Corn Facing Pressure to Start New Week
Corn price action is 1 to 2 cents lower on Monday morning. Futures closed out the Friday session with contracts 2 to 3 cents in the red as forecasts remain wet. September was down 9 cents on the week. Preliminary open interest suggested net new selling, up 19,204 contracts on Friday. The CmdtyView national average new crop Cash Corn price was down 2 1/4 cents at $3.77 As we round out July and start August, rain is expected to make its way from the northern Plains most of the Eastern Corn Belt in the next week, with 1 to 2 inches. CFTC data from Friday afternoon showed a total of 2,610 contracts added back to the net short in the managed money position as of July 22 to 177,365 contracts. Weekly Export Sales data has total corn export commitments at 70.110 MMT, which is above the USDA estimate for the full year and compared to the 102% average pace by now. Exports are now 60.172 MMT, or 86% of the USDA number and behind the 89% average. Over the weekend, President Milei of Argentina announced a reduction in the export tax for corn back to 9.5%, from 12%. AgRural estimates the Brazilian second corn crop at 68% harvested as of Thursday, shy of the 91% complete from the same week last year.. Corn Posting Early Friday Weakness
Corn price action is weaker to start Friday, with losses of 2 to 3 cents. Futures rounded out the Thursday session with contracts up 3 to 4 cents at the close. Preliminary open interest was up 13,077 contracts on Thursday. The CmdtyView national average new crop Cash Corn price was up 3 cents at $3.78. USDA reported a private export sale of 135,000 MT of corn sold to South Korea (corrected from China as USDA originally posted) on Thursday morning for new crop shipment. Another 284,196 MT was reported for unknown destinations, with 83,956 MT for 2024/25 and 200,240 MT for 2025/26. That was well above the week prior and nearly double the same week last year. Mexico was the top buyer of 346,200 MT, with 72,400 MT sold to Japan. New crop sales were tallied at 733,939 MT, back up from last week's 3-week low. Unknown destinations was the top buyer of 349,700 MT, with 171,800 MT to Japan. Another round of tenders by South Korean importers saw estimated purchases of at least 268,000 MT. Part of that was likely from the US as noted above. Corn prices are trading with 1 to 2 cent losses early on Monday morning. Futures closed the Friday session with contracts up 6 to 7 cents across most front months. September was up 12 ½ cents on the week. Preliminary open interest on Friday was up 10,834 contracts, indicating the short covering was limited, with some fresh longs. The CmdtyView national average Cash Corn price was $3.95, up 6 ½ cents. Commitment of Traders data showed managed money covering some shorts in the week ending on July 15, with their net short down 29,106 contracts to 174,755 contracts. Corn Bulls Post Gains on Wednesday
Corn futures extended the strength on Wednesday, as contracts were 4 to 5 cents in the green at the final bell. The front month CmdtyView national average Cash Corn price was up 4 1/4 cents at $3.92 3/4. EIA data released this morning put average daily ethanol production at 1.087 million barrels per day during the week that ended on July 11, up 2,000 bpd the previous week. Ethanol stocks were down 324,000 barrels to 23.635 million barrels. That was despite exports slipping 27,000 bpd to 94,000 bpd, with refiner inputs slipping 22,000 bpd to 880,000 bpd.
