I Took Photoshop's Generative AI for a Spin. These Are the Tools That Stuck Out

Photoshop is all in on generative AI, and it wants you to give it a whirl, too. Adobe has added a number of AI features to its premiere photo editor over the past few years; if you use Photoshop regularly, you've probably seen these pop up on your task bars. I spend a lot of time reviewing AI image generators and other AI creative software, so I had to put the original photo editor's AI to the test. AI might not be right for every project, especially for professional creators who regularly use Photoshop. What I found is that there are some good tools that may help your creative workflows, but you need to spend some time initially getting to know the options. These are the tools you should start with, plus some tried-and-tested tips from my experience using Photoshop's AI. You can access the AI tools in any Photoshop file on the web and desktop apps. You can now also edit on your iPhone and Android, thanks to new mobile apps. I found it easiest to import my favorite photos from my Lightroom albums (all my projects are synced in my Creative Cloud) and then edit on my laptop's bigger screen. Editing on the go on mobile was a great backup option. The first time you try to use any of these AI tools, Adobe will make you agree to its various AI terms of service. The policy states Adobe won't train its AI models on your content, and you must agree to follow their guidelines, which prohibit things like creating abusive or illegal content. For more, read our reviews of the best AI image generators. How to create AI images using Photoshop Adobe's AI image model Firefly is available as a separate app and embedded in Photoshop, so you can use it wherever is easiest for you. If you're already creating in Photoshop, here's how to access Firefly. Open your Photoshop project. If you're using the most recent version of PS, the contextual taskbar should include an option that says Generate image. Navigate to Edit, then click Generate image. You can also click the icon that looks like an image with an arrow and sparkle in the toolbar on the left side. Enter your prompt, specify the style and upload any reference images. Click Generate. Tab through the different variations by using the arrows in the taskbar below. When you're writing your prompt, don't be afraid to add a lot of detail, and put the most important elements at the beginning. Check out our AI image prompt-writing guide for more tips to get better results. If you're not in love with the images, you can click the image pop-out window or the icon with four squares to adjust your prompt and reference images. You can tap the three vertical dots on the end of the pin bar to give feedback on the generations, remove the background, or generate similar images. If you still don't like what you've got, I recommend starting over with a new prompt rather than trying to endlessly tweak and generate, hoping to get it right. How to use generative features in Photoshop You can also use generative AI tools to edit your existing project in Photoshop. Generative fill, expand and remove are some of the most popular AI tools. Here's how to use each. Generative fill is like a miniaturized AI image generator. It's one of the most popular AI tools in Photoshop. With generative fill, you can select a specific region of your project, enter a text prompt, and it will create a new design for that area. You can find generative fill by going to Edit > Generative fill. Make sure to use the selection brush tool. Mark the area you want the elements to appear, type in your prompt and click generate. Generative expand is useful when you need more space in an image. You can create new sections of your image to seamlessly blend with your current image or you can enter a text prompt and create new scenery. You can also use it to enlarge your project. To access generative expand, select the crop tool, pull out your canvas to whatever size you want, enter a prompt if you want and click generate. I edited my original image (left) to include more sky and sand with generative expand then added AI seagulls with generative fill. Katelyn Chedraoui/CNET Generative remove is like an AI-supercharged eraser. The tool isolates and removes certain elements from your project without disrupting the entire image. There are two ways to remove objects from your work. The first is to select the object with the object select tool, click generative fill and put the word "remove" in the prompt. Otherwise you can use the remove tool (Spot healing tool > Remove tool) to manually highlight the objects you want erased. Read more: Photoshop's Perfect Blend Concept Stuns With Composite Photos Other AI tools you can try out in Photoshop Sky replacement is a cool AI tool that can add drama to your landscapes. You can create an alternative sky by navigating to Edit > Sky replacement and selecting from a variety of choices, including sunsets, blue skies and colorful options labeled "spectacular." Once you've chosen a preset you like, you can manually adjust the brightness and other elements. In this instance I used AI sky replacement to add some Carolina blue skies (right) to my original shot of Kenan Stadium (left). Katelyn Chedraoui/CNET Generate background works well for product photography or other shots where the subject or object is the focal point of the image. Upload your shot to Photoshop, click remove background from the contextual task bar (the pin box that pops up when you select the layer) and click generate background. Some of the backgrounds turn out better than others. The cityspaces I generated looked kind of fake, but colored or patterned backgrounds came out great. There are some other AI tools that may be right for you depending on your project. Neural filters can be used in more detailed photo editing, and the curvature pen can help designers make more consistent-looking arcs. We're also expecting to see more AI-powered editing tools introduced in Photoshop this year. Overall, Photoshop's AI suite performed well. Some of the tools were helpful, but you have to know what the tools are designed to be used for in order to get the best results. For example, generative expand was good for resizing photos, and I found generative remove great for erasing photobombing objects. Other tools, like the sky replacement tool, worked for some photos but not others. I won't use Photoshop's AI for every project, but I do think there might be times when it's a good option. Why Adobe's (ADBE) Steady Growth Can't Silence the Stock Bears

Adobe (ADBE) has been letting investors down for a while now. Over the past five years, the company has actually shrunk in value by around 11%. This year hasn't been much different—the stock is down nearly 14% year to date, and another 8% since it reported Q2 earnings on June 12, despite delivering a beat across the board. Confident Investing Starts Here: One of the main issues driving skepticism about Adobe's stock performance is that it is increasingly viewed as a slow-growth software company, despite its strong cash flows and dominant position in the creative software space. The AI boom has brought a wave of generative innovation that Adobe seems to be struggling to fully capitalize on. As a result, even though valuations are historically depressed, it seems unlikely that the massive premium investors were once willing to pay for Adobe will return anytime soon. With the market recognizing that, I believe there's limited upside from here, and the stock remains at high risk of trading sideways, at best. That's why I'm maintaining a Hold rating on ADBE for the time being. Adobe's Path Forward as New Creative Tools Gain Traction To begin with, Adobe has been the gold standard in the creative software industry for decades. Even though its stock price hasn't moved much in recent years, the company still holds that status today. Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, which includes its flagship products, remains an essential toolkit for any professional in the creative world. For example, in the most recent quarter (Q2), the Digital Media segment saw a 13% year-over-year growth in annual recurring revenue—practically in line with the previous quarter—with no signs of slowing down. However, while past performance has been consistent, the concern lies in what's ahead for Adobe. Competition in the creative space has intensified, particularly with the rise of AI. Many players are leveraging generative AI to offer simpler, more accessible, and often more affordable tools. For example, major tech platforms like Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Alphabet (GOOGL) have started integrating creative functionalities directly into their operating systems, reducing the need for third-party software like Adobe's. That said, Adobe isn't standing still. The company is heavily leaning into generative AI, integrating its Firefly AI models across its product ecosystem to enhance user capabilities and maintain its competitive edge. Adobe has its Firefly app for iOS and Android, which blends its own AI model with partners, and will also be available as a standalone app for $10 per month. A significant point is that the market hasn't fully convinced itself that Adobe is immune to these threats, which could limit expectations for a stronger growth path ahead. While Adobe's products remain feature-rich and the industry benchmark, many new creators are opting for simpler tools like Canva, which already holds 16 million paid users compared to Adobe Creative Cloud's 30 million. Adobe's Growth Goals and Capital Missteps Adobe's management team recently raised its early targets for FY 2025, now expecting EPS to land in the mid-$20s at around $20.6 —which would represent about 11% yearly growth—and total revenues to hit $23.5 billion, an annual increase of 9.5%. These numbers align perfectly with market expectations, as the consensus has already factored in these levels. In that sense, it suggests Adobe isn't guiding its top or bottom line very conservatively. Now, looking at the Rule of 40—a benchmark for subscription-based software companies where revenue growth plus operating margin should exceed 40%—Adobe's guidance of 9.5% revenue growth combined with a 36.7% operating margin (over the last twelve months) gives it a Rule of 40 score of 46.2. This means that even in a moderate growth phase, the company's operational strength more than makes up for slower top-line expansion. But putting revenue and earnings aside, I think Adobe still needs to shake off some negative reputation it's built over the last few years by aggressively buying back its own shares using debt, rather than allocating that capital to other uses—like paying down debt, building cash reserves, or investing in organic and inorganic growth. Over the past five years, Adobe has spent more than $30 billion on buybacks as TipRanks data shows, primarily when its shares were trading at an average of 35x earnings—all while its stock has declined by about 11% since then. So, although Adobe's balance sheet remains fundamentally solid and it has historically operated as a net cash company, the shift to a modest net debt position, in my view, signals a misstep in capital allocation. This introduces a valid counterpoint to the otherwise bullish investment thesis. A Closer Look at Adobe's Valuation Metrics Trading at 18.4x its forward earnings, Adobe's multiple is now just 6% below the sector median and 46% below its historical average over the past five years. While Adobe's nearly 7x sales multiple might seem high at first glance, it tends to be structurally elevated. This reflects the premium the SaaS model commands due to customer stickiness, subscription visibility, and scalability. However, one valuation metric I find potentially more helpful than the P/E for Adobe is the earnings yield, calculated as operating profit divided by enterprise value. This is because EV/EBIT strips away distortions from buybacks, tax strategies, and varying debt levels, focusing purely on the company's core operating performance relative to its total enterprise value. TipRanks data indicates profit margins are stable at ~25%. Using an operating profit of $8.3 billion over the last twelve months and a current enterprise value of $162.8 billion, Adobe's earnings yield comes to about 5%. Comparing this to a weighted average cost of capital (WACC) of roughly 7% and a risk-free rate (based on 10-year Treasury bonds) of 4.5% suggests that, on an operating profit basis, Adobe may not be generating returns above its cost of capital. This could imply that the stock is fairly valued or perhaps even slightly expensive. Is Adobe Stock Worth Buying? Wall Street analysts are generally more optimistic than skeptical about Adobe. Over the past three months, 20 out of 27 analysts covering the stock have given it a Buy rating, while the remaining seven have assigned a Hold rating. ADBE's average stock price target stands at $503.83, implying a potential upside of ~31% over the coming twelve months. Holding Tight as Adobe Figures it Out The market clearly isn't as confident about Adobe's fundamentals going forward as it has been in past years. The surge in competition driven by generative AI in the creative space has put some limits on Adobe's growth story. Analysts' top and bottom-line forecasts also reflect a cautious stance, expecting Adobe to deliver results broadly in line with its own conservative guidance rather than any big upside surprise. While valuation multiples look lower compared to Adobe's historical levels, the stock remains reasonably priced based on its underlying operations and performance metrics. For this reason, I would advise against a super bullish 'buy-the-dip' approach at this time. A Hold rating seems the most sensible move, as the stock may experience some further sideways trading or mild corrections before a clearer uptrend emerges.

Bernstein Hikes Adobe (ADBE) Price Target to $530 on AI Prospects

Adobe Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE) is one of the 11 must-buy AI stocks analysts are betting on. On June 16, Bernstein SocGen Group reiterated an 'Outperform' rating on the stock and hiked the price target to $530 from $525. Copyright: photogearch / 123RF Stock Photo Bernstein SocGen Group remains bullish about Adobe's outlook owing to its potential to deliver 10% revenue growth in the near term. The firm also touted the company's improving margins and significant stock buybacks, which are expected to trigger mid-teens earnings per share growth. In addition, the research firm expects the company to benefit from the acceleration of artificial intelligence. According to Bernstein, Adobe has evolved from a 'show me a story' to an 'explain to me and show me a story.' Consequently, it views the company as an AI winner in the enterprise. Nevertheless, the research firm remains cautious, awaiting clarity on its AI monetization strategy and go-to-market initiatives. Adobe Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBE) is a global technology company operating across Digital Media, Digital Experience, and Publishing & Advertising. Its Creative Cloud offers tools for content creation, while Document Cloud supports digital workflows. While we acknowledge the potential of ADBE as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
