McConville extends stint as Wicklow boss

Oisin McConville has extended his stay as Wicklow senior football manager for another two years, taking him through to the end of the 2027 season. The Armagh All-Ireland winner was appointed in 2022 and led the county to the Tailteann Cup semi-finals in June, where they lost to Limerick. Advertisement The Leinster county also narrowly missed out on promotion to Division Three earlier this year. Following that loss, McConville questioned whether he would continue in the role given the travel commitments. McConville was co-manager of his own club Crossmaglen when they won the Ulster title in 2015. He also managed Seneschalstown in Meath and had a spell in charge of Monaghan outfit Inniskeen Grattans. "This year, under his leadership, Wicklow came within a score of promotion and delivered a thrilling Tailteann Cup semi-final display, only to be edged out by Limerick in the closing minutes," Wicklow GAA said. Advertisement "The progress achieved on and off the field has been widely commended by players, supporters and county board delegates alike." Their statement added: "His commitment to fostering emerging talent, refining our tactical identity and driving a high-performance culture gives us every confidence that Wicklow football will continue to flourish."

Minute's silence held at Croke Park for Crossmaglen's Tom McKay

Mr McKay, who passed away following a short illness on Sunday, was the public relations officer (PRO) of Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club for 20 years. The County Down native became PRO at 60 in 1996 and stayed in the role until he was 81. In a past interview with this paper, he said he took the job on a 'temporary basis.' He was part of a key period for the club when Crossmaglen Rangers won 13 Armagh Senior Football Championships in a row from 1996 to 2008 - a record the club still holds. During this time, the team also won seven Ulster Club Championship titles and four All-Ireland Club Championship titles. Crossmaglen Rangers said they were 'deeply saddened' by his passing and paid tribute to his long service. The club stated: 'The Executive, players, members and supporters of Crossmaglen Rangers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a true Ranger. 'Tom, PRO for 20 years, lotto promoter, a true supporter and dear friend- he represented the black and amber with pride and distinction, and we thank Tom for his long and dedicated service. 'He was immensely proud of his daughters, Aine and Sinead, son-in-law Joey, and grandson Aaron when they togged out for the Rangers.' Newry Shamrocks GAC, where he also served as a former secretary prior to his tenure in Crossmaglen, paid tribute to the 'true Gael.' In a statement, the club wrote: 'Tom dedicated countless years to our club, working tirelessly behind the scenes with quiet strength, humility, and deep passion for our games. 'His commitment shaped generations of players and volunteers, and his legacy will live on in every corner of Páirc Esler. 'Later, Tom continued his remarkable service with Crossmaglen Rangers, where he was equally admired and respected. Few individuals leave a mark on two great clubs — but Tom was no ordinary man.' The club added: 'To his family, we offer our heartfelt condolences. Thank you for sharing him with us. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Rest easy, Tom. You will never be forgotten.' Among other roles, Mr McKay served as chair of the board of governors at St Joseph's High School, where he helped campaign for a new school building. The new facility opened in 2023. At the time, he described the new school as the end of a 'long struggle' to upgrade the 60-year-old building, aiming to 'enhance facilities and ensure young people of South Armagh are educated in a building fit for purpose.' St Joseph's High School also thanked Mr McKay for his efforts, saying, 'We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom for everything he has done for St Joseph's High School.' For those wishing to pay their respects, the funeral will take place on Wednesday at St Patrick's Church, Crossmaglen, with Requiem Mass at 11am.

Rian O'Neill with Armagh squad for Ulster Final

Rian O'Neill has arrived with the Armagh squad as the All-Ireland champions prepare for Saturday evening's Ulster Football Final against holders Donegal. 2024 All-Star O'Neill has not featured for the Orchard County this year and manager Kieran McGeeney said in mid March that he didn't expect the Crossmaglen man to play inter-county football in 2025. However, a togged-out O'Neill was with the Armagh players when they walked on the Clones pitch during the half-time interval of the Ulster Ladies Final between Armagh and Donegal. O'Neill was not named in the Armagh squad when it was announced on Thursday but there will be speculation now that he could play a part in the contest. Any possible changes to the Armagh squad are likely to be announced around 30 minutes before the 17:25 BST throw-in. The forward has been playing for his club this season.
