. 7 on the final restart, pushing him clear of Zilisch. Once the two cleared Zilisch on the inside line, Byron went low, got Allgaier loose, and quickly made the pass for the lead halfway through the green flag lap of overtime. He would go on to extend that lead over a lap and a half to 0.302 over Zilisch. This was Zilisch's first race back after sitting out the Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway to focus on his recovery after a brutal hit at Talladega Motor Speedway last month. In that race, Byron's teammate Kyle Larson filled in for Zilisch to win in the No. 88 Jr Motorsports car. Zilisch has already been granted a playoff waiver for NASCAR and presumably will race in the playoffs with a win already secured at the Circuit of the Americas. When Allgaier fell back after having to save himself following the Byron pass, Nick Sanchez made it by as well, with Sanchez finishing third and Allgaier fourth. Hendrick Motorsports announces star-studded 16-race Xfinity Series schedule

In 2025, Hendrick Motorsports will field its No. 17 Chevrolet in a 16-race NASCAR Xfinity Series slate featuring the organization's four NASCAR Cup Series stars and newcomer Corey Day. The effort will be led by crew chief Adam Wall. William Byron will kick off the schedule March 1 at Circuit of The Americas, marking his first of two races in the No. 17 Chevy. Kyle Larson will also make two appearances while teammates Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman will each drive once. MORE: Day is scheduled for 10 starts for the team, including his Xfinity Series debut March 29 at Martinsville Speedway. The 19-year-old dirt racing phenom signed with Hendrick Motorsports in December and will race nearly 30 pavement events in 2025 across a variety of series. 'We're pleased to continue our sponsorship of the No. 17 team, which has driven significant traffic to and helped support the broader goals of Hendrick Automotive Group,' said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman and chief executive officer of Hendrick Automotive Group. 'With Adam, we have one of the sharpest young crew chiefs in the garage area leading our team. The Xfinity Series competition is tough, and we're looking forward to the challenge.' Wall, 35, spent the 2024 season as a crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports where he spearheaded Xfinity Series efforts for drivers Sammy Smith and Brandon Jones. He joined Hendrick Motorsports as an engineer in 2011 before spending three seasons at JRM from 2016-2018. Wall returned to Hendrick Motorsports the following year, rising to become the lead race engineer for Larson and winning the 2021 Cup Series championship. 'Hendrick Motorsports has opened a lot of doors for me,' Wall said. 'Because of the valuable experience I've gained, I feel very prepared for this opportunity. I'm excited about the chance to go racing with our Cup drivers and work with a young talent like Corey. Anyone who follows dirt knows he's the real deal. We have high expectations as a team and look forward to a great year.' Since 2022, the No. 17 team has recorded two wins (both in 2024), four pole positions, 11 top-five finishes and 13 top-10s in 20 Xfinity Series starts with a variety of drivers.
