Govt curbing drug peddling near edu institutions: CM
Panaji: The six cannabis plants confiscated in the first half of the year in Panaji have been sent for analysis to the Botanical Survey of India in Pune, chief minister Pramod Sawant said. The chief minister stated that regular monitoring is conducted to ensure that ganja plants are not cultivated in the state, preventing their supply to students at educational institutions. State govt has directed the staff of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to identify these plants and inform the local police for further action. 'Two different cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act are registered at the Panaji police station,' Sawant said. 'Currently, both cases are under investigation, with suspected live ganja plants seized from a public place.' Sawant mentioned that no specific hotspots have been identified as drug trafficking sites in the state. However, regular patrolling is maintained, and whenever any information is received, cases are registered against the cultivators of such plants. He said that surveillance is maintained across areas, and mass awareness has been created among the public. 'Regular police patrolling is carried out to prevent the cultivation of ganja plants, ensuring that they are not made available at schools and other educational institutions, as well as anywhere in the state,' Sawant said. In addition, awareness campaigns and workshops regarding cannabis plants and other drugs are conducted at schools and other educational institutions to sensitise students to the harmful effects of drug use, the CM said. 'It has been decided during the narco-coordination meeting to create awareness for the sanitary staff of the CCP regarding the growth of such plants in their areas and to identify these plants and inform the local police for further action,' the CM said. Over the past three and a half years, Goa police registered 14 narcotics cases and arrested 18 persons for being in illegal possession of drugs near schools and colleges. Sawant said school principals are encouraged to report any such matters to local police for necessary action. Of the 18 arrested, three persons are from Goa, 12 are non-Goans, and three are foreigners.

CCP notice to former IAS officer, says wall has no approval
Panaji: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has issued a notice to former IAS officer Subhash Chandra for constructing a compound wall at his Ribandar home by deviating from the approved plan. CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira said that the corporation did not approve the use of laterite stones instead of iron pipes. CCP has given Chandra seven days to respond to the notice. Chandra purchased the house along with the land on Feb28 from Adrian D'Costa, with locals reportedly saying that Chandra paid Rs 2.1 crore for the transaction. Chandra subsequently erected a high wall around the plot, blocking the windows of the neighbouring house, where a widow resides. Locals have alleged that Chandra encroached on the property of a widow, Antonetta Sara Pereira, and a public pathway. Based on the complaints, officials of the Panaji municipal corporation conducted an inspection on June 30 and found that the construction was not according to the development permission granted by the North Goa Planning and Development Authority. 'It is seen that there is a deviation from the approved plan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? This construction does not have approval or licence from this corporation and is also deviating from the approved plan,' said Madeira. Madeira has asked Chandra to clarify the matter within seven days. Failure to respond will lead to necessary action as per law, said the notice. On Sunday, locals held a protest meeting at Ribandar's Fondvem Chapel to highlight the illegalities. Former chief minister Manohar Parrikar's son, Uptal Parrikar, attended the meeting where he demanded action against the illegalities, if any. Chandra retired in Sep last year as secretary of the Goa Housing Board and was secretary of the social welfare department and the art and culture department.

Swap plastic for saplings in city on July 4, 5
Panaji: To nudge citizens towards sustainable waste management and eco-conscious living, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), in collaboration with the forest department, is set to launch a unique 'green booth' initiative in the state capital this Friday and Saturday. During the two-day drive, residents can bring plastic waste — from PET bottles to polythene bags — and exchange it for a sapling of their choice. The initiative will coincide with Vanmahotsava, India's annual tree-planting festival that is celebrated in the first week of July to promote afforestation. 'We want the public involved with Vanmahotsava celebrations and we also want to incentivise people by urging them to bring plastic to us in exchange for a sapling,' a forest official said. Green booths will operate at select locations across Panaji in two shifts — from 10am to 1pm and again from 4pm to 7pm. Volunteers will monitor simple wooden desks made from sustainable materials to reinforce the message of minimising plastic use. For every quantity of recyclable plastic brought in, each participant will receive one sapling from a variety of native trees, medicinal herbs, and fruit-bearing plants, encouraging them not only to dispose of waste responsibly but also to contribute to the city's green cover. 'When giving away the saplings, we will explain to people about the native plants and trees of Goa,' said Rohitesh Sutar, vice-president of the Rotaract Club of Panaji, which has partnered with the CCP and the forest department for the initiative. The project has also roped in a popular supermarket that will set up a booth at its Porvorim outlet on July 4 to extend the reach of the initiative beyond the limits of Panaji city. All the collected plastic waste will be routed to the CCP's segregation centre for recycling. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!
