Crush insurgents for Balochistan peace: Azma

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari on Saturday urged that the insurgency in Balochistan be curbed to ensure peace and prosperity. Expressing solidarity with the families of the nine passengers killed in Loralai, Balochistan on Thursday, she emphasised the urgent need to crush violent elements. She berated "so-called human rights champions", adding they raise their voices for every oppressed group, "but when Punjabis are being killed, everyone turns a blind eye". Speaking at a news conference at DGPR, she labelled PTI as merely a "champion of chaos," and claimed that the party was planning to misuse public funds to support their movement. In an obvious reference to PTI founder Imran Khan, Azma said, "He built one hospital on his mother's name, but neither constructed any new hospitals nor improved existing ones". She clarified that the health card scheme is still operational in private hospitals while over 9.3 million citizens have benefited from field hospitals. She announced to reconstruct Lady Willingdon Hospital on international standards to better serve mothers and children. Azma praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's special focus on the healthcare sector, saying, "Health is Maryam Nawaz's first and foremost priority". Projects such as Nawaz Sharif Cardiac Hospital in Sargodha, Cancer Hospitals, and Field Hospitals reflect the government's commitment. She also noted that free medicines are now being provided in public hospitals. Commenting on the sewerage issues in rain-affected areas, Azma said, "It's not possible to install sewerage lines in every street, but the administration remains highly active". Condemning threats to MPAs, she stated, "PTI only knows how to do protest politics. We didn't respond to such threats in the past, and we won't do it now either". The minister also shared that a housing project with 50,000 units was being launched to provide shelter to every citizen. She pointed out that those targeting Punjabis in Balochistan were aiming to destabilise the country. The state must deal with them with an iron hand — without this, the dream of peace and prosperity will remain unfulfilled.

Pakistan Navy urges ‘result-oriented' collective actions as world marks Oceans Day

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy on Sunday urged 'result-oriented' collective actions to safeguard oceans against pollution, over-fishing and climate change, its Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR) said, on the occasion of the World Oceans Day. World Oceans Day is observed on June 8 each year and this year's theme is 'Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,' which resonates with the oceans' vital role in underpinning all life on earth. Covering over 70 percent of Earth, oceans are a key source of oxygen, a regulator of climate and immeasurably support biodiversity, all of which are essential to global livelihoods. As the principal custodian of Pakistan's maritime domain, the navy said, it is undertaking substantive initiatives like implementing remedial measures for preventing oil spills at sea, enforcing pollution control measures and banning destructive fishing nets to encourage healthy practices and sustainable use of ocean resources. 'World Oceans Day calls upon us to move beyond the reflexive acknowledgment and take result-oriented collective actions,' the navy quoted its Public Relations director-general as saying. 'To this end, I call upon all the stakeholders to join hands with Pakistan Navy and adopt safe and sustainable practices to secure our oceans' vitality. Collectively, we can avail this immense endowment in the shape of our rich oceans, preserve their enduring majesty and secure the lifeblood they provide, for our future generations.' The statement came ahead of a United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference in Nice, France on June 9-13, which will not only focus on accelerating actions for conservation and sustainable use of oceans but also identify ways to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources by building partnerships. 'For Pakistan, our long coastline and rich marine resources constitute a national trust. This vital treasure trove of biodiversity is facing rapid deterioration and demands immediate and robust intervention by all stakeholders,' the navy said. 'Recognizing our obligation to the environment, Pakistan Navy is also instilling ecological ethos through awareness drives and crucial partnerships. To mark the occasion, National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) has organized one day international seminar to create awareness about the issue and highlight ways and means to protect our oceans.'

Punjab gears up for safe, clean Eid

The Punjab government has launched an extensive security and sanitation operation across the province to ensure public safety and maintain hygiene during the three-day religious festival. A centralised coordination system involving the Home Department, police, local governments and waste management companies has been activated. Officials say the integrated effort aims to deliver a safe and clean environment for citizens celebrating Eid. A round the clock Central Control Room has been established in Lahore under the supervision of the Punjab Home Secretary. The Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR), the control room will monitor all districts around the clock and coordinate law enforcement efforts and government directives. Enforcement of Section 144 has been put in place in several areas of the province. The orders prohibit public slaughter of animals, swimming or boating in rivers, canals, or dams, and the disposal of animal waste into manholes or waterways. Additional bans include the use of fireworks, drones, laser lights, pigeon flying, and installation of temporary mechanical rides within a 15-kilometre radius of any airport or airbase. The home department also announced a crackdown on unauthorised collection of animal hides. "No proscribed organisation will be allowed to collect hides," a spokesperson stated. Only registered and certified charities with the Punjab Charity Commission will be permitted to do so. Lahore police have finalised an elaborate security plan for Eid, deploying over 9,000 personnel across the city. The operation will be supervised by 6 Superintendents of Police (SPs), 22 Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), and 83 Station House Officers (SHOs). The Dolphin and PRU forces will be on high alert, with more than 1,600 officers in the field, supported by 700 traffic officers to manage Eid traffic. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority will monitor Eid congregations, mosques, and imambargahs through surveillance systems. "All religious gatherings will be under close watch, and any violation of the government's directives will result in strict action," said Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq described the sanitation plan as a "challenge," particularly as over 360,000 tons of animal waste are expected across the province during Eid. Speaking at a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat, the minister said the targets set by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz were "ambitious but achievable." To tackle the enormous cleanup task, 11.69 million biodegradable bags will be distributed. Over 124,000 sanitation workers, supported by 15,204 temporary recruits, will work under the Suthra Punjab programme. The operation will utilise 125,794 machines and vehicles, in addition to the existing 29,638 sanitation units. Officials have designated 3,870 primary collection points and 4,262 union council-level camps, along with 1,661 collective slaughter sites to discourage public slaughtering. To monitor cleanliness in real time, all waste management and municipal offices have established local control rooms, while the central control room in Lahore will oversee the province-wide operation. "There will be zero tolerance for negligence," said Minister Rafiq. "Photographic evidence of all cleaning activities must be submitted and public awareness campaigns must include participation from elected local representatives." Following Eid, authorities will spray rose water and phenyl on roads for sanitation. Additionally, 2.83 million kilograms of lime will be used to disinfect affected areas. Evening roadside sales of sacrificial animals have been strictly prohibited, and officials have been directed to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance. "No reports of livestock-related diseases or dengue have been received so far," Minister Rafiq noted, confirming that Livestock, Municipal, and District Administration officers are working in close coordination. As the province gears up for the Eid holidays, the Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe, hygienic, and peaceful environment for all citizens.
