Month long E-Khata campaign in July: DKS
Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that a month-long campaign will be held from July 1 to issue E-Khatas to property owners in the city. Speaking at a first-of-its-kind E-Khata mela at Sahakarnagar, Byatarayanapura Assembly constituency represented by Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Sunday, Mr. Shivakumar termed protection of properties against fraudulent transactions through E-Khatas as another 'guarantee' by the Congress government. He said of the over 25 lakh properties in Bengaluru, E-Khatas were issued to 5.34 lakh properties already. 'The E-Khata programme has won a gold medal for e-governance initiative by the Union government. Combined with Nambike Nakshe, under which we have given deemed plan sanctions to over 9,000 buildings online, e-Khata programme is essentially bringing civic services to your doorstep and cutting down on corruption,' he said. The mela in Sahakarnagar saw overwhelming response with over 4,000 tokens issued to E-Khata applicants and 677 final E-Khatas issued at the spot on Sunday. Responding to demands by property owners in the constituency, the mela has been extended to Monday as well. Of the 1.81 lakh properties in Byatarayanapura, over 51,000 properties have been issued E-Khatas. Mr. Shivakumar said that similar E-Khata melas will be held in other Assembly constituencies as well.

Bengaluru street vendors stage protest decrying Deputy CM's statement
Over 500 street vendors from across Bengaluru held a day-long protest at Freedom Park on Tuesday, decrying the recent statement by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar that henceforth only those street vendors identified by the survey will be allowed to hawk in the city, that too only in push carts. The street vendors were unable to meet Chief Civic Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao on Tuesday despite being promised a meeting at 3 p.m. The Karnataka Progressive Street Vendors' Association, which organised the protest has warned of intensifying the protest unless the DCM withdraws his statement and BBMP announces a no-eviction policy. S. Babu, president of the Association and a street vendor from Vijayanagar market, said that the survey had registered only 27,000 street vendors, when the civic body has given loans under the PM SVAnidhi scheme to over 70,000 street vendors in the city. 'The survey has deliberately kept out vendors to show lesser numbers. Now the government cannot turn around and say only these 27,000 vendors will be allowed to hawk. Moreover, Mr. Shivakumar wants to evict these registered vendors as well, giving them electric push carts, asking them not to occupy any permanent spots,' he said, arguing that this was a clear violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014,' said.

HDK bats for tunnel roads in Bengaluru, seeks central assistance for the project
Tunnels roads, a project championed by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar and which has been facing stiff opposition from several quarters, has received unexpected support. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, in a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, termed the project the 'backbone of Bengaluru's future transport infrastructure, addressing current bottlenecks, improving connectivity, and enabling long-term sustainable growth', and sought Union government assistance for the same. The Karnataka Cabinet recently approved ₹17,780 crore for the project from Hebbal to Silk Board. Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited, a SPV floated to implement key big-ticket infrastructure projects, including tunnel roads, is all set to call global tenders for the project. Mr. Kumaraswamy also urged the Centre to support the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project to decongest Bengaluru's core areas.

D.K. Shivakumar's statement on street vendors triggers protest
Recent statement by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar that henceforth only those street vendors identified by the survey will be allowed to hawk in the city, that too only in push carts, has mobilised street vendors and thousands of them are expected to congregate at Freedom Park on Tuesday, to protest against the government's alleged moves to take them off the streets. Street vendor unions have taken serious objections to Mr. Shivakumar's recent statements. 'The survey has registered only 27,000 street vendors, while the civic body has given loans under the PM SVAnidhi scheme to over 70,000 street vendors in the city. The survey has deliberately kept out vendors to show lesser numbers. Now the government cannot turn around and say only these 27,000 vendors will be allowed to hawk. Moreover, Mr. Shivakumar wants to evict these registered vendors as well, giving them electric push carts, asking them not to occupy any permanent spots. This is in clear violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014,' said S. Babu, president, Karnataka Progressive Street Vendors' Association. 'Where is the space for the poor in Brand Bengaluru?' he asked, referring to the campaign initiated by Mr. Shivakumar. Street vendors are also upset over recent eviction drives by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials targeting street vendors. Recently eviction drives were held at Church Street, Jayanagar, Vijaynagar and St. John's Hospital Road. 'BBMP officials are seizing vendor's material and demanding an undertaking that they will not sell at that place, to even return the goods. These are illegal pressure tactics,' said advocate Vinay Sreenivasa. 'There is no social security or legal protection for unlisted vendors. Tuesday's protest aims to demand issuance of ID cards, basic facilities in markets, and a halt to unlawful evictions,' Mr. Babu added.
