Golfweek's Best 2025: Top 200 Classic Courses in the U.S., ranked
Looking to play the best old-school cool golf courses? We have you covered with Golfweek's Best 2025 list of the Top 200 Classic Courses opened before 1960 in the United States. Each year we publish many lists of course rankings, with this Top 200 Classic list among the premium offerings. The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses, and their overall ratings on a 10-point basis are averaged to produce these rankings. The top handful of courses in the world have an average rating of above 9, while many excellent layouts fall into the high-6 to the 8 range. Why do we split our rankings between Modern and Classic, with 1960 as a break point? Because they are two very different eras. As written in our rater's handbook, the Classic style of architecture was basically natural with intimate routings that enabled holes to cling to native landforms. Designers were not afraid to utilize dramatic slopes or to sculpt bunkers into artistic shapes utilizing the given features of land. Earth scraping was minimal, as opposed to Modern courses that utilize heavy machinery. Greens were built from native soil that was pushed up and shaped, giving Classic designers enormous freedom to build oddly shaped putting surfaces with more contour than typically seen in the Modern era, when green speeds became much greater. The greater abundance of buildable land in those days also gave architects tremendous creative freedom. On to the rankings: To ensure these lists are up-to-date, Golfweek's Best in recent years has altered how individual ratings are compiled into the rankings. Only ratings from rounds played in the past 10 years are included in the compilations. This helps ensure that any course in the rankings still measures up. Courses also must have a minimum of 25 votes to qualify for the Top 200 Modern or the Top 200 Classic. Other Golfweek's Best lists, such as Best Courses You Can Play or Best Private, do not require as many votes. This makes it possible that a course can show up on other Golfweek's Best lists but not on the premium Top 200 Modern and Classic lists. * Indicates new to or returning to this list. 1. Rooms from Pacific Heights Zellerbach mansion to be auctioned
The contents of four rooms in the historic James D. Zellerbach residence in Pacific Heights, designed by famed American interior designer Frances Elkins, will be up for auction this summer at Christie's. 'American Avant-Garde: The James D. Zellerbach Residence by Frances Elkins' will lead Christie's Design Week sales June 12 at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The auction includes pieces by Elkins as well as French interior designer Jean-Michel Frank, French artist and architect Emilio Terry and famed Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. 'The principal rooms that we've offered lots from include the bar, the card room, the gallery and the foyer. Those elements have not moved since 1937,' said Victoria Tudor, head of sale and design for Christie's New York. Tudor noted it is exceedingly rare to find fully intact room designs by Elkins, but that over the years, the designer has attracted a 'cult' following of people who try to recreate Elkins interiors. 'There's an infinity for the modernity of her interiors, but there's also an affinity for the comfort of it, too,' she said. The rooms' contents are for sale by the house's current owner (who is remaining anonymous). The Zellerbach residence was previously owned by late art collectors and philanthropist Norah and Norman Stone. Frances Adler Elkins (1888-1953) is well known for pioneering an aesthetic that combined classical elements and historical references with modern art and design details. The younger sister of architect David Adler, she ranks among the most famous designers of the 20th century along with contemporaries like Elsie de Woolf, Dorothy Draper and Sister Parish as well as younger designers including William Haines, Tony Duquette and Billy Baldwin. Elkins lived in Monterey following her divorce in 1923 from wealthy polo player Felton Broomall Elkins and began her career designing homes in Pebble Beach for her socialite friends. In 1930, she designed the clubhouse for Monterey's Cypress Point Club. During that decade, she became a decorator of choice for prosperous San Franciscans including the Crocker, Haas and de Young families. Her Hollywood clients included silent film star John Gilbert; actress Norma Shearer and her husband, film executive Irving Thalberg; actor and art collector Edward G. Robison; actress Irene Dunne and 'Gone With the Wind' producer David O. Selznick. Her public projects included the 'Italian Gallery' at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1939 and the decoration of Stern Hall, the first women's dormitory at UC Berkeley in 1942. In 2023 she was the subject of the book 'Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer,' by San Francisco design historian Scott Powell. 'She's one of the true pioneers of interior design,' said Tudor. 'What really attracts me to Frances Elkins interiors in particular is that sense of comfort. She is steeped in history in her own way, but also not afraid to look at the future. She was blending the antique with the modern.' Early sale highlights include two rare Giacometti 'Oiseau' plaster bird wall hangings (estimated at $2,000,000-$3,000,000 each) and a set of the artist's 'Pyramides' fireplace andirons (dated 1930-1933 with a $300,000-$500,000.) 'The 'Oiseau' graced the vestibule right behind the front door, they were your welcome to the Zellerbach residence,' said Tudor. 'These two birds would flank either side, so when you first came in there was this gorgeous archway that encompassed the entirety of your environment before you got through the lattice door, and each bird was on either side and they had this curvature that was housing them since 1937. They are similar to those that you've seen in other incredible collections including that of (fashion designer) Hubert de Givenchy.' Other significant lots include an 'Aragon' table (estimated at $400,000-$600,000) and a rare fireplace log holder (estimated at $8,000-$12,000) by Frank. Pieces by Terry include a plaster palm leaf console (estimated at $100,000-$150,000) and branch frame mirror (estimated at $50,000-$70,000). 'She had a close relationship with Jean-Michel Frank and with Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali and (French designer and fashion illustrator) Christian Berard,' said Tudor. 'That was the society of Paris in the '20s, '30s and '40s. She spent half of the year in France and half of a year in California.' Among the pieces by Elkins herself is a games table and four chairs (estimated at $30,000-$50,000) as well as a pair of her famed tree-form floor lamps (estimated at $20,000-$30,000). 'They are so contemporary, it's hard to believe they're from 1937,' Tudor said of the lamps. 'That's what I love about (Elkins.) She transcends generations.'
