KUCHING (July 4): A total of 195 residents from Bario took part in the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Outreach Programme held at SMK Bario recently, organised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak in collaboration with the Bario Secondary School Alumni Association (BSSAA). The programme began with three concurrent knowledge-sharing sessions, each tailored to students, educators, and community leaders. The first session, held in the school hall and conducted by MACC senior superintendent Maini William, focused on instilling integrity values among youths while emphasising their role in cultivating a corruption-free culture from a young age. The second session, conducted by MACC Sarawak deputy director (prevention) Wan Ahmad Nidzam on the first floor of the public library, targeted teachers from SMK Bario and SK Bario. The session highlighted the responsibility of educators as agents of change in shaping a culture of integrity within schools and the wider community. Simultaneously, the third session was held on the ground floor of the public library for local community leaders and government department heads. Led by MACC Sarawak director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh, the discussion centred on strengthening clean, ethical, and corruption-free governance at the community and departmental levels. The event continued with speeches from SMK Bario principal Robin Amir, BSSAA president Datin Pearl Masna Mohan, and Bario Sub-District administrative officer Richard Usah, representing Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) and Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, also an alumnus of SMK Bario. The programme's official launch was performed by Hasbilah, who also officiated at the opening of 'The Lentern Nook', an open reading corner established in SMK Bario. Souvenirs were presented to the school and BSSAA, followed by a Corruption-Free Pledge (Ikrar Bebas Rasuah) led by the community and witnessed by Richard. In the evening, the MACC Sarawak delegation led by Hasbilah visited the Bario Asal Longhouse upon special invitation from the BSSAA. Pearl, hailing from the longhouse community, facilitated the visit. 'The spirit of honesty and cooperation that has long been central to Kelabit culture is in line with the principles of integrity championed by MACC. 'We hope this visit will further strengthen the bond between MACC and the Bario community,' said Hasbilah in the session with the villagers. Bario MACC outreach programme

Universiti Islam Selangor to establish Integrity Unit to boost governance, fight corruption
KAJANG: Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS) is set to establish an integrity unit as part of its commitment to ensuring transparent and accountable governance, symbolising its unified stance against corruption and abuse of power. UIS Vice-Chancellor Datuk Mohd Farid Ravi Abdullah said the integrity unit would be placed under the oversight of the university's board of directors to ensure transparency in its management and anti-corruption monitoring. He said the move aligns with a recommendation by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, aimed at strengthening a culture of integrity in institutions of higher learning. "As advised by Tan Sri Azam, we will take the necessary steps to establish this integrity unit," he said after the launch of the university's Integrity Policy here today. Azam congratulated UIS for reinforcing its commitment to integrity and governance through the implementation of the policy. "There aren't many universities in the country that have taken the initiative to introduce their own integrity policy, and while UIS has yet to form its own dedicated integrity unit, this is already a positive step forward." Azam added that MACC is ready to provide advisory services and expert resources to support the initiative. "I strongly encourage UIS to establish its own integrity unit. This is essential for implementing the current policy, as I mentioned in my speech. Ideally, the implementation should be overseen by a dedicated unit," he said. Earlier, UIS held a launch ceremony for its Integrity Policy at the Dr Zainudin Jaffar Auditorium. The event also saw university staff taking part in a signing and recitation of the Corruption-Free Pledge, marking their collective commitment to fighting corruption and abuse of power.

Pahang to introduce anti-corruption systems in all govt departments
KUANTAN: To strengthen integrity and governance, the Pahang government will introduce the Corruption Risk Management (CRM) system and the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) in all state government departments. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the initiative builds on the successful implementation of these systems in state-owned companies and will be expanded to government agencies. 'These systems ensure each organisation has a robust anti-corruption framework, reducing risks of leakages and abuse of power,' he said in his speech during the signing of the state's Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) here today. The CRM system helps organisations identify and manage risks related to corruption and misconduct, while the ISO 37001 framework focuses on detecting, preventing and improving anti-corruption measures. Meanwhile, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman likened corruption to a disease, stressing the dangers of addiction and its corrosive effects on the soul. 'Corruption addiction is like drug addiction. It isn't easy to stop. But unlike drugs, corruption ends when an individual loses their position or power,' he said at the event. Azmi also compared corruption to cancer, warning that it destroys individuals, families and communities if left unchecked. 'As long as we hold power and influence, we remain at risk of corruption,' he added.
