EXCLUSIVE: First look at the lineup of Under the Radar 2026 festival
Under the Radar, consistently one of the most exciting theater and performance festivals in New York City since its launch in 2005, has announced six highlights from its upcoming roster, ahead of a full announcement this fall. Its 21st edition will take place in over 20 venues across the city from January 7-25, 2026. In keeping with the festival's eye toward the best of U.S. and international experimental performance, it will continue to explore dance, music, theater, film, opera, conversation and stagecraft through works by NY-based artists Narcissister (in her first-ever proscenium presentation), The HawtPlates, Kaneza Schaal, Lisa Fagan and Lena Engelstein, as well as European virtuosos Cherish Menzo and Mario Banushi. Booted from its longtime home at the Public Theater in 2023, citing budget cuts, the festival has impressively managed to stay afloat through on-your-feet thinking from founder and artistic director Mark Russell, who has since spread its near-monthlong programming across several of the city's arts institutions. In 2026, these will include Performance Space New York, NYU Skirball, The Performing Garage, HERE Arts Center and Live Artery | New York Live Arts. (Beyond today's initial announcement–more details below–there will also be performances at Lincoln Center, La MaMa, The Chocolate Factory Theater and more to be announced.) Under the Radar is applying its curatorial sense of trust in communal exploration and risk-taking to its leadership model. Beginning in 2026, Russell will share curatorial duties with a cohort of festival curators set to rotate every three years, beginning with co-creative directors Meropi Peponides and Kaneza Schaal. The festival is now produced by Thomas O. Kriegsmann and Sami Pyne of ArKtype, a Tony-nominated production company who has worked with heavy-hitters like John Cameron Mitchell, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Annie-B Parson, and recently made its Broadway premiere with Sufjan Stevens & Justin Peck's Illinoise. More information will be announced in the coming weeks and can be found at Check out these Under the Radar 2026 festival highlights: The HawtPlates Dream Feed HERE Arts Center The HawtPlates, a family singing group formed in a one-bedroom apartment in The Bronx, will premiere Dream Feed, an electroacoustic song cycle that drops audiences into the humor, terror, beauty, and allure of an active mind within a slumbering body. A 2023 HERE Arts Residency Program (HARP) commission with additional commissioning support by UTR, this psychedelic live concept album makes its world premiere in the 2026 Under the Radar Festival. Cherish Menzo DARK MATTER Performance Space New York In DARK MATTER, the Brussels/Amsterdam-based choreographer Cherish Menzo and her onstage partner Camilo Mejía Cortés chop and screw ways to detach their bodies from public perception and their daily reality. Among other references, they look up to the sky, at dark matter, at black holes that meet and collide to give birth to a new, (afro)futuristic and enigmatic body. Together, they throw their bodies into complex conversations that they want to both enter into and transcend—a duality that feeds the performance. Narcississter Voyage into Infinity - following 2024 PW premiere NYU Skirball Channeling raw energy and a punk aesthetic, Voyage into Infinity collides reclaimed, everyday items with the spectacle that has defined much of the masked and merkin-ed performance artist's two-decade practice. The performance pays homage to the elaborate Rube Goldberg machine featured in the canonical 1987 video, The Way Things Go. A live score performed by the musician Holland Andrews will accompany the piece, which premiered and was commissioned last year at Brooklyn's Pioneer Works. Mario Banushi MAMI NYU Skirball The 26-year-old Albanian–born, Greek-based wunderkind Mario Banushi brings his latest work, fresh off raves at the esteemed Avignon Festival. In this silent, powerful ensemble piece, he breaks from his typical theme of mourning to focus instead on the source of life, finding the common ground between the Greek words mami (mom) and mam (food). Kaneza Schaal DATA ROOM The Performing Garage DATA ROOM is a series of intimate, public conversations conceived by New York-based theater, opera, and film artist Kaneza Schaal. The project is the first iteration of a multi-year project exploring how we exchange knowledge, preserve creative lineage, and build shared meaning in a time of fragmented attention and digital overexposure. Lisa Fagan and Lena Engelstein Friday Night Rat Catchers Live Artery I New York Live Arts Beneath the shimmer of a disco ball, lucky contestants dance like they have the world on a string in this piece from the NYC-based experimental performers. The year is 1976, an irresistible bassline drives, and the martinis never run dry. What could go wrong?

May 24 South Africa (Greyville) form analysis
Race 1 (1,200m) Many first-timers. Of those who have run, (4) DARK MATTER has gone close at both starts and was narrowly beaten over course and distance last time. Drawn well and should go close. (6) WINTER BLESSING has come on nicely at recent outings and should be competitive. (7) CASSANDRA got a cautious thumbs-up from her in-form stable and is one to watch in the betting. (2) MS SAKURA has a blue-blood pedigree but may need further. Race 2 (1,200m) Mostly first-timers. Of those who have run, (9) HAWKSDALE found some market support on debut and finished close-up. She takes on males but looks forward enough to take this race. (8) VANAKKAM was a modest second at her second start but has been entered for the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship. (1) GOLDEN OPERATOR has the best of the draws and comes from a strong stable. (13) ZIYAN'S PRIDE has the widest draw but does have some experience. Race 3 (1,400m) (2) RUN FOREST RUN made good improvement at his second start, running on strongly. The extra furlong will suit and from a good draw, he should put in another strong showing. Visiting (6) XENOPHON found market support on debut and showed up well. That experience will count in his favour and he will be a big runner. (4) BRUH was a distant fourth on debut but should come on from that and should enjoy the extra. (9) GOOD OMEN raced green on debut and should come on from that effort. Race 4 (1,800m) (6) DESTINY OF FIRE takes on males but has good form in useful female company of late. She goes well this trip and should be in the shake-up. (2) WORLD OF OUR OWN is back over a more suitable trip and with only 52.5kg to shoulder he should be a big runner. (3) ARVERNI KING was a smart second behind the promising Regulation last time. Richard Fourie replaces the apprentice rider. (14) JOHNNY THE THIEF has the worst of the draws but has been in good form of late and can feature. Race 5 (2,400m) (7) HOLDING THUMBS was making steady progress up the handicap before putting in a below-par effort in the Grade 3 WSB 1900. However, he did not get the best of passages and this step-up in trip will be more to his liking. (8) MARAUDING HORDE has consistent Highveld form over the trip and is a borderline case for a place in the Durban July. A win here will help his cause. (2) SHOOT THE RAPIDS was making late progress in the 1900 and will much prefer this trip. He has a big weight but looks capable. (4) FUTURE SWING was probably in need of his last effort. He shoulders top weight but is not out of it. Race 6 (2,000m) (9) GIVE ME EVERYTHING caught the eye when closing fast from a wide draw and the back of the field when a two-length fourth in the Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas. It snapped a four-race winning streak but the extra could see her back on track in the Grade 2 Woolavington. (6) BEATING WINGS carries top weight but has been in good form on the Highveld and finished third in this race last year. (8) REGENERATION is lightly raced and was a close-up fifth in the recent Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas. She will enjoy the step-up in trip and handy galloping weight. (7) MOCHA BLEND was possibly just in need of her last start when beaten by (10) MASCHERINA. She found good market support that day and is better off at the weights. Race 7 (2,000m) (7) EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN is sure to start deep in the red given his record winning the Grade 1 WSB Cape Met and the Grade 1 Cape Derby and his fast-finishing effort in the recent Grade 2 WSB Guineas. He is ideally suited to this trip and is the horse to beat. Mike and Mathew de Kock have avoided the Grade 2 Woolavington 2000 looking for a Grade 1 win with the filly (4) SPUMANTE DOLCE. She has shown her best form at recent outings and this trip will suit. (1) OKAVANGO was running on late in the Grade 3 WSB 1900. He looks to be up against it in this company but is still improving. (3) CONFEDERATE has not finished further back than second in his eight starts. He won his last two including the Grade 1 SA Classic. If he is ready after a three-month break, he should be right there. Race 8 (1,200m) (10) SOHOT SOWHAT was narrowly beaten by the useful Bevies Delight on this course last time. Title-chasing Gavin Lerena has jumped ship to ride (1) BOSUM BUDDY but weight could have been the decider. Bosum Buddy has the best of the draws backed up by some solid Highveld form. (2) MALCOLM'S DREAM is always dangerous and has dropped in the handicap. (4) WINGS WITHIN ME has not been far back at recent starts and should be competitive. Race 9 (1,200m) (5) DAPPER is a recent addition to the Duncan Howells yard. He was a well beaten third over a mile last run but does appear to be more at home over this shorter trip. (7) PHUTULICIOUS returns from a disappointing Cape trip and has a change of stable. His best recent form has been at Hollywoodbets Greyville and that past form with a drop in trip could see him make big improvement. (9) REAL WAR backed up on his maiden win with another narrow victory. He has been around the turn and can feature again. (8) HONOR OF KINGS is better than his last effort and shows some promise. Race 10 (1,200m) (2) VIRGIN RIVER has only once been out of the money in 13 starts but has been restricted to 1,000m. Greyville favours quick horses and she could handle the extra furlong. (7) GOLDEN MOMENT has consistent Highveld form and stays the trip. She should put in a good showing. (11) GETOFFOFMYCLOUD was a little disappointing on the Poly last run and can do better on the grass. (8) THERE SHE GOES has her 55th start but has been in good form of late. With a 4kg apprentice up, she has only 50kg on her back.

April 23 South Africa (Scottsville) form analysis
Race 1 (1,200m) A fair debut and experience can see (4) INTENSITY and (8) DARK MATTER go closer. But Dark Matter looks to be the better one, albeit there are a number of eye-catching first-timers. (11) STAR IN MOTION and (10) YIPPEE KIYAY are two that may be worth following in the market. Race 2 (1,200m) (1) LIMITLESS SKY has improved and has gone well over this course and distance. (4) KALI BWANA was second behind impressive winner Keukenhof last time. (7) KAPTURE THE PEACE and (8) EDUCATOR could prove to be the best of the debutantes. Race 3 (1,000m) (2) UN BEL DI comes with smart Cape form over the distance. (5) MOJO MAN won well last time. He gets a 4kg claimer aboard and can go in again. (1) KALAHARI ROLLER ran fourth to Mojo Man last time and his last win was over this course and distance. (3) TWENTY ONE MAY is 0.5kg better off than Mojo Man, taking the apprentice allowance into consideration, but is in good form over the trip and can turn the tables. Race 4 (1,600m) (9) DANCING ON A CLOUD was an impressive maiden winner last time. He faces stronger rivals but is capable of improving further. (12) TERMINATOR has a wide draw to contend with but his last win was over the course and distance. Expect a bold showing from him. (1) DAPPER is running over a more suitable trip and has the best draw. (10) THE WOLF won a good race on the Poly last run and stays the trip. The form can hold up. Race 5 (1,600m) (1) ICY BLAST has tumbled down the handicap when contesting sprints. Last time, he was drawn widest and now jumps from a more favourable gate. (7) SUNDANCE KID went close last time. The form has been franked in feature company, so a repeat should see him in the firing line. (5) JP'S PALACE's last win was on this course and he is progressive. (4) PLAZA ACCORD is unbeaten in two runs since returning from a lengthy break. Race 6 (1,200m) (2) KHETHIWE'S DESTINY is smart and has her third run after a lengthy break. She could prove too classy for her male rivals. (5) RIVERSTONE comes with solid Cape form over the trip. If fit and well, he will make his presence felt. (4) AGRADO won well last time. He took a six-point rise in the handicap but can benefit from Rachel Venniker's allowance. (1) MEXICAN PETE improved last time and can surprise. Race 7 (1,200m) (2) REAL WAR won at long odds last start. However, he is a progressive youngster and only got a three-point raise in the handicap. He beat (8) GORGEOUS GUY by the barest of margins and is now 1.5kg better off at the weights. (6) WISSA'S ON FIRE will be a big contender. (9) NOW I GOT YOU may still be under the handicappers' radar and has a light weight. Race 8 (1,200m) (4) GETOFFOFMYCLOUD came from the clouds to shed her maiden last time. She can follow up. (10) DAFNES DAUGHTER has been disappointing at her last two runs but can do better. (7) MIA'S ATHENA has her second run after a lengthy break. She could surprise at best. (1) MAMAS BABY does seem to run best on the Poly but can improve on her last run.
