Why Dollar General Stock Jumped 18% in June

Dollar General jumped on its first-quarter earnings report last month. The company benefited from its Back to Basics plan, and consumers' trading down to spend money there. It also raised its guidance for the full year. 10 stocks we like better than Dollar General › Shares of Dollar General (NYSE: DG) were among the winners last month as the discount retailer soared on better-than-expected results in its first-quarter earnings report and benefited from an upward trend in the stock market over the rest of the month. In the end, it was enough to push the retail stock up 18% for June, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. As you can see from the chart below, nearly all of the stock's gains came on the earnings report early in the month. Dollar General had historically been a strong performer on the stock market, but it plunged in 2023 as its growth and profits fell. However, the stock now seems to be regaining its footing after starting to implement its "Back to Basics" plan and benefiting from changing consumer shopping patterns. The company showed off these trends in its first-quarter earnings report as same-store sales ticked up 2.4%, driving net sales up 5.3% to $10.4 billion, which beat estimates at $10.29 billion. Dollar General benefited from initiatives it took as part of its Back to Basics plan, including reducing out-of-stocks and ensuring that the point-of-sale area was adequately staffed, but management also said that it was benefiting from consumers' trading down in an apparent response to concerns about tariffs and a weakening economy. After several quarters of declining profits, Dollar General reversed course, posting a 5.5% increase in operating profit to $576.1 million, and earnings per share was up 7.9% to $1.78, which topped the consensus at $1.49. It also raised its guidance for the year as it now sees revenue growth of 3.7% to 4.7%, up from 3.4% to 4.4%, and earnings per share of $5.20 to $5.80, up from an earlier range of $5.10 to $5.80. The rest of the month was mostly uneventful for the retailer, though Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock from buy to neutral on June 24, and the stock shrugged off that downgrade. The retailer appears to be benefiting from the current macro environment and is getting back on track after the latest report. While the company still has work to do to execute on the turnaround, Dollar General has a lot of upside potential over the long term, as the stock would double just by getting back to its previous peak. Interior minister announces prohibited bore licences for parliamentarians

Photo: Screengrab Listen to article Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced that each parliamentarian will be granted one prohibited bore licence for personal security. The announcement was made during a meeting of the Senate's Standing Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Faisal Saleem on Tuesday. The committee chair expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of arms licences being issued to parliamentarians, prompting Naqvi's response. The minister also directed the interior secretary to look into complaints regarding the performance of the DG Passports. The committee discussed security concerns, with the minister agreeing that areas with poor law and order would see an increase in licence quotas. Naqvi also announced that individuals who had paid fees but did not receive licences in the past would have their fees refunded. The committee reviewed the Pakistan Citizenship Bill 2025, with DG Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi briefing members on the proposed amendments. The amendments aim to allow overseas Pakistanis who renounced their citizenship to regain it, enabling them to invest, do business, and contribute to the country's development. During the meeting, Senator Haji Hidayatullah expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged irresponsible behaviour of the DG Passports. He complained that the DG would not answer his calls, and when he did, he failed to take action. He also claimed that the DG had disrespected his leader, Aimal Wali Khan, which he deemed unacceptable. The interior minister directed the interior secretary to investigate the matter. Moreover, Senator Fauzia Arshad raised concerns about water scarcity in the federal capital. Naqvi acknowledged that the situation at Rawal Dam was concerning and informed the committee that a task force had been formed, as per the prime minister's directives, to meet every 15 days to address Islamabad's water issues. He stated that water scarcity is a significant problem in new housing societies, many of which have been established illegally, contributing to a separate crisis. Meanwhile, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa IG Zulfikar Hameed provided a security briefing for Muharram during the meeting, revealing that, out of 35 districts in the province, eight are sensitive and six are extremely sensitive. To ensure security, 43,470 personnel are being deployed in these areas, he said, adding that surveillance has been heightened along the borders with Punjab and Balochistan, and aerial surveillance will be conducted in certain regions. The K-P IG also disclosed evidence of external interference in a recent incident, where an attempt to target a political rally in Peshawar was foiled.

Dollar General announces big store change to win back customers

Dollar General (DG) , which has over 20,000 stores across the U.S., recently spotted a concerning shift in customer behavior. In the discount retailer's first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that its same-store sales increased by 2.4% year-over-year during the first few months of this year. However, according to recent data from the average number of customer visits per Dollar General location remained flat. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter During an earnings call in June, Dollar General CEO Todd Bezos said the company recently conducted a survey that revealed its core customers are "financially constrained." Related: Dollar General suffers major boycott from customers "During our recent customer survey work, 25% of DG customers reported having less income than they did a year ago, and nearly 60% of our core customers noted that they felt the need to sacrifice on necessities in the coming year," said Bezos. "While our core customer remains financially constrained, we have seen increased trade in activity from both middle- and higher-income customers." He also warned that President Donald Trump's tariffs (taxes companies pay to import goods from overseas) could further impact consumer spending, as the trade policy could result in higher prices in Dollar General stores. "The tariff landscape remains dynamic and uncertain, and there is a higher degree of variability in potential outcomes around tariff-related impacts, including on consumer spending, cost of goods, and the supply chain," said Bezos. Image source: Bloomberg/Getty Images Amid this significant threat to sales, Dollar General has announced that it is cutting prices on over 1,000 essential items for the entire summer after it previously reduced prices on 200 products, according to a recent press release. Dollar General said the price cuts will impact 40% of the items in categories such as "food, health, and wellness products, beauty and personal care items, and household cleaning supplies." Related: Dollar General CEO flags alarming shift in customer behavior In addition to these price cuts, Dollar General is launching its "7 Days of Savings" sales event, which will offer customers discounts of up to 50% off one featured item each day between July 6 and July 12. The discount retailer will also offer back-to-school deals this summer, such as 30% off digital coupons for teachers. Dollar General customers can also expect summer promotions that include weekday $5 off $25 digital coupons. "With kids home from school, there's often additional meal prep and a desire for additional activities," said Chief Merchandising Officer Emily Taylor in a press release. "Our discount offers are designed to enhance affordability on the items our customers need and want." The move from Dollar General comes as it faces a major boycott from consumers for cutting its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. It also follows one of its top competitors, Target, deciding last month to make back-to-school shopping "more affordable" for consumers by "maintaining last year's prices on must-have supplies." Many consumers are battling a higher cost of living and worry about tariffs wreaking havoc on their finances. A recent survey from market research company Numerator found that 88% of consumers are concerned about the impact of tariffs, while 64% are worried that tariffs will raise prices on everyday goods. Also, 81% of consumers are adjusting their finances or shopping habits in response to tariffs, which includes delaying nonessential or expensive purchases, buying fewer imported goods, searching for sales and coupons, and switching to shopping at lower-priced retailers and discount stores. Curbing drug menace is not rocket science: Karnataka Home Minister

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Saturday that curbing the drug menace is not rocket science and asked the police officers to put in focused efforts. He also conducted a progress review and then addressed the officers. On the issue of drug control, he said that the Chief Minister has issued strict directions. 'Curbing the drug menace is not rocket science. The department has sufficient strength. Investigating officers must involve themselves deeply in drug-related cases. In any case, the prime accused must never be spared,' he said while addressing officers on the second day of the senior police officers' annual review meeting held at the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG and IGP). 'Different districts face different kinds of problems. Officers must work on the ground. Issues such as hate crimes and communal clashes may arise. Festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Muharram come with their own challenges. If officers don't observe these challenges firsthand, what is the point?' he questioned. Referring to crimes against Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and children, he noted that the conviction rate remains low. Investigating officers must consult public prosecutors and take necessary guidance. 'Some officers are not following this, and this is one of the reasons why accused persons are escaping the law,' he warned. 'To prevent atrocities against SC and ST communities, 33 DCRE (District Crime Record and Enforcement) police stations have been set up across the state. These must be made effective,' he said. Parameshwara added that if the 'Police at Your Doorstep' initiative is successfully implemented, the Karnataka Police Department will earn national recognition. 'When police visit homes, they understand the issues in their respective station jurisdictions. This also helps in preventing crimes,' he said. Parameshwara stressed that many key issues of the Police Department must be discussed. Expert consultations should be held regarding various problems, and appropriate suggestions should be sought to aid investigations. The structure of the annual review meeting should be redesigned with this aim in mind. District-level progress reviews are already being conducted at the Range level. At the annual conference, it is enough to present state-level data, he added. 'New technologies must be adopted. Karnataka Police should set an example for the rest of the country,' Parameshwara stated. He further added that the police must work more effectively, in line with the expectations of the government and the public. 'When citizens come to the station, their complaints should be accepted without making them run around repeatedly. Police must respond in a people-friendly manner,' he said. He further stated that officers and personnel of the police department must be provided with advanced technological training. Senior officers must think seriously and act accordingly.
