City's ISBTs will be revamped into world-class passenger terminals: CM

In a bid to transform the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), the Delhi government announced on Tuesday that the city's three Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) – Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, and Anand Vihar – will be redeveloped into world-class passenger terminals. In a high-level meeting held by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, along with other top officials from the transport department, a slew of developments, including the introduction of a larger number of public buses, the upgradation of bus shelters, the issuance of unified travel cards, and the revamp of ISBTs, were finalised. This announcement comes after the State government noted that the severely loss-making DTC requires an overhaul. Following this, the Delhi government collaborated with IIT Delhi to rationalise routes for both the 9-metre and 12-metre Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) buses, alongside increasing the number of both fleets of buses. 'Both small and large [DEVi] buses' numbers are being increased, and the new routes are being strategically planned to enhance accessibility for commuters. Our government envisions DTC as a symbol of excellent transport service in Delhi,' she said. Stating that this plan is intended to improve bus connectivity in underserved localities and ensure better integration with metro services, Ms. Gupta said that a pilot project will be initiated in Yamuna Vihar, following which the model will be implemented across the city. The Delhi government has also decided to introduce unified smart travel cards for all modes of public transport in Delhi. 'This card will enable seamless travel across DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS),' said Ms. Gupta. She also announced that a special Pink Card for women and transgender commuters will be introduced, which will allow them free travel in DTC buses. Meanwhile, the CM also announced the modernisation of Bus Queue Shelters (BQS) across the capital. 'All BQS will be upgraded with real-time arrival displays, LED lighting, digital boards, solar power support, and weather-resistant designs,' she said.

Jun 28, 2025 05:26 AM IST Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 100 more electric buses as part of government's 'DEVI' initiative, aimed at enhancing last-mile connectivity while curbing air pollution. The saffron colour of the 100 buses prompted AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj to hit out at the BJP government. The colors of the last two fleet of the buses were green. CM said the change in the color represents the diversity of the capital. Delhi Chief Minister adds more wheels to public bus fleet

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the Delhi Transport Corporation's (DTC) biggest bus terminus in north-west Delhi, in Narela Sector A-9, on Friday. She also flagged off 105 new Delhi Electric Vehicle interconnector (DEVi) buses at the depot. She said that the transport hub will boost public transport in north-west Delhi by connecting it with several other public transport hubs in the city and termed it a 'testament to the Delhi government's commitment to strengthening public transport and building a cleaner, greener, and more connected Capital'. Currently, over 2,000 electric buses are operational in Delhi, and the government is actively working towards achieving 100% electrification of the entire transport system by 2027, she said, adding that many of the new DEVi buses will be driven by women. Ms. Gupta also attacked the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of corruption and of pushing the public transporter into huge losses. 'Buses are Delhi's lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced, and corruption was committed,' she said. Citing a Comptroller and Auditor General report, which was tabled in the Assembly in March this year, on the functioning of the DTC under AAP's tenure, the CM said that the public transporter's liabilities had bumped up from ₹28,263 crore in 2015-16 to ₹65,274 crore in 2021-22. She alleged that the AAP government's 'pink tickets' scheme, which allowed women to travel on buses free of cost, was marred by corruption and that the panic buttons were installed 'just for show'. The Opposition party did not issue a response to the allegations levelled by the CM. Built in 90 days In her address following the inauguration in Narela, the CM said, 'The depot was constructed in 90 days, reflecting the government's efficiency and dedication.' She added that the 'modern transport hub', built for ₹2.63 crore and developed over 4,000 sqm of land, has a pantry, medical facilities, clean toilets, RO water plants, and EV charging stations, among other amenities. 'It will be a hub for 75 buses, most of which will be electric, connecting north-east Delhi with other transport hubs, such as the Old Delhi railway station and Mori Gate,' said Ms. Gupta. The nine-metre low-floor, air-conditioned, wheelchair-friendly DEVi buses are equipped with panic buttons, CCTV cameras, and real-time tracking features.

Delhi government to set up unified metropolitan transport authority; cabinet proposal likely by end of this month

By Tanya Chugh New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): The Delhi government is planning to set up UMTA (Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority) to improve public transport in the state. The aim is to have better coordination among public transport agencies. It further aims to improve public transport coordination and project implementation, to streamline the public transport system by facilitating better communication and cooperation between different transport agencies. The Transport Department may present a Cabinet proposal regarding this plan by the end of this month, said top sources. The Transport Department is currently working on the entire plan. In addition, consultations are being held with the Pollution Control Board, Traffic Police, the Finance Department, and the Urban Development Department. The UMTA would act as a coordinating body which would manage and improve the public transport in the state. If the plan gets approval, it would facilitate communication and collaboration between various transport agencies to ensure a more integrated and efficient system. To enhance the public transport infrastructure, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had previously issued a new SOP. Under this, the faulty buses will be removed within 15 minutes. Cranes and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) at 30 key locations across Delhi have been deployed by DTC that monitor function to remove the faulty buses. Also, DTC has started with a new project where it aims to generate Rs 2600 crores after its depots become commercial hubs. The decision came in a bid to rescue the continuously loss-making Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Approvals have been granted for the redevelopment of Banda Bahadur Marg and Sukhdev Vihar depots, a top source to ANI. New electric buses DEVi, Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector, have also been launched by the government. A fleet of 200 new buses was flagged off by PM Narendra Modi in the national capital on 5th June on the occasion of World Environment Day. (ANI)
