Salt Rock Craft Group celebrates 28 years of community building

Gloria Clarke's knitting circle has grown into a local legacy of laughter, friendship and Mandela Day giving. The Craft Group, which Gloria founded in 1997, marked the remarkable milestone of its 28th birthday with tea, cake and sandwiches at Salt Rock Library last week (June 26). For nearly three decades, the group has been a beacon of creativity, companionship and community spirit. After relocating from Benoni with her family, Gloria quickly recognised the need for a space where older residents could connect and combat the loneliness that often accompanies major life changes. What began as a small gathering soon blossomed into a vibrant community of more than 30 members by the early 2000s, prompting a move to the local library, a central and spacious venue that remains their meeting place to this day. The Craft Group is far more than a knitting circle. Members engage in a wide range of creative pursuits, from baking and gardening to jewellery-making and hosting guest speakers. Their recent project – knitting jerseys and beanies for Grade R pupils at Shakaskraal SA Primary School in honour of Mandela Day – reflects their enduring commitment to supporting underprivileged communities. 'Craft work is a dying art form,' Gloria laments, flipping through yearbooks filled with photos of members past and present. Yet despite dwindling numbers, the group continues to meet twice a month, driven by a shared love of making and meaningful connection. 'We are such a small community now, but new members are always welcome,' she smiles. 'It's more a friendship and eating club, anyway.'
