Six River Island stores in Scotland among dozens of closures
Six River Island stores across Scotland are set to close after the company announced it would be restructuring amid an increase in running costs. It comes after the retailer unveiled a radical restructuring plan in a bid to reverse recent heavy losses due to a slump in trading last week. Bosses blamed the closures on the 'migration of shoppers from the high street to online' and higher costs to run stores. The company previously confirmed 33 stores would be closing, and announced on Wednesday that six Scottish stores were among them. Stores in Edinburgh Princes Street, Falkirk, Cumbernauld, Kirkcaldy, Kilmarnock and Perth will all close. A further 71 stores are also at risk, depending on talks with landlords in order to secure improved rental deals. The retailer, which employs around 5,500 people, was founded in 1948 under the Lewis and Chelsea Girl brand before being renamed in the 1980s. Ben Lewis, chief executive of River Island, said the sharp rise in the cost of doing business has added to the financial burden the company faces. 'We have a clear strategy to transform the business to ensure its long-term viability,' he said. He added that recent improvements in the company's fashion offer and in-store shopping experience are already showing 'very positive' results. He continued: 'It is only with a restructuring plan that we will be able to see this strategy through and secure River Island's future as a profitable retail business. 'We regret any job losses as a result of store closures, and we will try to keep these to a minimum.' 'Key milestone' as Ibrox to host more SWPL games than ever
Ibrox will host more Rangers women's matches "than ever before" next season.A club statement says the Govan ground will "become the home venue for SWPL matches, subject to scheduling clashes".However, Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld will continue "to be a venue for the women's team when Ibrox is unavailable".The club say "uncertainty of the men's European fixtures, especially midweek games, will also need to be taken into account".The statement adds: "While the club is excited to host the majority of women's games at Ibrox next season, it is important to stress that not every home game will be played there."The goal is to use Ibrox as often as possible, but scheduling conflicts will be the main factor in determining whether a game is held at Ibrox."Meanwhile, women's and girls' managing director Donald Gillies says the decision to move the majority of the club's SWPL games to Ibrox marks a "key milestone"."This is a big day for our women's first team, and indeed, the entire women's programme at Rangers," he added."Ibrox is one of the most recognisable venues anywhere in football, and to know we'll be playing even more games there than ever before will be a huge thrill for the team, and I am sure our supporters too."This move will not only help attract top talent to the team, but also ensure we continue to retain and develop our players as we push for greater success."

Cumbernauld Colts boss has target date to play on new Broadwood pitch as side prepare for 'outside' friendlies
Cumbernauld Colts boss John Doyle is hoping his side can get their first game on the new Broadwood pitch before they kick off their Lowland League campaign on July 26. The pitch at the stadium is being relayed this summer and owners North Lanarkshire Council have told the club - and groundsharing Hamilton Accies - that the surface will be ready in time for the start of the new season. Advertisement Colts will play their home friendlies on the outside public pitch at Broadwood while the works are going on, but Doyle is hopeful their final friendly on July 19 against local rivals Cumbernauld United for the pre-season Cumbernauld Cup will be played inside Broadwood. He said: 'Broadwood outside is not ideal preparation. You would want to get a few games on the new surface and find your feet on it before the start of the season, but it is what it is. 'We are hoping to play our last friendly on July 19 against Cumbernauld United on the pitch, but it is still to be confirmed yet that the pitch will be ready in time. 'We hope that will be the first time we get to use it and we will get to train on it that week in the build-up to our first league game of the season. Advertisement Colts announced their pre-season friendlies will kick off on June 26 with a clash against West Park United, kick-off 1.30pm outside at Broadwood. That is followed by a trip to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy on June 30, kick-off 8pm, and a clash with St Mirren B is scheduled for July, although details for that are to be confirmed. Shotts Bon Accord will come to Broadwood on July 12, kick-off 2pm, and Colts will then visit Camelon Juniors on July 15, kick-off 7.30pm, before finishing up with the clash against Cumbernauld United on July 19. Hamilton Accies given Broadwood lease green light ahead of fixtures release
Hamilton Accies have been given the go-ahead to play their home games at Broadwood Stadium, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal. The League One club and their supporters were left sweating over the planned move from New Douglas Park, with the SPFL asking Accies to make amendments to their lease for the North Lanarkshire owned site in Cumbernauld. Advertisement However, it is understood Accies, who are sharing the stadium with Cumbernauld Colts, Rangers Women and various youth teams, have now had their lease to play at Broadwood green lit. This will be officially confirmed tomorrow when the SPFL fixtures are released at 9am and Hamilton's home games will be marked up to take place at Broadwood. The Hamilton players and staff are back for pre-season this week and have been using indoor facilities at Broadwood ahead of beginning pre-season training in earnest today, due to take place on outside pitches at the venue while the stadium surface is being relayed this month. Both Cumbernauld Colts boss John Doyle, left, and Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin will see their sides play at the venue The new pitch is expected to be ready by the end of July, in time for the start of the new SPFL league campaign, which kicks off on Saturday, August 2. Advertisement Last month, the Hamilton Accies board of directors announced the men's team and their academy would be leaving their spiritual home at New Douglas Park after a dispute with the stadium owners. The women's team have opted to stay at the venue as an independent entity, which has led to HAFC calling on them to stop using the Accies branding and intellectual property immediately.
