Kirk Cousins on Falcons drafting Penix: 'I had no reason to leave Minnesota'

In an episode of Netflix's 'Quarterback' series, Cousins discussed his frustration with the Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr. Season 2 of Netflix's "Quarterback" series was released on Tuesday, and it's definitely worth a watch if you're an Atlanta Falcons fan. The show follows three quarterbacks -- Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff and Joe Burrow -- throughout the ups and downs of the 2024 NFL season. While Goff and Burrow both had great seasons for their respective teams, Cousins had a year that he'd probably like to forget. After spending six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in free agency. One month later, the veteran quarterback was shocked to see Atlanta draft Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Apparently, Cousins had no idea the team planned to select a quarterback. The show provided some insight into how it all went down, with the veteran QB giving his honest reaction to the news. "It felt like I had been a little bit misled or certainly if I had had the information around free agency, it would have affected my decision," said Cousins. "I had no reason to leave Minnesota, as much as we loved it there, if both teams were drafting a quarterback high." While this is certainly a fair point and likely would have altered Cousins' decision in free agency, nobody made him leave Minnesota. The Vikings attempted to re-sign Cousins but reportedly weren't willing to offer him a fourth year. Plus, the fact that Minnesota had planned to draft a quarterback made Cousins feel it was time to move on. However, the Falcons fell in love with Penix during the pre-draft process, and when he was available at pick No. 8, they didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. Cousins' reaction was understandable, and many veteran quarterbacks would have felt the same way. With that said, Atlanta had every right to do what was best for the team. Even if the move alienated Cousins, the team guaranteed him $100 million. Most players never sniff that kind of money in their NFL careers. Plus, Cousins made that much for just 14 games of work last season. This is why the Falcons aren't in a rush to do Cousins any favors, such as outright releasing him just so he can play elsewhere in 2025. The Falcons were heavily criticized at the time for drafting Penix, but it proved to be the right move as Cousins' play was wildly inconsistent. After leading the team to a 6-3 start, Cousins had the worst four-game stretch of his career, passing for one touchdown and eight interceptions while losing all four games. Despite leading the team to a win over the lowly Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15, the Falcons benched Cousins and went to Penix for the final three games. The former Washington standout showed a ton of promise and will go enter the season as the undisputed starter at quarterback. Cousins' contract has made him tough to trade, and the lack of a market for quarterbacks has limited his potential options. For now, the Falcons seem content keeping Cousins on the roster to back up Penix. - Make sure to check out our latest Falcons 53-man roster projection for the 2025 NFL season.

Netflix's 'Quarterback' follows Kirk Cousins through Falcons QB controversy

Kirk Cousins reacts to the Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr. in the new preview for Season 2 of Netflix's 'Quarterback' series JOE BURROWKIRK COUSINSJARED GOFFQuarterback Season 2 premieres July 8. As Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins prepares for his second season in Atlanta, the circumstances surrounding his job have changed drastically. One year after signing a four-year, $180 million contract, Cousins is set to serve as the NFL's highest-paid backup quarterback. Last season, the 36-year-old led the Falcons to a 6-3 start before playing arguably the worst five-game stretch of his NFL career. Atlanta benched the veteran QB for rookie Michael Penix Jr. in Week 16, and the offense immediately showed signs of life. Cousins' roller-coaster year will be featured on Season 2 of Netflix's "Quarterback." The documentary-style series follows Cousins, Lions quarterback Jared Goff and Bengals QB Joe Burrow during the ups and downs of the 2024 season. While we don't know just how much of the Falcons' quarterback controversy will be shown, we can see Cousins' reaction to the team selecting Penix in the latest preview for Season 2 (see below). WATCH: Quarterback Season 2 trailer Since the team spent a top-10 pick on Penix, there was simply no going back to Cousins, even with his $40 million cap hit in 2025. The trade market for Cousins has been mostly non-existent due to his contract, but that's likely to change at some point during the season. Season 2 of "Quarterback" premieres July 8 on Netflix. It will be Cousins' second time appearing on the show. He appeared on Season 1, along with former Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota and Chiefs Patrick Mahomes.

Former NBA all-star banned from Puerto Rican team after wild brawl with fans

Demarcus Cousins had his contract terminated by his team in Puerto Rico after being suspended by the league for the remainder of the season for his role in an ugly scene involving fans earlier this week. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional league (BSN) made the announcement on Tuesday after Cousins was ejected from a game on Monday, during which the four-time NBA all-star made contact with multiple fans. In a clip that went viral on social media, Cousins — who plays for the Mets de Guaynabo in the BSN — was seen approaching a fan sitting courtside who was gesturing a crying motion towards the big man. Cousins responded by grabbing his genitals toward the fan and then flipping him off. When the fan tried to move Cousins' arm from in front of his face, which led to a heated exchange and one of Cousins' teammates getting in between him and the fan. Cousins also appeared to cock his fist to threaten another fan who had stood up during the commotion. It didn't end there, though. As the former NBA star was forcibly removed from the floor, he engaged with more fans near the tunnel to the locker room — including grabbing one by the arm. Several drinks were thrown in Cousins' direction as security struggled to get the irate player into the tunnel. According to the New York Post, BSN officials announced that Cousins has been fined $4,250 US – which could be increased to $10,000 — for a disqualifying foul, a technical foul and actions deemed to incite or provoke others. Former NBA Star's On-Court Encounter With Fans Ends With Police Involved

Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins found himself at the center of an altercation with fans that evoked memories of the so-called "Malice at the Palace" that occurred more than 25 years ago. The incident went down Monday during a Puerto Rico basketball league game. Cousins, 34, is playing with the Guaynabo Mets. At some point in the fourth quarter, the former Sacramento Kings center got into a verbal altercation with a fan sitting courtside. The fan was gesturing "cry baby" at Cousins, who clearly took offense. Cousins grabbed his crotch, prompting the fan to flip him the bird. Cousins pushed the fan's hands down, and that's when the altercation turned physical, as more fans rushed in to the fan's aid and Cousins' teammates stepped in to prevent things from getting even more out of control. The former University of Kentucky star ultimately was ejected from the game, but he didn't leave quietly. As he was being escorted by security and police, Cousins got into another skirmish with fans, who threw drinks at the agitated center. Police and security had to physically restrain Cousins and some fans, too. Cousins last played in the NBA in the 2021-22 season. He was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Kings. He averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game over the course of 11 seasons. He first joined the Mets in 2023 before briefly played in Taiwan and Mongolia. He returned to the Mets this season. Cousins' altercation with fans reminded basketball fans of the infamous November 2004 incident at The Palace of Auburn Hills, where members of the Indiana Pacers -- primarily a then-known Ron Artest -- got into a melee with Detroit Pistons fans. The violent brawl led to numerous suspensions and it forever left a stain on the NBA. Ye Disses Cam'ron For Saying He Put A 'Stain' On Chicago, And Cam Responds Exactly How You Think He Would

Cam'ron has responded to Ye taking aim at him due to the Harlem rhymer claiming the Chicago artist has put a 'stain' on his hometown with his antics. After Cam's initial remarks that both Ye and incarcerated R&B star R. Kelly put 'a stain on a good city' with their behavior, Ye replied with a since-deleted X/Twitter post, where he first claimed to 'love' his former label mate before saying he almost didn't release new song 'COUSINS' due to people like the Purple Haze rhymer potentially making fun of him. The song highlights West's claim of having an incestuous relationship with his male cousin as a kid. 'How Cam say I'm doing anything bad for Chicago. Chicago loves me,' West posted. 'I love Cam. It's n***as like you that had me shook to release the song but I ain't scared of y'all n***as. And thank you for making dip set. You're a God. 'And f**k you by the way,' he added. 'And I got on my 2 million dollar dipset belt as I tweet.' West also addressed Cam's comments during his Parti livestream with Sneako over the weekend, where he called Cam a 'pu**y a** ni**a' for his remarks, adding, 'don't tell me sh*t about Chicago.' Cam shared his reaction on Monday's episode of his It Is What It Is podcast. Instead of responding with equal energy, the Uptown spitter laughed off Ye's shots while saying he doesn't go back and forth with anyone 'once you admit you suck d*ck,' a reference to the aforementioned 'Cousins' track, where Ye claims he performed oral sex on his male cousin until the age of 14. 'I don't usually talk to ni**as who suck d*ck, once they suck d*ck, I don't go back. I don't wanna go back-and-forth once you admit you suck d*ck. That's just me,' Cam said though chuckles. See his reaction to Ye's slights below. In addition to Cam saying West is currently making his city look crazy, the rapper also previously called out the Bully artist for his 'disgusting' remarks regarding JAY-Z and Beyoncé's children. 'I was disgusted,' Cam said at the time. 'Why are you mentioning another man's kids? That's not only out of bounds, it's desperate.'
