Wayne Rooney linked with shock job at football minnows Macclesfield six months after Plymouth disaster which saw England legend living 260 MILES away from wife Coleen

Wayne Rooney is reportedly being lined up for a shock move to non-league minnows Macclesfield just six months after being given the boot by Plymouth Argyle. The Manchester United and England legend has been working as a pundit for Amazon Prime since he was axed on New Year's Eve but could be set to replace Robbie Savage as Macclesfield head coach. The former midfielder has been in charge of the Silkmen since last year, winning 40 of his 51 games in charge, and said it would need a 'really special job' to tempt him away. But he has been heavily linked with the vacant Forest Green Rovers job after Steve Cotteril's sacking. Rooney is now in line to take over Savage's role were he to depart, according to The Sun. The ex-United and Everton star endured a miserable seven-month stint at Home Park, winning just five of his 25 games and leaving them languishing at the bottom of the Championship table. Plymouth's form greatly improved under Miron Muslic but the Pilgrims were condemned to relegation to League One. It came after another dismal 83-day spell in charge of Birmingham that brought nine defeats in 15 games. His first foray in management came at D.C. United, before he took charge of Derby in 2020. A move to Macclesfield would allow the 39-year-old to remain at his Cheshire home alongside wife Coleen. He had to grow accustomed to his wife's absence during his spell at Plymouth, with his family living 260 miles away in Cheshire, while he stayed in a rented seaside flat. England's second highest goalscorer ever was often found frequenting local bars on his evenings off, with the stress of managing his side appearing to be overwhelming. Rooney was once separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, as she took part in I'm A Celebrity While at Plymouth, Rooney was at one point separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, with Coleen taking part in last year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in Australia. Meanwhile, Macclesfield, who were reformed in 2020 following their liquidation, will compete in the National League North, the sixth tier, next season. They secured promotion from the Northern Premier League last season after accumulating 109 points, 26 more than their nearest title rivals.

Paul Pogba set for Monaco medical ahead of Ligue 1 move

Paul Pogba is set to undergo a medical at Monaco on Friday ahead of a proposed move to the Ligue 1 club. The Athletic reported on June 13 that Monaco were interested in move for Pogba. The 32-year-old is a free agent having left Juventus by mutual consent in November 2024. Pogba had not played for the Italian side since the previous September, after he failed an anti-doping test. He was initially given a four-year ban that was reduced to 18 months on appeal, which meant he was eligible to return to training in January and to playing in March. Advertisement Pogba had been linked with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) after he was pictured at several matches during his ban. The Athletic reported in April that D.C. United owned the Frenchman's discovery rights. Monaco's move for Pogba comes with the club also expected to sign Ansu Fati on loan from Barcelona. The 22-year-old is set to undergo a medical on Friday. Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last term, four points behind second-placed Marseille and 23 behind winners Paris Saint-Germain. Though a 91-time France international, Pogba has not played senior football in his homeland, having moved to Manchester United's academy from Le Havre as a youth. Pogba made his professional debut for United in October 2011, playing only seven times before leaving at the end of that season and joining Juventus. There, he established himself as one of the world's best midfielders, winning four consecutive Serie A titles, two Coppas Italia and finishing runner-up in the Champions League in 2014-15. Pogba moved back to United for €110million (£93.2m) in the summer of 2016 but struggled with injuries towards the end of his contract and returned to Juventus on a free transfer six years later. He made only 10 appearances in 2022-23, and featured twice before his ban the following campaign.

Russell, Gozo score goals, Real Salt Lake snap 7-game winless streak, beats DC United 2-0

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Johnny Russell scored his first goal of the season, 18-year-old Zavier Gozo also scored a goal and Real Salt Lake beat D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday night to snap their seven-game winless streak. Rafael Cabral finished with a save and had his fourth shutout of the season for Salt Lake (5-10-3). Advertisement Russell, who signed with Salt Lake in April after he scored 60 goals across seven MLS seasons for Kansas City, scored in the 23rd minute. Russell ran down the right side onto a long ball-ahead played by Diogo Goncalves, cut back to evade a defender near the right corner of the area and rolled a shot into the net to give RSL a 1-0 lead. The 35-year-old Russell, who made his first start for the club, was replaced at halftime by Aiden Hezarkhani, the 17-year-old rookie's second MLS appearance. Gozo slipped behind the defense, ran onto a long ball-ahead played by Alexandros Katranis and beat goalkeeper Luis Barraza to make it 2-0 in the 77th. Salt Lake had 58% possession and outshot D.C. United 19-8, 7-1 on target. Barraza finished with five saves. D.C. United (4-9-6), coming off a 7-1 loss to Chicago last Saturday, has just one win in its last eight games. ___ AP soccer:
