Cork opt against homecoming after All-Ireland final loss

The Cork squad have opted against a homecoming following Sunday's All-Ireland SHC final loss to Tipperary. It was the second year in a row that the Rebels were defeated in the decider – Clare edging them out in 2024 – and while 12 months ago fans gathered to greet them in defeat at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, there will be no such event this time around. "At the request of the team and management, there is no event planned for the return of the Cork hurlers this evening," a statement read. "They would again like to thank all the entire county for their unwavering support throughout the year." Cork had fashioned a six-point interval lead at Croke Park before being completely overrun in the second half, adding just two more points in an eventual 3-27 to 1-18 defeat. Tipperary fans Tipperary PRO Jonathan Cullen said the celebrations will get under way at around 4.30pm in Semple Stadium, with a large crowd is expected to attend the event. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Cullen said the players will hopefully arrive with the Liam MacCarthy Cup at around 7.30pm.

Axed Today star Alex Cullen opens up about 'Lambo guy' scandal and confirms TV return with Seven, as ex-colleague Karl Stefanovic lends support

Alex Cullen has officially returned to the screen, confirming a new TV role with Channel Seven just months after a headline-making scandal cost him his job at Nine. The former Today Show sports presenter made national news earlier this year when he accepted $50,000 from billionaire Adrian Portelli, better known as "Lambo guy", to refer to him on air by his preferred nickname, "McLaren Man". The moment triggered a media firestorm and led to Cullen stepping down from his role at Nine, followed shortly by his departure from the network altogether. Now, speaking publicly for the first time since the drama unfolded, the 44-year-old told Stellar's Something To Talk About podcast the incident marked "the hardest, toughest week of my career". "Never in a million years did I expect that all to go down," he told host Sarrah Le Marquand. "That week was a whirlwind, like, is this really happening? And it absolutely was." Cullen said he and wife Bonnie did their best to shield their three young children from the fallout, but suspects they still picked up on the chaos. "They saw me on the phone, pacing, trying to survive it all," he admitted. "But you've just got to put one foot in front of the other. It's a little clichéd, but it's true. My wife was a pillar of strength." The veteran presenter also credited close friends, including Today Show co-host Karl Stefanovic, for rallying around him in the aftermath. On Friday, Stefanovic quietly showed his ongoing support by liking Cullen's Instagram post about his Stellar magazine cover. "His ability to not let it faze him is amazing," Cullen said of Stefanovic, who himself was publicly axed and later reinstated as cohost of the Today Show in 2020. "I'm thankful I (had) those five years (on Today) with him; he was supportive throughout that. We had a great chat after it all happened, and he congratulated me." Despite the warm response from friends, colleagues and even strangers on the street, Cullen admitted the scandal sent him into a spiral which he is still recovering from. "You're like, why did I do (that)? How did I get in this situation? I mean, I know how. But you just think, you idiot … Your confidence is shot. So you've got to reset yourself. I went to some dark places. "It was a silly mistake, one I should have thought through. But I can't go back and change any of it. It's there for [all] to see. But I have a chance now to rewrite the next chapter." That new chapter is already well underway, with Cullen set to start not one but two new media gigs, including a return to Channel Seven, the network where he previously worked for 16 years. "It's really exciting. It's been in the works for a little while, and it's wonderful to be going back to Seven," he said. The TV star remained tight-lipped on what the new role actually entailed, only hinting, "Seven are adding some news offerings to their daytime line-up, and I'm going to be part of that." Cullen revealed Seven were quick to reach out after his departure from Nine, offering support and a potential path forward. "After everything went down [at Nine this year], Seven were one of the first on the phone to say: 'You have our support, and if you want to come back, we're a phone call away'. I can't tell you how much that meant to me and my family." In addition to his new TV role, Cullen and his family have relocated from Sydney to Melbourne so he can co-host The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show on radio, starting Monday. "I'm looking forward to getting back into it, just connecting with people, telling their stories," he said. "It's not very nice being the story. It's better telling the story."

Graffiti artist who caused over €60k damage pepper-sprayed train driver when confronted

Judge Martin Nolan adjourned sentencing to later this week but warned 'I think he deserves a salutary lesson.' A GRAFFITI artist who caused more than €60,000 worth of damage to railway carriages and equipment pepper-sprayed a train driver in the face when he confronted him. Sean Cullen (22) assaulted the driver during a struggle when he was caught painting "tags" on trains at a DART depot, a court heard. He was also identified taking part in a series of similar spray-painting incidents that had 'heavy' financial consequences for Irish Rail. Judge Martin Nolan adjourned sentencing to later this week but warned 'I think he deserves a salutary lesson.' Cullen, an apprentice electrician of Hope Avenue, East Wall, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault and criminal damage. The court heard on September 25, 2021, a train driver was at Fairview DART depot when he spotted two people and recognised that they were not employees. One was Cullen and the driver approached and grabbed him. A physical altercation ensued and during the struggle, Cullen pepper-sprayed the driver to the left side of his face before the other man 'intervened'. The victim (51) suffered a swollen face and was in 'quite a lot of pain' when gardai arrived at the scene. Both perpetrators had fled at that stage and Cullen was identified on CCTV footage. His home was searched under warrant and gardai found spray cans and other items. Further damage was caused to a train at Dublin's docklands on February 21, 2020, when gardai were again able to identify Cullen from footage. The outside of the carriage was damaged with silver and black spray paint, while the inside was tagged with the letters SD, written by marker. The intensity of the tag's visibility "increased over time." On June 6, 2020, the word 'Akems' was sprayed on a signal equipment container at the DART tracks at Merrion Gates in south Dublin. Prosecutor Marc Thompson BL said the total damage Cullen was accountable for was €60,914, covering carriages that had to be taken out of commission, and resprayed. There was a potential further loss of €40,000 to the company for use of replacement vehicles but Cullen was not being held responsible for that. Mr Thompson said there was a 'certain similarity' with tags at other locations such as 'Akems' and 'SD' and some of these tags were done by other people. Cullen had one previous conviction for a similar criminal damage offence. Sean Cullen Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 16th Defence barrister Karl Monahan said it was a 'very unfortunate series of offences' with 'no real explanation' and serious consequences for Irish Rail. There was a lot of graffiti around in the area where Cullen grew up, and he 'became fascinated by it,' Mr Monahan said. He also became interested in a movement by street artists in New York in the 1970s spraying trains, and started doing this himself. 'He was shocked when he found out the costs associated with these acts,' Mr Monahan said. 'He never imagined it would be anything like that.' Judge Nolan said the accused had 'persistently' sprayed the carriages, 'causing a huge amount of inconvenience.' Mr Monahan said Cullen 'can't undo that' but he had €2,000 compensation in court and had written a letter of apology. He said he was 'deeply ashamed' of himself, had never intended to cause any harm and did not realise the scale of the damage. The case was adjourned to Friday.
