Gunman in St. Paul grocery store shootout identified by family; had 3 prior felony convictions
Family members say 32-year-old Tevin Bellaphant died by suicide after a shooting spree that ended at a St. Paul Cub Foods last week. Police say it all began at this home with a domestic assault call to 911. Tevin Bellaphant's sister, Nakia Bellaphant, didn't want to talk about the incident, just about her brother. "He supported us, he was a good person," she said. "Nothing like this should have happened." Two young cousins say Tevin Bellaphant doted on them. "He wasn't really a bad person," Kavaria Hutchinson said. "The events that took place on Friday don't define him. He was one of my favorite cousins." But last Friday, police say he went on a rampage, grabbing a 4-year-old relative and taking the boy to a nearby Aldi, where he exchanged gunfire with St. Paul police. Tevin Bellaphant then ran out of the Aldi, toward Destiny Cafe. Staffers there say he fired some rounds, injuring two women, and then he proceeded to run out of the cafe to the Cub Foods. Tevin Bellaphant left the 4-year-old relative unhurt at the Aldi. The two women suffered minor injuries. After a standoff with police, Bellaphant died by suicide inside the Cub. Tevin Bellaphant has three prior felony convictions in Minnesota, meaning he was barred from having a gun. Those convictions include domestic assault, assault with a dangerous weapon and burglary. Friday's events unfolded two blocks from popular Lake Phalen and in a packed shopping center at lunchtime. "With everything that has happened here, it's definitely more dangerous than it should be," shopper Nancy Yang said. Multiple officers are on standard leave following the shooting, in which officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Law enforcement is expected to release more information on Tuesday. If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Nearly 3,000 Cub Foods workers win new contract with pension contributions, raises
Nearly 3,000 Cub Foods workers win new contract with pension contributions, raises originally appeared on Bring Me The News. After contentious negotiations that included unfair labor practice charges and the threat of a strike, hundreds of unionized Cub Foods workers across the Twin Cities have a new contract. UFCW Local 663 announced this week that it has ratified a three-year contract with higher wages for all employees, increased hours for part-time workers, and "significant investment" in worker pensions. The union represents nearly 3,000 grocery store workers at Cub locations operated by United Natural Foods (UNFI) and Haug's. The contract includes employer pension contributions of 8.8% year over year and wage increases of 9.5% to 13% for full-time workers over the course of the contract. That's a $3.15 an hour increase for workers employed by Haug's and a $3 increase for those with UNFI. Workers at UNFI's Cub stores will also have limitations on involuntary store transfers, as well as improved scheduling protections. 'Members organized, fought for, and won a contract that raises standards for essential grocery workers. These workers had incredible support from customers and leaders like Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and Senator Bernie Sanders,' UFCW Local 663 President Rena Wong said in a statement. 'Together, we are ensuring good jobs for all Minnesotans.' As part of the agreement, UFCW will drop the unfair labor practice charges that were filed during the negotiations. Those charges were the subject of a letter sent to the companies from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in June. UNFI said in a statement to Bring Me The News: "We are pleased to have reached a new collective bargaining agreement with UFCW Local 663. The new agreement includes strong wage increases, continued market leading union health care and significant increases in our contributions to the union's pension plan, while ensuring Cub has the flexibility to continue to meet the needs of the thousands of customers we serve each day." Approximately 2,500 of the unionized Cub workers are employed by UNFI. Earlier this year, UFCW was negotiating new deals for workers with seven grocery companies around the Twin Cities. A contract was ratified in May with Lunds & Byerlys, Jerry's Enterprises, Kowalski's, and Radermacher's Shakopee Cub. A new deal was ratified with Knowlan's Festival Foods in story was originally reported by Bring Me The News on Jul 1, 2025, where it first appeared.

Cyberattack at grocery, pharmacy stores worry Minnesota shoppers
Minnesotans are having trouble filling shopping carts and more importantly, prescriptions. A cyberattack at food distributor United Natural Foods Incorporated is causing problems for its customers, which includes Cub Foods, Whole Foods, and some co-ops. UNFI released a statement saying it had taken some systems offline to investigate the breach, adding: "As soon as we discovered the activity, an investigation was initiated with the help of leading forensics experts and we have notified law enforcement. We are assessing the unauthorized activity and working to restore our systems to safely bring them back online. As we work through this issue, our customers, suppliers, and associates are our highest priority. We are working closely with them to minimize disruption as much as possible." The problem isn't just leading to potentially empty shelves. Pharmacy systems had to be shut down. UNFI released another statement saying in part: "Currently, half of our pharmacies are fully operational. At pharmacies still experiencing the disruption, we are unable to fill new and refill prescription orders at this time, but if a prescription was filled last week prior to the start of the disruption on Friday afternoon, then the prescription is available for pickup. For patients seeking to fill a new or refill a prescription today at disrupted pharmacies, we recommend filling them at another local pharmacy retailer. We are continuing to work to restore our systems to safely bring them back online." UNFI recommends people check the Cub Pharmacy app or the Cub website to confirm which location to go to before fulfilling a prescription. WCCO talked with a triage nurse in the Twin Cities. She didn't want to share her identity, but she did want to share the headache the Cub Foods pharmacy disruption is causing her patients. "Anytime you transfer a controlled substance to a pharmacy that a pharmacy isn't familiar with the patient, they need to call us and get all this information on the patient. So, then they're waiting even longer for their prescriptions. We have one patient who's been waiting four days to get her prescription filled," the nurse told WCCO. "And then some of the medications we're prescribing have shortages on them. So, they were getting them reliably from Cub and now they're being told that they've got to call around everywhere else to find shortages. It's wild." On top of waiting to get their medication, the nurse tells WCCO people are worried that their personal information and medical history was stolen. 'It's kind of scary" said customer Otto Megles. "I had a delivery due today. I got a text about 6:30 this morning saying it was canceled. I asked if they could process my order at a later time and date, and they said probably not until the weekend." Seward Community Co-Op says it has been impacted by the cyber attack as well. "UNFI has not been shipping product, though National Cooperative Grocers (NCG) negotiated one or two tiny deliveries to help offset the lack of supply. We don't expect much product from UNFI until next week," Seward Community Co-op said in a statement. WCCO reached out to Cub Foods for a statement to learn how many pharmacies were affected and the company's message to customers. WCCO is waiting to hear back.
