Real Madrid seal contract renewal breaking age policy
Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement with veteran goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to renew his contract. The Belgian shot-stopper remains one of the most crucial players in the Real Madrid squad, still providing important saves for Los Blancos. That much was evident during the Club World Cup, when Courtois halted a late Borussia Dortmund comeback with a brilliant save in stoppage time to secure their passage to the semi-finals. Even if he was powerless to prevent Paris Saint-Germain running riot, Courtois still made a number of strong saves to prevent the scoreline becoming even more one-sided. Real Madrid agree renewal with Courtois According to both Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto have both reported that a deal has been reached for Courtois to remain at the club until 2027. The two parties have been in conversation for several months, and Los Blancos still see the 33-year-old as the answer for several more years yet, despite his increasing number of injuries. Image via AFP There had been some suggestion that they could move for new Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who could have been his successor, but Real Madrid are not willing to move on from Courtois just yet, nor did back-up Andriy Lunin have a clear exit route. Real Madrid break contract policy Over much of the last decade, Real Madrid have instituted a policy that players over thirty only receive one-year contract renewals that are addressed in the final year of their deal. Courtois' current deal runs until 2026, meaning it will be a two-year commitment and an exception to the rule. The club feel that not being an outfield player, his legs are less of an issue to consider due to age, but beyond that, Courtois' extraordinary level remains up there with the best in the game. Even so, it remains significant, given Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were subject to the same policy.

Courtois: Hakimi Punished Us
Achraf Hakimi reminded Real Madrid precisely what they let go. The Moroccan full-back was electric as Paris Saint-Germain exposed a brittle Madrid side in a semi-final that felt over within 20 minutes. Two early goals – the first involving Raul Asencio, the second featuring a misstep from Antonio Rüdiger – handed PSG the advantage. From there, it was Hakimi's stage. Stretching Madrid's right flank like elastic, he carved open spaces, forced errors, and never stopped running. Even Thibaut Courtois, rarely one for finger-pointing, admitted the damage was self-inflicted – and partly due to the freedom afforded to PSG's No.2. 'When I watch the game again,' Courtois said post-match, 'I see we gave Hakimi too much space. We weren't pressing well as a unit, and that hurt us.' Madrid's press, usually suffocating, was sluggish. Hakimi exploited it with glee, popping up behind lines, dragging defenders wide, and linking neatly with Ousmane Dembélé, who received warm praise from Courtois too. 'I told him after the game that he presses too much. It gives you no time to think,' said the Belgian keeper. 'We need to press better together. Today, it just wasn't there.' While PSG dazzled, Madrid looked dazed. 'We were a bit off the pace,' Courtois admitted. 'At speed, they beat you. When you're spread out on the pitch with so much space, against a team like them, it's difficult.' The Moroccan full-back, once of this very Madrid setup, was instrumental in the chaos with his technical brilliance, and timely overlapping runs. Tags: Achraf HakimiCourtoisPSGReal Madrid

Courtois lashes out at 'late' team-mates after Real Madrid humiliated by PSG
Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid were destroyed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup and Thibaut Courtois held nothing back in criticising his team-mates Thibaut Courtois pulled no punches after Real Madrid were crushed by Paris Saint-Germain in their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, with the goalkeeper claiming: 'We were late to every situation.' Outspoken goalkeeper Courtois said sorry to Real fans after Champions League winners PSG humbled them 4-0 at New Jersey's Met Life Stadium. A first-half brace from Fabian Ruiz either side of Ousmane Dembele's latest goal put the French side in complete control before sub Goncalo Ramos added icing on the cake late on. And it left Xabi Alonso stunned under the searing US sun with the new Real head coach already facing a postmortem before he takes charge of a La Liga game. Real were without new signings Dean Huijsen, through suspension, and injured Trent Alexander-Arnold but a still strong team were entirely outclassed by freewheeling PSG. Courtois, however, made it clear that the players simply failed to follow their boss' gameplan because they did not press PSG as a collective and early errors left them with an insurmountable mountain to climb. 'We want to apologise to the fans,' Courtois said. 'What was the problem? We didn't press as a team. There were two big mistakes at the start of the game and that affected us. 'We failed to follow Xabi's plan for the game. We need to take time and analyse it, but from what I saw, we were always arriving late to every situation.' PSG now face Chelsea in Sunday's final with the winners banking £97m for a month's work. Luis Enrique's team are odds-on favourites to prevail over Enzo Maresca's side. And after the Real thrashing PSG boss Enrique said: 'I think we started the game very well and we are very happy with the performance. With those conditions it's tough but we are in a special moment in a special season. 'We are going to try and win the final. We just have to take one more step against a good team like Chelsea but we are almost there and we want to make history for our club.'

Paris St Germain set up final against Chelsea by brushing aside Real Madrid
European champions Paris St Germain produced a blistering performance to power into the Club World Cup final with a 4-0 rout of Real Madrid. A one-sided semi-final in New York on Wednesday was effectively settled inside the opening 24 minutes as Fabian Ruiz struck twice either side of an Ousmane Dembele effort. Spanish giants Real had no answer to the rampant Champions League winners, who added a fourth goal at the MetLife Stadium late on through Goncalo Ramos. PSG – who will play Chelsea in Sunday's final – were every bit as hot as the temperature, which reached 32C during the game. Luis Enrique named a side featuring 10 of the players that started the Champions League final hammering of Inter Milan including, for the first time in the tournament, Dembele. They seemed every bit as determined to reprise that famous victory as they tore into Europe's most storied team, who were without Trent Alexander-Arnold through injury. Real had sensed the need to make a quick start and Aurelien Tchouameni had a shot deflected wide after flicks from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe sparked an early attack but PSG were quickly into their stride. It took just six minutes for them to take the lead but already by then Kvicha Kvaratskhelia had gone close and Thibaut Courtois had saved from Ruiz and Dembele. The opener came after Raul Asencio dithered in front of goal and Dembele seized possession. It seemed he may have been brought down by Courtois but it did not matter as the ball rolled to Ruiz and the Spain international tucked home. Dembele doubled the lead just three minutes later, this time after a miskick by Antonio Rudiger allowed him to race through on goal. He gave Courtois no chance with a low finish. Real found no response and PSG made it 3-0 after 24 minutes as Achraf Hakimi played in Ruiz and he wrong-footed Federico Valverde before slotting past Courtois. It could have been more before the break as Kvaratskhelia put an opportunity wide and Courtois clawed away another effort from Dembele. Desire Doue put the ball in the net after the restart but was flagged offside. Real finally began to apply some pressure as the second half wore on with PSG easing off the gas. Yet they could find no way through a well-organised defence and Mbappe, making his first start of the competition against his former side, fired one effort into the crowd. Substitute Ramos wrapped up the scoring with three minutes remaining, turning to fire home from a Bradley Barcola lay-off after Real had failed to combat a quick counter-attack.
