Truist Park, Cobb County prepare for MLB All-Star Game and fans
Nearly 100,000 people will be in metro Atlanta this weekend. For the first time in a quarter century, the Atlanta braves are getting ready to host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The All-Star game is Tuesday. That's the main event. Advertisement But the first fan event starts Friday, a block party at The Battery that starts at 11 a.m. A welcome event at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport starts at noon. Channel 2's Courtney Francisco saw crews bringing in gear all around the first base gate Wednesday afternoon. A team has been working for years to plan this event. A special chef is preparing a unique menu for fans. There will be a series of events all over metro Atlanta, leading up to the All-Star Game, from Georgia Tech near the old Turner Field to the Cobb Galleria. Advertisement Crowds will need security, so you'll notice an increase in local, state and federal officers on the ground with various operational centers around The Battery. Firefighters and paramedics will be here to help anyone with any health issues. Many people moving around and events each day means traffic delays. So the director of Cobb County's Department of Transportation spoke about managing that. 'We will have staff on sight monitoring traffic conditions making adjustments in real time as well as traffic control crews that are able to be out, boots on the ground, and make modifications to the roadways as needed as we go,' said Drew Raessler, Cobb County Department of Transportation. DeKalb County police investigating shooting at public park
Gunfire interrupted game time at a DeKalb County park on Monday night. Police set up crime tape and detectives collected evidence after a shooting in a parking lot near Wade Walker Park's playground. Police said a young man was shot just before 7:15 p.m. They said he was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. They did not release his name. The park where the shooting happened is large. It's behind a YMCA off Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The shooting happened in one of the parking lots furthest from the YMCA building. Channel 2's Courtney Francisco spoke with people at the park who wanted to remain anonymous. They said the shooting makes them think twice about bringing their family to the park. 'My friends too, I don't want them to be hit too. Like, where are the bullets coming?' one man said. Police have not made any arrests connected to this shooting. Johns Creek police looking for person seen on video trying to open car doors
Families in a Johns Creek neighborhood are sharing surveillance video that shows a person they say is trying to break into cars. Surveillance video footage shows a person with their hoodie up and the bottom half of their face covered with a mask, walking into driveways and checking to see if vehicles are unlocked. Another video shows the same person trying to open the door of another car. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'Make sure that people understand that some of the things they took a relaxed attitude in the past, they need to be a little more safety-conscious now,' George Miller, who lives in Abberley Township, told Channel 2's Courtney Francisco. 'Make sure your doors are locked, make sure your cars are locked, make sure there aren't any valuables in your vehicles. The other thing I would recommend - get security cameras.' Police said the suspect is wanted for breaking into two vehicles and attempting to break into two others. College Park neighbors have until June to find somewhere to live after apartments condemned
The City of College Park is extending the timeline for renters of a dilapidated apartment complex to get out. Chelsea Gardens Apartments on Godby Road is in such disrepair that code enforcement inspectors have deemed it unfit for people to live in. But renters told Channel 2's Courtney Francisco they do not have extra money to move. 'It's hard. It's just really hard,' said Jackie McQuery. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] She said last month, the new owner of their apartment complex, Pretas Dedvukaj, sent notices to vacate within 60 days for renovation and repairs. Neighbors said they paid April rent while house hunting and coming up with the cash to move. All the while, they endured water and electric outages due to demolitions. They took their concerns to the city council on Monday. The next day, the city manager responded with a letter giving residents eight days to move. The notice cited significant safety concerns, vermin infestations, unresolved structural issues, leaking sewage and other health hazards. 'The only person being held accountable is the residents,' said Ngaya Sway. He was part of a team of advocates with renters outside city hall Wednesday night who demanded the city hold the landlord accountable. TRENDING STORIES: STORY 1 STORY 2 STORY 3 A city spokesperson, Antoinette Govan, said code enforcement tried to hold the landlord accountable, but the owner ignored citations and then sold the property last month. Records show the city cited the owner in October for violations, giving the company until November to fix the problems or face condemnation. Govan said the current owner has done some work and helped tenants find other places to live. She said some elected officials are trying to connect residents with non-profits that can provide financial assistance. 'We heard their pain and the challenges that they face,' said Govan. Govan said Wednesday, the city agreed to give them until June 1 to move out. 'We hope this extension will give them some type of hope and understanding that we are working on their behalf,' said Govan. Neighbors said now they want their security deposits back. 'It's hard to call and get the truth,' said McQuery. Channel 2 Action News is waiting for a response from Dedvukaj. Group of Atlanta students were visiting FSU during campus shooting
A group of tenth graders from an Atlanta charter school was on Florida State University's campus when shots were fired on Thursday. Drew Charter School confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that a group of students were on a college visit when the university activated its Active Shooter lockdown. The students sheltered in place. Everyone associated with Drew Charter School was accounted for and safe throughout the incident. The students, staff and chaperones will return to Atlanta on Thursday evening. "Let us remain Drew strong as we uplift those from our Drew community currently in Florida. We are keeping them at the center of our thoughts at this time. Our hearts also go out to all of those on FSU's campus impacted by this situation," the school wrote in a statement. Channel 2's Courtney Francisco will have more from Drew Charter School during Channel 2 Action News at 6 p.m. and WSB Tonight at 11 p.m. Georgia Tech's softball team was on the way to Tallahassee for a series against FSU. Officials with Georgia Tech confirmed the team was not on campus when shots were fired. Multiple people were hospitalized after the shooting. The extent of their injuries is unclear.
