2 jailed under Pocso Act in Meghalaya
Shillong: Two persons in the East Jaintia Hills district, Khliehriat, have been sent to jail under sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for involvement in separate cases of offences against minors. "A case vide Khliehriat Women Police Station under the Pocso Act was registered and investigation was entrusted to WP lnspector O. Tyngkan. The investigation was done meticulously, and charge sheeted vide. CS No.3212021 dated 06.10.2021," a statement issued by the East Jaintia Hills SP said on Tuesday. "On completion of trial, the Hon'ble Court of Smti. B. Khriam, Special Judge (Pocso), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat found accused Peitlang Bamon guilty of committing an offence against minor and sentenced him for a period of four and three years imprisonment for an offence punishable under sections 8 & 12 of Pocso Act along with fine of Rs 20,000 each of section only. In default of payment, he will serve an additional one month simple imprisonment," the police statement said. A compensation of Rs 1, 50, 000 is to be paid to the minor survivor, the statement added. In a separate case under the Pocso Act, registered with the Khliehriat Police Station, investigation was entrusted with SI DD Warjri, and on completion of the probe, the Court of Special Judge (Pocso), East Jaintia Hills District, B Khriam, found the accused Shambhu Ray guilty of committing an offence against a minor, the statement said. The Pocso court sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment for an offence punishable under Section 77 Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act with fine of Rs 30, 000, the police said.

Plea to summon MLA in 2022 case dismissed
Varanasi: Court of Special Judge (Gangster Act) on Thursday dismissed petition of former MP Dhananjay Singh to summon Gosaiganj MLA Abhay Singh as Gangster Act accused in 2002 case of attack on him. The court scheduled next date for arguments on Jul 8. On Oct 4, 2002, former MP and then BSP MLA from Rari assembly seat in Jaunpur, Dhananjay Singh, was returning to Jaunpur with his associates in an SUV after visiting a patient. They were passing through the Nadesar area under Cantt police station when Abhay Singh and his accomplices allegedly fired at Dhananjay's vehicle. Apart from Dhananjay, his gunner, driver and others suffered injuries. Firing in the busy market led to chaos in the area. After rushing the injured persons to the hospital, Cantt police lodged FIR on complaint of Dhananjay while the assailants fled the scene.

Jammu and Kashmir: Two town drainage officials, contractor chargesheeted for graft
Representative image JAMMU: Jammu & Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has filed a chargesheet against two erstwhile officials and a contractor for misappropriation of drainage funds. In a statement late Saturday, ACB said a chargesheet was produced before the Court of Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Doda, against the accused for causing a loss to the tune of Rs 9.95 lakh to the government exchequer. Subash Chander, then assistant executive engineer in Town Drainage Division, Jammu; Kuldeep Kumar Koul, then junior engineer; and contractor Mansoor Ahmed of Doda district are accused of allowing execution of poor quality, substandard and under specification work at Kutan Nallah Thathri, Doda, through "abuse and misuse of their official position and in league with contractor".

Odisha govt engineer held on retirement day for amassing assets, disproportionate to income
An Odisha government engineer was arrested on the last day of his service on Saturday for allegedly amassing assets, disproportionate to his income, the state vigilance said. He was apprehended a day after Rs 2.56 crore in cash was recovered and several immovable assets were detected during search operations on the premises linked to the engineer, an official said. "Vigilance sleuths arrested Baikuntha Nath Sarangi , Chief Engineer, Plan Roads, RW (Rural Works) Department," he said. Sarangi, who was scheduled to retire from 34 years of service in the state government as an engineer on May 31, was booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 , the official said. The engineer would be produced before the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul, he said. Live Events The anti-corruption wing of the Odisha Police raided seven places linked to Sarangi on Friday. When a team of vigilance sleuths reached his residence, he had attempted to dispose of the bundles of Rs 500 notes by throwing them out of the window of his flat in Bhubaneswar, the official said. The engineer was found in possession of assets, including over Rs 2.56 crore in cash, two multi-storeyed buildings, two flats, seven high-value plots, bank deposits worth Rs 1.5 crore, investment in shares, mutual fund and insurance worth Rs 2.7 crore, gold of over 1.141 kilograms, 15 imported wrist watches and others. "These assets are disproportionate to his known source of income as he could not produce satisfactory documents to prove the source of cash and valuables," an official said, adding that the investigation is underway. The cash recovery from Sarangi's places was considered the third biggest seizure by the Odisha Vigilance . The highest cash seizure of Rs 3.41 crore was made from the house of a former assistant engineer of the minor irrigation division in Ganjam district in 2022. Over Rs 3.12 crore was recovered from the house of a former additional sub-collector, Nabarangpur, in 2023, sources in the vigilance said.
