Need for collective efforts to combat drug abuse emphasised
Director of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (DIMHANS) Arunkumar Chavan has stressed the need for collective efforts to combat drug addiction and for the creation of a healthy society.
Speaking at an awareness programme held as part of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at DIMHANS on Thursday, Dr. Chavan highlighted the significance of observing this international day each year.
He said that it is essential to organise extensive awareness programmes on drug abuse. While recovery is always possible, it is equally important to stop before getting addicted. He clarified that rehabilitation is not punishment but a path of hope.
Dr. Chavan suggested breaking the chain of addiction by investing in preventive strategies such as school-based awareness programmes, family education, positive role models, early intervention and sustained support.
Delivering a special lecture, Mahesh M. elaborated on the multifaceted nature of drug addiction and the critical role healthcare providers play in addressing the menace.
Emphasising the role of pharmacists in preventing drug abuse, he said that as frontline healthcare professionals, pharmacists are in a unique position to collaborate with prescribers and mental health professionals and monitor prescriptions.
They can detect misuse patterns and counsel patients on the safe use, storage, and disposal of medications, especially high-risk drugs such as opioids, sedatives and stimulants, he said.
The pharmacy community should remain vigilant and proactive in their duties, he said and underlined their critical role in addressing this growing public health challenge.
