Izz Cafe owner wishes luck to Cork hurlers from Palestine

The Palestinian owner of Cork's Izz Cafe has described how he's fallen in love with Cork hurling as he wished the Rebels the best of luck in their quest for All-Ireland glory. Izz Alkarajeh, whose Palestinian cafe in Cork City has won multiple awards for its food, returned to Palestine this week to visit family while his homeland is deep in a devastating conflict with Israel. The video on Facebook consisted of Izz talking to the camera while wearing an alternative black and red Cork jersey. He described how he has fallen in love with the game of hurling since moving to the Rebel County. Izz described himself as a 'true Corkonian'. "From the heart of Palestine to the Rebel County, I am sending all my love and luck to the Cork hurlers this Sunday. Corcaigh Abú!" the businessman said. The caption on the post read: "We are hoping @officialcorkgaa make history this weekend. While we are currently visiting family in Palestine, we are with you in spirit and will be watching closely!" Izz and wife Eman's journey to Cork, where they set up their successful cafe, is as inspiring as it is deeply emotional, and can be read here. Rebels here, there, everywhere! Cork hurlers will be cheered on from across the globe this Sunday

That's the population of Cork city and county, according to the last Census in 2022. The largest, proudest, and some would say cockiest county in the country. Cork people will tell you that the least amount of people emigrate from the Rebel County, and the most return to settle on the Banks of the Lee (a fact that's yet to be verified), but in spite of this, you're still likely to spot a Corkonian somewhere across the world. And as the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship rolls around this Sunday, houses and gardens from Auckland to Vancouver are being dressed up in the red and white, as those who can't make it home for the huge match do their best to connect home, with the Rebels looking to secure their 31st Liam MacCarthy Cup. One man who will be at Croker, making his sixth trip back home to support the Rebels, is Luxembourg-resident Damien Higgins. 'I've been here for the last 20 years, but try and make it back at least four or five times a year for matches, whether it's the hurlers, the footballers, or Cork City games. 'This year I've made it to the Tipperary round robin game and the semi-final against Dublin, as well as getting both games against Kerry for the footballers, and three home Cork City matches at Christmas. 'My Dad used to be a referee, so I would have gotten tickets through him, but last year I had to hit the roads early in Dublin to try and get a ticket for the final against Clare. I was planning to do the same this year, but thankfully, someone back home has come up with a ticket last minute.' Damien says it's hard to explain the obsession to his European colleagues. 'No, they don't get it at all,' Damien laughs. 'They don't understand why I'd be spending all this money and days off to try and get home. Usually, I'd fly from Luxembourg to Dublin, which is the plan for this weekend, but you can also fly from Zurich or Charleroi to Cork, so there are plenty of options. 'If Cork play their best hurling, I think they'll win, I'm cautiously optimistic, you could say!' Learn more The Facebook group, 'Corkonians far and wide', currently has over 22,000 members and was founded by Cork native Barry Murphy, who currently resides in the historic town of Christchurch in Dorset. 'I'll be glued to the telly in the house,' Barry says. 'I'm trying to get another Cork fella living near me to join us. 'I get to hear Cork news as fast as anyone at home, it's like I never left! I fly the Cork flag wherever I go, and the fridge will be full Cork style ahead of Sunday!' Francis and Cheri Harrington already have the Cork flag flying proudly outside their home in Dundas, Ontario, Canada. Francis is a Bantry native and also has the house stocked ahead of the game. 'Up the Rebels!' he says, decked out in his Cork gear. Flags on the deck are also being displayed at the home of Dermot Hayes, who went to Germany to follow the Irish soccer team in their inaugural European Championships in 1988, and is sporting Cork, Munster, and Ireland flags – in that order. And with a 7.30 am start, local, Dermot hopefully has understanding neighbours, who will undoubtedly be woken up by their Irish neighbour watching their strange sport, if Cork lift Liam once again!

Cork beauty entrepreneur reveals the secret to his multi-million euro collaborations

It is said you should never mix business with pleasure, but for Cork-based beauty businessman Kieran Walsh, linking up with two firm pals in the form of Vogue Williams and Lisa Jordan, has been one of the most fortuitous business decisions of his life. Mr Walsh, who owns and operates the massively profitable beauty distribution company National Beauty Distribution, from his hometown of Cork, has told that a late-night tete-e-tete with firm friend Vogue Williams, was to prove the beginning of a beautiful business relationship. 'So Vogue and I knew each other for years from press stuff,' Mr Walsh told Extra. Vogue Williams with Kieran Walsh. Pic: Instagram 'And we kind of had this casual friendship where we would chat about different things in the industry,' he continued. A self-made entrepreneur with his finger on the pulse of the beauty sphere, Mr Walsh had the inklings of an idea of launching a new tan brand into the beauty market. Kieran Walsh. Pic: Instagram 'So I had been thinking about the tan category myself for a long time. I always thought that it's kind of broken,' he said 'I owned an apartment, and I was renting out at the time to two women, and I used to listen to them talking about tan, and how it stank, destroying bed sheets, so that just got me thinking about those two main kinds of problems with tan.' And a random Sunday evening casual chit-chat with Vogue Williams was to bring his idea to fruition in the form of Bare by Vogue. Kieran Walsh with Vogue Williams. Pic: Instagram 'So then Vogue and I were chatting one Sunday evening. I just messaged her on Instagram, and I said, 'like, we're talking about doing a tan.' So she rang me and she said, 'this is so weird. I was going to the office tomorrow to sign a contract for a two-year deal with a tan brand'.' 'So I said, 'don't do anything. I'll be over on Tuesday'. So I flew over and we agreed a deal that day,' recalled Mr Walsh. Bare by Vogue is now one of the biggest selling tan brands in Ireland and across the pond in the U.K, netting millions for the business-minded pair of Mr Walsh and Vogue. And as well as Vogue, Cork born Kieran also collaborated with his former school friend and fellow Corkonian Lisa Jordan. Kieran Walsh with Lisa Jordan. Pic: Instagram 'So with Lisa Jordan, I had been talking about doing makeup back as far as 2015,' Mr Walsh told Extra. 'So in 2017, we finally came to the market with the Luna by Lisa brand, and we launched four lip glosses.' In the past eight years, Luna by Lisa has grown exponentially, with her beauty range now a multi-million euro earner for Walsh and Influencer Lisa Jordan. Summer scorcher leads to Lotto player landing life-changing six-figure prize

A quick trip to the shops to grab an ice cream to help cool off from the summer sunshine led to a lucky Lotto player landing a life-changing win. The Cork player won a whopping €194,616 after matching five numbers plus the bonus in the Lotto draw on Saturday, June 21. The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Circle K Blarney, Tower Filling Station in Tower, Blarney, Co Cork. The lucky punter made the trip to National Lottery HQ this week to collect their prize, where they revealed that they had the good weather to thank for their huge win. 'I remember the day so well, it was an absolute scorcher!' the winner recalled. 'I popped in for an ice cream and on a whim, grabbed a Lotto ticket. I usually go for four lines, but the cashier accidentally printed just two. I had a feeling I couldn't let that ticket go!' However, what seemed like a mistake actually resulted in a winning move. When asked about the win, the Corkonian laughed: 'You'd get an awful slagging in Cork if people found out you'd won a bit of money!' The Cork player celebrated the huge win quietly with close family and plans to enjoy the windfall while keeping life grounded and joyful. Also making the trip to Lotto HQ this week was a Dublin-based work syndicate of 32 members who scooped an impressive €78,500 after landing the Match Five and bonus prize in Lotto draw on April 23. Their winning ticket was purchased online, and the group has been playing steadily together for the past nine years, but this is certainly their biggest windfall to date. 'We only found out recently because the email notification went to an inbox we rarely check,' one member explained. Once the news broke, excitement spread quickly. 'We sent an email around to everyone in the syndicate, and the replies came flooding in. Everyone was just so thrilled, it was such a great surprise!' The prize money is already being put to good use, with members planning holidays, weekend getaways, and well-deserved treats. The syndicate plan to continue playing the Lotto together and as they left the winners' room, spirits were high and optimism even higher. 'This is just the warm-up, we'll be back soon!' one member teased to the Lottery team. Meanwhile, a Lotto player could become Ireland's newest millionaire on Wednesday evening as tonight's jackpot rolls towards a whopping €10.5 million. Players dreaming of landing the massive sum are reminded that tickets for tonight's draw can be purchased in-store, through the National Lottery app or on the National Lottery website ahead of the 7.45pm cut-off time for sales this evening.
