Is Tia Mowry a Single Mom? The Divorced Parent Responds to Backlash Over the Term
Recently, Tia Mowry typed a note to herself on her phone that read: 'Why do I get backlash for calling myself a single mom?' Mowry shared a screenshot of message in a candid Instagram carousel addressing the criticism she's received for using the term since splitting from her husband of 14 years, actor Cory Hardrict in 2022. The former couple share son, Cree, 14, and daughter, Cairo, 7. In her post, Mowry explained that being a solo parent, in her definition, doesn't mean 'doing it all alone without the father present in their kids' lives at all.' 'For me, in my household, I am SINGLE,' the 'Sister, Sister,' alum wrote. 'So I'm holding it down for everyone at home. I'm the only parent present day to day.' Reactions to Mowry's take were mixed, with some supporting her perspective and others arguing that the phrase should be reserved for women raising children entirely on their own. 'I'm a single woman, who co-parents. I reserve the term 'single mom' for someone who is without assistance,' one person commented. 'Single mom has generally meant a woman raising kids without a partner.' 'Validating!' 'If you file taxes as single, then you are a single parent — period' 'I think it's better to say you're a single woman, co-parenting." 'You are a single woman!!!!!' 'You are in fact, a single mom. Full stop.' 'A single mom is a woman who is raising her children in a single parent household. Just because she co parents doesn't make her any less of a single mom.' Stacie Martin, founder of Single Parent Advocate, highlights that experiences of single parenting can vary greatly. She shares that her ex was never involved in their children's lives. While acknowledging that parents with absent co-parents face different challenges than someone like Mowry, Martin emphasizes the importance of respecting each person's unique situation. 'Parenting for you might be hard because of a different set of factors than it was for me,' Martin tells 'But that doesn't make you any less of a single mom. We all face time contrasts and challenges when balancing our duties as single parents.' That's exactly the point Mowry was trying to make. 'What I want you to take from this: Being a single mom isn't one way or one story,' she concluded. 'There are so many nuances.' This article was originally published on Solve the daily Crossword

Tia Mowry Gets Personal About How to Overcome the 'Gut-Wrenching Feeling of Divorce'
Tia Mowry invited fans to ask her questions in a Q&A on her Instagram Stories One of the questions was about divorce, which she candidly answered Mowry finalized her divorce from Cory Hardrict in April 2023Tia Mowry is opening up about how to overcome the trials and tribulations of divorce. On Wednesday, June 25, the Tia Mowry: My Next Act star, 46, invited fans to ask her open-ended questions on her Instagram Stories. One of the questions came from a fan who asked, "Girl how the hell do I recover from this divorce? Lord help me Chile!" Mowry went through her own divorce when she announced she was splitting from Cory Hardrict after 14 years of marriage in October 2022. The exes finalized their divorce in April 2023 and share daughter Cairo, 7, and son Cree, 13. She gave her honest advice, telling the fan to "dive into doing the work," and "really, truly focus on self-care." "Focus on what makes you happy and what brings you joy. Build a tribe, a community of friends, a support system. Meditate. Try new hobbies. Read books on healing," she said. The Sister, Sister alum advised her fans to "spend time with your kids if you have them, or just surround yourself with people who genuinely love and support you." "Do things that feel fun and fulfilling. Travel, if you can. Traveling really helped me. It's all about creating new experiences," she said. "The more experiences you have, the further away you get from that heavy, gut-wrenching feeling of divorce." Her last piece of advice was something Mowry has previously spoken about. "Also, allow yourself to cry. Allow yourself to feel it all. Just don't let it consume you," she said. "I hope that helps." Last October, Mowry told PEOPLE that she allows herself to be vulnerable in front of her daughter. 'The thing is as a mother, you kind of try to figure out if you should allow them to see your emotions, your ups and your downs," she said. "And I've made the choice to move from an authentic place. And allow [Cairo] to see that there are days when Mommy is sad. And that's okay." She said that she gives both Cairo and Cree "that space to express and just to be authentic." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "And it's not about covering up, you know, things," continued Mowry. "And I think when you move in authenticity, there's healing, there's growth — and I've allowed my children to do that as well."
