Criminal Minds Star Shares the Trick to Pulling Off This Week's Cool Twist

The following contains spoilers from the June 5 episode of , now streaming on Paramount+. The buzzword this week on Criminal Minds: Evolution apparently was 'threesomes' — as in the one that Emily just said no to years ago, and the secret one that JJ and Dr. Ochoa surprised us with as the episode drew to a close. More from TVLine Criminal Minds Video: As JJ Seeks Help, Aimee Garcia Previews 'Intimate' Scenes With a 'Magical' A.J. Cook Casting News: Lifetime's Lucifer Reunion, Prison Break Addition and More Doctor Who: Watch Jodie Whittaker Nerd Out Over New TARDIS During Her 'Emotional' Return to Set This week's episode saw JJ (played by A.J. Cook) sit down for an unorthodox therapy session with Dr. Julia Ochoa (Aimee Garcia), after the veteran agent stepped in front of a fellow LEO's gun at a crime scene. At the close of their episode-long series of talks — which took place in a conference room at Voit's hospital — it was agreed that if JJ at this early point after Will's death is unable to help herself, maybe she can instead help 'someone else.' '…like you,' JJ said, addressing an unseen figure seated at a table to her right. 'What do you think?' It was then revealed to viewers that Voit had been observing their sessions the entire time. (And if you go back and rewatch the episode, you'll now clock both JJ and Julia at times glancing at the nearby Voit.) 'I think you might be right,' Voit said. 'From what I can remember, everything I did was selfish. Even trying to take my own life is all about me, me trying to solve my problems. I never even considered I should do something to ease someone else's suffering. Suffering that I caused.' On that note, Voit agreed to be taken to the BAU to confront one of his disciples, with the hope that, among other things, the 'reunion' might help restore the Artist Formerly Known as Sicarius' missing memories. The Voit reveal, as Aimee Garcia put it during her Wednesday afternoon chat with TVLine, was a 'great twist.' 'What was so fun about those scenes is we would ask our incredible director, 'How often do we look over at Voit without giving it away?'' recalled Garcia. 'Because this guy' — she jabbed her thumbs toward herself — 'will be going back and looking at it a second time. 'It was really fun to be a character that's 'gazing off, collecting her thoughts' when you watch it the first time,' she added, 'but when you watch it a second, [you realize JJ is] actually looking at someone that you hate but is the key to unpacking the [serial killer] network.' Garcia said that Zach Gilford was only seated on-set with her and A.J. Cook for the eventual reveal. But for every scene before that, 'We printed out a face of Zach and taped it to a stand, and carved out hollows for his eyes… A.J. and I were taking pictures with it!' On a more practical level, by using that cut-out, 'We literally had an eyeline that was Zach Gilford's face that we would reference and look at,' Garcia noted. 'That's what the show does so well,' she remarked. 'You think it's blue and it's red, you think it's two people in the scene but it's three… How often would we think that someone who has caused such mass destruction, as Voit has, that we would want to hug him?' — as JJ found herself barely doing, moments later. 'What does that say about us?' asked Garcia. 'Are bad guys all bad? Are good guys all good? Can bad guys turn good, can good guys turn bad?' On the 'bad guys turn good' front, will Voit now prove to be a useful asset for the BAU, loathe as the Special Agents are to see him navigating their work space? 'Possibly,' Garcia teased. But the lingering question will be: If a brain, like a computer hard drive, has been 'wiped clean,' do any of Voit's killer memories and 'DNA' remain embedded somewhere? 'In Voit's case, his memories are starting to come back,' Garcia previewed, 'but it's that fine balance of, 'Do you awaken a monster? Or do you, like Dr. Lewis says, let sleeping dogs lie? That's the moral quandary. We needed this serial killer to wake from a coma, and quickly before more people die, but Dr. Ochoa sees a patient that could regress if we go too hard.' Criminal Minds Video: As JJ Seeks Help, Aimee Garcia Previews ‘Intimate' Scenes With a ‘Magical' A.J. Cook

Special Agent JJ Jareau really needs help, and Dr. Julia Ochoa may be the one to give it to her. In this Thursday's episode of Paramount+s Criminal Minds: Evolution — titled 'The Brutal Man' (as in the next UnSub discovered to be under Sicarius' sway) — JJ (played by A.J. Cook) seeks out an unorthodox sit-down with Dr. Ochoa (recurring player Aimee Garcia), after putting herself in harm's way while processing the scene of a family's murder. More from TVLine Casting News: Lifetime's Lucifer Reunion, Prison Break Addition and More Shrinking Boss Bill Lawrence Tees Up Reunion With His 'Hero' Michael J. Fox, Shares Favorite Spin City Memory Brett Goldstein Reveals How His Role in Bill Lawrence-Donald Faison Pilot 'Space Turk' (?!) Led to Ted Lasso And man, JJ has a lot to say. 'I think that sometimes we share more with strangers than with friends and family, and the BAU is JJ's family,' Garcia observes in the TVLine video above. 'JJ is 'off her turf' in a very intimate setting, with this doctor that is very well-versed in trauma and pain and mental health, so it was a beautiful opportunity for this beloved character that is JJ to have someone who supports her. Like, 'Who guards the guards?' They're heroes [in the BAU]… but who carries them?' 'One of my favorite lines that [Julia] says is, 'The BAU is one of the most emotionally constipated groups of people' she has met, which I think is so funny because they see Hell on earth, they see the darkest sides of people,' Garcia notes. 'So I think that Dr. Julia Ochoa was in the right place at the right time,' overseeing Voit's care as she is. The episode marks a meaningful pivot for Garcia's character, who until now has been oh-so-serious –and, frankly, a bit of an obstacle for the BAU. 'She's a doctor, she has blinders on,' Garcia says of Ochoa's cool, calm and collected approach to Voit. 'She sees Voit as a patient, unlike the BAU who sees him as a monster. So yes, this is one of my favorite episodes because A.J. is amazing and it felt like a play, and Julia gets to actually help a member of the BAU. I feel very lucky that Julia got to help a character who always has it together. 'The hardest part was not crying when A.J. was doing her scenes, because she just rips your heart out,' Garcia adds. 'She was so vulnerable and open, it was like tennis. She made it so easy.' In venturing down this rabbit hole for one of Cook's meatiest Criminal Minds arcs ever, 'I was just there as a support system,' says Garcia. 'I said, 'Look, this is your episode, so let me know how I can be of service. I will follow your lead.' And it was so lovely. A.J. just soared. I felt like a proud sister, sitting on the other side and getting to see her magic!' Press play above for more from Garcia, including why she sought out this atypical-for-her role, the Criminal Minds cast member she had worked with once before, and whether Dr. Ochoa might become the Harley Quinn to Voit's Joker! Where is the Criminal Minds cast now? Five years on since the series ended

Criminal Minds was cancelled in 2020, but returned for a spin-off series Criminal Minds: Evolution two years later. As the series is now free to stream on Channel 5, here's everything you need to know about the beloved cast. Criminal Minds first aired in September 2005, and now nearly 20 years on the show still remains a fan favourite. The show was originally cancelled in 2020, but fans were so outraged by the decision to take it off air that it returned two years later for a spin-off show - Criminal Minds: Evolution. Created by Jeff Davis, Criminal Minds follows a team of criminal profilers who work for the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) to investigate crimes, as they anticipate the next moves of the criminals across the United States and stop them before they strike again. ‌ Each episode of the show focuses on a new case with the cast trying to bust the criminal, and explores the personal lives of various characters. ‌ There are some major cast and character changes over the years, but the much-loved OG cast members have stayed the same. With the likes of Kirsten Vangsness, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J Cook, Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and Paget Brewster. Here is everything you need to know about where the cast of Criminal Minds are now? ‌ Matthew Gray Gubler Matthew played Dr Spencer Reid and stared in season one to season 15, and he quickly became a fan favourite. Dr Reid was a genius who graduated high school at the age of 12 and had two bachelors degrees and three PHDs, as well as being a respected member of the BAU. In addition to his role in the show, he went on to appear in multiple movies - RV, (500) Days of Summer, Life after Beth and Zoe. Matthew also voiced the beloved character Simon in all four Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. ‌ A.J Cook A.J was just 27 when the show premiered in 2005 and remained as a main character until season six where she left the team to take on a job at the Pentagon, although she was actually cut from the show due to cost cutting reasons by CBS. Although she returned the following season after fans complained that they were missing her on screen as special agent Jennifer Jareau a.k.a. "JJ". ‌ Since appearing on Criminal Minds, A.J has went on to star in episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and 9-1-1 and as well as appearing on films such as Least Among Saints and Mother's Day. She has two children with her husband Nathan Andersen, alongside her two sons who play her children in the show, she returned for the spin-off show Criminal Minds: Evolution. Kirsten Vangsness ‌ Kirsten played the eccentric tech analyst and communications liaison Penelope Garcia, and appeared on the show throughout all 15 seasons. She was highly loved by fans for her hilarious comedic timing along with her flirtation with Derek Morgan, who was played by Shemar Moor. She is currently staring in the Paramount+ revival of Criminal Minds: Evolution, as well as appearing in The Chicago 8 and Kill Me, Deadly series. Thomas Gibson ‌ Thomas played the troubled Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner on the show from season 1 to 12, but was eventually fired from the show due to an physical altercation on set. Back in 2010, the now 62-year-old was accused of shoving the assistant director on set but was permitted to remain on the show after completing anger management classes. However, in 2016, during the show's twelfth season, he was dismissed after kicking a co-executive producer in the shin during a heated confrontation. ‌ Joe Mantegna Joe joined the cast during season 3 of the show, and quickly became a fan favourite with his character David Rossi becoming a father like figure among the group of FBI agents. The Tony Award winning actor took to X (formally known as Twitter) after filming his final scene for the show in 2019, writing: "I will miss playing David Rossi, and I'll miss the wonderful writing that brought him to life, but mostly I will miss seeing my fellow cast mates and our fantastic crew every day. It may seem a cliché to say we're like family, but it's so very true." ‌ He went on to star in As We See It and he continues to voice the character Fat Tony in The Simpsons, a role which he has had since 1991. Joe has also returned for the spin-off series along with his other cast member - AJ and Kirsten . ‌ Paget Brewster Paget's character Emily Prentiss had multiple exit's and reappearance's throughout her time on Criminal Minds. Although she finally returned in season 12 and stayed as a regular through to the final season of the show. Paget is a well known voice actress outside of her role in Criminal Minds, voicing characters in American Dad!, Adventure Time, Family Guy, DuckTales and Birdgirl. ‌ She also rejoined the serious for the spinoff show. Shemar Moore Shemar's character Derek Morgan was known as a heartthrob in the show, he appeared in season 1 through to 11 as a set character and continued appearing as a guest throughout seasons 12 and 13. He went on to voice the DC Comics character Cyborg in the Justice League animated movies, as well as staring in S.W.A.T and returning to The Young and the Restless - the soap that launched his career and earned him an Emmy Award back in 2000.
