Armed 64-year-old woman blocks Texas highway in lawn chair during standoff: Officials
A Texas highway was shut down Thursday for several hours after a 64-year-old woman involved in a crash pulled out a gun and a lawn chair and sat in one of the lanes, sparking an hourslong standoff, authorities said Thursday. The incident -- which unfolded on Interstate 45 in the Spring area, north of Houston -- "ended peacefully," authorities said when the woman surrendered. No one was hurt in the incident. "We saved a life," said Maj. Cedrick Collier, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, during a news conference Thursday evening. "The good thing is someone's mother and grandmother is coming home tonight." During the standoff, the woman, who has a history of mental illness, had a revolver in her hand, which she kept pointing at her head, Collier said. Crisis negotiators were called in to talk her through the situation and were even able to build a rapport with the woman, Collier said. The woman's daughter also arrived to the scene and was able to speak to her mother. The incident began unfolding after the woman appears to have intentionally crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler in the southbound lanes of the interstate, Collier said. No one was hurt in the crash either, he said. MORE: 5 killed after train hits vehicle that allegedly attempted to go around crossing gate During the ordeal, the Harris County Constable's Office, released photos showing the woman sitting in a lawn chair in the middle of the highway and the large police response. "The suspect refuses to comply with verbal commands and is refusing to drop the weapon," the constable's office said earlier in the day. Emergency crews shut down the north- and southbound lanes of the highway amid the response, and traffic was diverted off the highway, which has since reopened. Death inquest for man fatally shot by police near Moose Jaw to begin
An RCMP officer blocks traffic on Highway 1 near Belle Plaine on July 12, 2022. An inquest date has been set for the death of Ryan Booker, who was shot dead by police following a standoff. A death inquest for a 26-year-old man who was fatally shot by police in 2022 near Moose Jaw following a pursuit on Highway 1 is scheduled to begin on Monday. The inquest for Ryan Booker will be held at the Royal Hotel in Regina from June 23 - June 26. The province said the coroner's inquest is to determine who died, when and where, and the medical cause and manner of death. Recommendations from the coroner's jury may also be provided in an effort to prevent similar deaths in the future. The incident that led to Booker's death occurred during the early morning hours of July 17, 2022, when a man was spotted with a gun and was allegedly uttering threats in a parking lot in Moose Jaw. Police responded to the scene, but the suspect fled which led to a pursuit on Highway 1 ending near Belle Plaine when the suspect pulled over, leading to a six-hour standoff with officers. Crisis negotiators responded to the scene, but the situation dramatically escalated and around 7 a.m., Booker was fatally shot by police after pointing a gun at officers and not responding to commands. He received medical attention at the scene but was pronounced dead soon after. After the incident, Moose Jaw police and Saskatchewan RCMP requested to have Saskatoon police conduct an independent investigation. -With files from David Prisciak

Man, 36, charged after nearly 10-hour police standoff at Disraeli Bridge
A man who police say was at large violating a parole order is facing a number of charges after a standoff with officers at the Disraeli Bridge that lasted nearly 10 hours on Saturday. Winnipeg police were called to Grove Street off Euclid Avenue after reports of gunshots around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Const. Dani McKinnon told reporters at a news conference on Sunday that police later learned a man had a prior dispute with residents at a home. He returned armed and fired shots at the house, police said in a Sunday news release with more details about the incident. While there was property damage, no one was injured, McKinnon said. The armed man then ran to the Disraeli Bridge near Sutherland Avenue where he hunkered down underneath, police say. Officers tried to get the man to rescind the firearm, but he initially refused. Police secured the area, blocking access to vehicles, pedestrians and boats for hours, while a team of crisis negotiators talked to the man. "He was in distress," McKinnon said. "For somebody to be armed and not able to come to a resolution sooner than later there's obviously some difficulties occurring." The police standoff almost hit the 10-hour mark under hot and sunny conditions. McKinnon said a person was taken into custody at around 3:22 p.m. "It was a long, tense scenario for the entire community, for the police, for the person involved, the families of all the residents in the area," McKinnon said. A 36-year-old man who was at large and violating parole has been charged with several counts including possession of a weapon and discharge of a firearm in a reckless manner.

Officers shoot chainsaw-wielding man in Twin Cities, police say
Police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, say officers shot a man wielding a chainsaw overnight Thursday amid a domestic disturbance call. It happened on the 3200 block of 63rd Avenue North, according to police, after officers were called to the scene on a report of someone inside a residence "armed with knives." Police say crisis negotiators were called in to assist before officers told the suspect he was going to be arrested. Police say the man then walked out of the home with a chainsaw. "While trying to arrest and control the male, officers used pepper balls, 40 mm less lethal, and ultimately Brooklyn Center Police Officers discharged their firearms striking the male," police said in a statement released early Thursday morning. Police say the man was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition. The officers involved are now on critical incident leave as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates. Police also say "multiple area police agencies" assisted them at the scene. This story will be updated.
