Farmers raise alarm over the US pressure on India to import GM feeds
Anti-GM (Genetically Modified) farmers' organisations and activists have written to the Ministry of Commerce, specifically to Piyush Goyal, urging that India should not agree to any self-certification regimes regarding the GM-Free status of American exports to India. They also strongly advised against accepting imports of GM animal feeds or alfalfa. The US government has been pressuring the Indian government to allow the import of dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) and GM alfalfa for livestock feed as part of a trade deal. Rajesh Krishnan, a farmer from Wayanad, Kerala, and Co-Convenor for the Coalition, wrote that "Self-certification declaration will also lead to import of contaminated GM produce from US to India." He also pointed out that self-certified certifications from the US will be highly unreliable as it does not maintain any segregation between GM and non-GM produce. The Coalition also objected to proposed imports for DDGS and alfalfa hay under the proposed trade deal. It highlighted that importing GM animal feed would lead to reduced prices for farmers and further decrease in domestic animal feed production. It also highlighted how GM alfalfa in the US has contaminated non-GM alfalfa, too, because of which it has had to face rejections from other countries.

First In India: Keralas Arthunkal Police Station Achieves ISO Certification
In a first of its kind in the country, a Kerala police station got certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This unique recognition has been given to the Arthunkal Police Station in Alappuzha district. It was through a two stage audit that this recognition was given and it included a quality and risk management standards were established and then verified. The efficiency in law and order management, crime investigation, implementation of modern practices in disposal of complaints, basic amenities in police stations, and conduct of police officers were among the other yardsticks considered for awarding the certification. The certificate was handed over by Praveen Khanna, Deputy Director General Southern (DDGS) Region, BIS, in the presence of State police chief Ravada A Chandrashekar, H Venkatesh, ADGP L&O, IG South Zone and other top State police officials. This recognition came as part of the ongoing Modernised Cherthala Police Programme initiated by ASP Cherthala Harish Jain, IPS. Through this, it successfully was able to hugely improve the station's performance in the areas of crime prevention, investigation, maintenance of law and order, traffic management, emergency response, judicial coordination, and public grievance redressal. These functions were found to have been carried out in accordance with the Indian legal framework, government policies, and directives, with a strong emphasis on efficiency, transparency, and public satisfaction within the jurisdiction of Arthunkal Police Station. Incidentally, this huge recognition to a Kerala Police station has come at a time when the opposition parties, the Congress-led UDF and the BJP, have raised grave issues about the worsening law and order situation in the state. The Kerala Police's actions on the shutdown observed in the state on Wednesday came under huge flak. Across the state, the striking Unions, mostly the trade union wing of the ruling CPI-M, had gone on a rampage, threatening shopkeepers, offices and establishments which decided to open on Wednesday, and none were able to resist the threats unleashed by them. On Tuesday, the police remained a mute witness when the student wing of the CPI-M-SFI activists was seen beating up police officials who tried to prevent them from creating trouble inside the Kerala University campus.

U.S. trade deal: India targetting July 8 deadline but can extend to Aug. 1 if deal specifics don't suit
The August 1 deadline for U.S. tariffs is for countries that have received letters from U.S. President Donald Trump, and so India is still operating under the July 8 deadline, according to Indian government sources, who added that a mini deal with the US could be announced 'in a day or two'. However, they also said that India will not push ahead if the deal specifics do not suit India. Mr. Trump, too, on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) said the U.S. was 'close to making a deal with India'. Midnight on July 8 marks the end of the 90-day pause Mr. Trump had announced on his April 2 'Liberation Day' tariffs of as much as 40% on other countries. Under the April 2 system, which would come back into force unless a deal with the US is finalised, tariffs on Indian imports would be 26%. Mr. Trump has already sent letters to 14 countries imposing higher tariffs in a bid to address the US' trade deficit with them. These countries so far include Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. The new tariffs would come into force from August 1, later than the earlier July 9 date. Deadline pressure 'The August 1 deadline is for countries that have been sent the letters,' a government official told The Hindu. 'India has not been sent a letter, and we are still working to finalise the deal, so the July 8-9 deadline is still what we are operating under.' This was confirmed by another official aware of the trade negotiation proceedings, who said the deal could materialise by the night of July 8, or 'in a day or two'. However, this second source also said that India could use the expanded August 1 window 'if the deal specifics do not suit us'. Mr. Trump on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) told reporters in Washington that, in the context of trade deals, the U.S. had 'spoken to everybody'. 'We have made some deals, but for the most part we are going to send a letter,' he said. 'We've made a deal with the United Kingdom, we've made a deal with China, we are close to making a deal with India. Others we met with and we don't think we are going to be able to make a deal, so we just sent them a letter.' Deal dynamics A team of Indian negotiators led by Special Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Rajesh Agrawal returned from the U.S. last week, following their second trip there. A team from the U.S. has also visited India twice in the last few months. According to sources, India has placed its final proposals before the U.S. and now the U.S. has to decide whether to accept the deal or not. India, for its part, will not further amend its proposals for the mini deal. As The Hindu has reported before, the main issues holding up a deal between India and the US continue to be genetically-modified (GM) crops and dairy. The US is pushing India to allow the import of GM products such as soybean meal and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) for animal feed. DDGS is a by-product made during ethanol production. India has not been inclined towards GM crops even produced domestically, let alone imported. Another demand is for India to allow the import of cow milk from the US, which India has been resisting.

Vietnamese Agri Trade Mission to Iowa
Ministers witnessed MoU signing between Vietnamese and Iowa agribusinesses. IOWA, US – Media OutReach Newswire – 3 June 2025 – A delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam led by Minister Do Duc Duy began a trade mission to the United States, with the first stop being Iowa. Welcoming and working with the delegation, on the side of the Iowa Department of Agriculture were Secretary Mike Naig and Deputy Secretary Grant Menke. At the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy expressed his interests to lead a delegation consisting of Vietnamese government agencies, associations and agribusinesses to visit Iowa state, known as the 'Heart of Agriculture' in the United States. With a long history of farming system, Iowa is the leading corn production in the United States, with total output of 50 million tons of corn per year. Besides, the state is also home to many other agricultural commodities such as soybean, wheat, pork and beef. 'Vietnam has become one of the world's leading agricultural exporters, contributing positively to global food security. We are constantly expanding our processing capacity, improving quality for sustainable agricultural development in Vietnam. Therefore, Vietnam and the United States can completely complement each other, jointly develop bilateral, stable and long-term agricultural supply chains,' Minister Do Duc Duy affirmed. ADVERTISEMENT At the meeting, the two sides jointly recognized and assessed the current status of agricultural trade cooperation between Vietnam and Iowa, and shared information, needs and potentials for business cooperation between the two sides. The discussion opened a substantive direction, promoting the export of high-quality agricultural products from Iowa to the Vietnamese market and vice versa. Notably, the delegation of 50 Vietnamese agribusinesses accompanying Minister Do Duc Duy to the United States this time is expected to sign MoUs to purchase over 2 billion USD of agrifood products from the United States. Particularly for the state of Iowa, businesses and associations of the two sides have signed 5 MOUs with a total value of about 800 million USD over 3 years. Those are significant deals compared to 44 million USD of agricultural exports from Iowa to Vietnam in 2024. Specifically, Vietnam's Khai Anh Binh Thuan Company signed an MoU to import one million tons of soybean meal, valued at approximately $380–390 million, from its partner Ag Processing Inc (AGP). The company also committed to purchasing 900,000 tons of corn and wheat from United Grain, valued at around $250 million. Viet Nhat Nutrition Technology Company signed a contract with POET Group to import 100,000 tons of DDGS and 100,000 tons of soybean meal, with a total value estimated at 60–70 million USD. Public–private partnership between the two countries also expanded through an MoU between the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health (under Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) and the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). Under this agreement, both sides committed to strengthening trade ties and promoting collaboration between Vietnamese and Iowa pork industry by organizing technical seminars, market promotion and trade missions. In addition, the meeting provided opportunities for many other Vietnamese and US businesses to connect, opening new avenues to enhance trade relations and strengthen the Vietnam–US agricultural supply chain linkages. These connections are expected to accelerate the transfer of advanced U.S. technologies to Vietnamese agribusinesses, paving the way toward green, smart, and sustainable agricultural development in Vietnam. Minister Do Duc Duy expressed his confidence that today's event marks the beginning of a new phase of deeper and more effective cooperation between the Vietnamese business community and the state of Iowa. He emphasized that the outcome reflects the shared goodwill of both sides to advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United #MAE The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement.
