Footy star slams 'sick' fashion trend among young Aussie women after surviving potentially deadly health scare
One of Australian sport's most admired dual-code athletes has issued a blunt and emotional warning to young women following a frightening diagnosis that could have taken a very different turn. Australian and New South Wales rugby league star Emma Verran [née Tonegato], now with Cronulla Sharks, discovered melanoma during a routine check at a community screening event. Sharing her story in a candid Instagram video captioned 'Everyone go get your skin checkedddddd please.' Verran explained that a seemingly minor mole on her back turned out to be anything but, with subsequent testing confirming it was melanoma - one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of skin cancer. 'I don't normally do videos like this, but I just had a bit of a story to share,' she said,. She shared the moment a foundation nurse suggested she get it looked at more closely, prompting a chain of events that may well have saved her life. Three days after the biopsy, while in Origin camp, Verran was told she had melanoma and needed urgent surgery. Despite the urgency of the diagnosis, Verran initially resisted immediate surgery, telling her doctor, 'I'm in Origin camp,' only for the doctor to respond firmly, 'This is really important'. That sparked a negotiation that saw the surgery delayed until after the series. Verran now realises how lucky she was that her instinct to check the harmless-looking mole likely saved her life. Verran urged regular skin checks and slammed tanning trends, calling the normalisation of unprotected sun exposure 'sick.' 'I see all the tan line trends and stuff and it just makes me feel a bit sick, to be honest. Even friends of mine who don't wear sunscreen - they're literally so silly,' she told News Corp. For Verran, the bronzed-skin trend is dangerous, with melanoma now the top cancer in Aussies aged 20–39. Her concern is personal - despite her mum's warnings, Verran admits she once prioritised looking tanned over sun safety. 'I used to hate fake tan, I used to think it looked gross,' she said. 'Whereas now I'm all for it. I had a couple of years where I probably just wanted to be brown, to be tan, and now I know it's so important to stay in the shade, sit under an umbrella, and wear sunscreen.' Even sunscreen hasn't always been easy for her - she has a sensitivity to a common ingredient found in most commercial formulas, so she relies on mineral-based options instead. But she has learned that finding alternatives is far better than ignoring the issue altogether. Her calm, composed video reached thousands, with fans thanking her and sharing their own skin cancer experiences. 'Great message, had the same thing happen to me earlier this year,' one follower wrote. Another added, 'Great reminder for the rest of us - thank you for sharing and good luck for your next appointments.' Others praised her honesty and strength, calling her story 'a great tutorial' and 'a show of character,' recognising the courage it took to speak so openly about something so personal. Beyond footy, Verran works with Cronulla to run clinics, school visits, and events that connect locals to rugby league. 'I just love seeing people have a good time and engage with rugby league,' she said, 'and just the smiles on their faces … they're so passionate about the Sharks and it's just awesome to see.'

NRL legends rip into footy star for shocking mid-game act: 'He should get a job on Neighbours'
Footy great Andrew Voss has torn into Cronulla star Nicho Hynes after the halfback appeared to flop to the floor during the Sharks' 34-28 defeat by Brisbane. Reece Walsh was the standout as the Broncos charged to an epic second-half comeback, despite conceding four tries in the first half. Cronulla took a firm grip on the match early on, with Siosifa Talakai crossing the try line after four minutes before William Kennedy scored a brace of tries. The Broncos soon found their momentum, with Josiah Karapani finishing off a well-worked move out wide. However, Hynes, stepping up in defence, appeared to throw himself to the floor and appealed to the officials for an obstruction penalty. The referees looked to the Bunker, who decided against awarding Cronulla a penalty and disallowing the try. Voss, meanwhile, fumed at the act, claiming Hynes should get a job working on the TV show Neighbours for his acting. 'We can't let him get away with this,' Andrew Voss said to Fox Sports. 'I know we have seen things similar before but please. If this is given a no-try he gets an acting job with Neighbours. 'Everyone stops and throws their arms up, what have we created here?' After the Bunker ruled that no foul had been committed by the Broncos, Voss expressed his relief in the commentary box. 'I think that's a hallelujah moment for the game on obstruction and I hope that everyone learns a lesson there,' he added. Cooper Cronk agreed with Voss, lumping praise on the referee. 'Nicho Hynes has gone to act as if he's been obstructed,' he said. 'Well done referee, well done bunker. Cronulla Sharks are looking for a shortcut.' The result leaves the Sharks sixth in the NRL ladder, with coach Craig Fitzgibbon hoping that his side can deliver better performances to make the top four. 'We've just got to focus on getting a better performance at the minute,' he told reporters. 'Whatever anyone else says about us we can't control. 'We've been unsettled the whole year, for different reasons. I don't want to sit here and make excuses about it, I want to do something about it.' When Sharks hooker Blayke Brailey darted over from dummy half to secure a 28-12 lead in the 56th minute, the Broncos appeared cooked in front of 39,042 fans at Suncorp Stadium. Instead, the Broncos scored four tries in 18 minutes, with Walsh setting up two, to usurp the Sharks in fifth position. Sharks forward Teig Wilton went to hospital in the first half after suffering blurred vision from an eye injury, before winger Sione Katoa had a brain explosion on the cusp of halftime. He was sin-binned for a ridiculous touch on Ezra Mam when he was lying in the ruck. The Broncos were too daft to make the most of it. Instead, Brailey darted over from close range and the result appeared secured, but the Sharks then fell apart. Winger Ronaldo Mulitalo was ruled to have knocked on and Walsh made the Sharks pay with a bullet pass to centre Gehamat Shibasaki. Skipper Adam Reynolds then darted and weaved in traffic and threw a basketball-style pass for Karapani to score his second try double in as many weeks. Reynolds landed it from the sideline for a 30-28 lead. When Walsh carved through Hynes to set up Shibasaki for his second, it was all over. The first half was a bizarre affair, with the Sharks leading 22-12 at the break. Brisbane's kicking game and line speed were poor, with fullback Walsh giving up two seven-tackle sets. The Sharks attacked with freedom, halves Trindall and Hynes both playing leading roles. Trindall laid on the pass for centre Siosifa Talakai to score. He was at it again to put Wilton through a gaping hole, and fullback William Kennedy finished it off for a 10-0 lead. The Sharks opened the scoring through Talakai after Broncos winger Jesse Arthars spilt a bomb. Kennedy scored his second with a classic after Hynes sent second-rower Briton Nikora on his merry way. Trindall did the same for Hynes to stroll through for a 22-6 lead after Broncos hooker Cory Paix darted over from dummy half for the softest try you will ever see. Mam scored on the cusp of halftime to keep the home side in it.

Billy Slater urged to make Reece Walsh call after Broncos fullback stars in comeback win
Reece Walsh has put Maroons coach Billy Slater on notice after a scintillating performance on Sunday, leading the Broncos to a stunning 34-28 comeback win over Cronulla. The 22-year-old, renowned for his flashy style, produced some moments of magic as well as some grit and toughness as the Broncos turned around a 28-12 deficit to get their season back on track. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Walsh finished with two try assists, three linebreak assists, a linebreak, five tackle busts and 178m in a performance sure to have got Slater's attention. 'He's a competitor, and I guess we all expect Reecey to come up with those things, just with what he's able to do,' Michael Maguire said after the Broncos' win on Sunday. 'He just keeps competing.' And with Slater looking forward to Game 3, many have suggested he may axe struggling fullback Kalyn Ponga and either look to Walsh or switch Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to fullback. In Game 1, the Knights superstar had 21 runs for 163 metres, and it was even more dire in Game 2 as he registered just eight runs for 77 metres, as well as missing four tackles and making two errors. His Game 2 horror show led former Broncos and Warriors player Denan Kemp to suggest Slater should drop him for the Origin decider. 'He dropped three bombs. He got bounced off by Cleary and got lucky there was an obstruction,' Kemp said on the Bloke in a Bar podcast on Thursday 'I think Billy has to have a real hard look at that fullback position. I think KP (Ponga) is just out of form. 'It's tough but if you've got that many errors, it's just a real question we (Queensland) have to ask ourselves. We need someone who's bringing energy around the ruck, making their catches and tackles. It's definitely a question that I think Billy should be considering because we can't afford to go into Game 3 and have that many dropped balls. We'll lose by 30-plus.' And after Sunday's incredible performance, Slater appears to have been handed the perfect solution to his problem in the form of Walsh. The fullback has played five Origin games and if not being out with a knee injury early in the season, many believe he would have been Slater's preferred No.1. Walsh's knee is still far from right with the fullback seen limping on several occasions during the win. However, the 22-year-old says it is getting better each week. 'It's good, I was trying to hide it (laughs),' Walsh said of his knee. 'It's a work in progress. I am still trying to get used to the feel of it.' And after an incredible showing on Sunday fans have called for Slater to pick him at fullback for the State of Origin decider, declaring even a one-legged Walsh is their best chance at reclaiming the Origin shield. 'I know he's not 100% but there's a case for Reece Walsh playing FB for QLD, moving Ponga to 14?' one fan wrote. 'Surely Reece Walsh has to be picked for Origin III. A one-legged Walsh is better than Ponga,' another said. 'Queensland can't go without Reece Walsh in SOO III when he's in this sort of form. It's irresistible. Just got to decide whether Kalyn Ponga can be afforded on the bench alongside Kurt Mann and two other forwards,' a third added. While a fourth said: 'Walsh is back!'. NSW will have a home-ground advantage for the series decider, which will take place at Sydney's Accor Stadium on Wednesday, July 9.
