Pakistan, Russia agree to enhance ties in trade, energy, defence sectors

Pakistan and Russia have agreed to further enhance cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture and defence sectors. This understanding came at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, China. During the meeting, both the dignitaries expressed satisfaction over the positive trajectory of bilateral ties, DPM's Office said. On this occasion, the foreign minister reiterated the invitation for FM Lavrov to visit Pakistan. FM Dar met Chinese President Xi Jinping as well at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and conveyed him the warm greetings of the leadership, government and people of Pakistan. 'As iron-clad brothers and all-weather strategic cooperative partners, we remain committed to deepening Pak-China enduring friendship and advancing shared regional goals,' Dar wrote in a post on X. The meeting between the foreign minister and Chinese president was held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dar also represented Pakistan at the joint call of the Foreign Ministers of the SCO Member States on President Xi. The Chinese president, welcoming the heads of delegations, underlined the salience of regional cooperation under the ambit of SCO, an organisation covering the Eurasian land mass and a large expanse of the world's population, Radio Pakistan reported. Senator Dar arrived in Beijing, China, on Monday to attend a three-day meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers being held in Tianjin, China. He is attending the event at the invitation of Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi.

In his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, both the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening of bilateral relations and agreed to meet again next week during SCO council of Ministers meeting, a DPM's Office statement said. Dar also met Australian Foreign Minister Senator Hon Penny Wong. They reiterated strong Pakistan-Australia ties and commitment to enhance cooperation in trade, education, and people-to-people links. In a "productive and forward-looking engagement," he said Pakistani diaspora and cricket were a living bridge between the countries. Both sides agreed to boost bilateral trade, currently at $1.186 billion, promote academic partnerships, and increase high-level political exchanges. Separately, Dar met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and reaffirmed the enduring strength of Pakistan-Sri Lanka bilateral relations. During the meeting, both ministers expressed satisfaction over the robustness of ties between the two countries and pledged to further deepen cooperation in key areas. The discussions focused on high-level political exchanges, expanding economic partnerships, religious tourism, and educational collaboration, a DPM's Office statement said. Dar emphasized the importance of promoting people-to-people contacts and sectoral cooperation, noting that the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is rooted in shared regional interests and historical bonds. The two ministers also held in-depth discussions on regional and global developments, including recent geopolitical shifts in South Asia and beyond. They agreed on the need to strengthen multilateral collaboration and continue supporting peace, stability, and inclusive growth across the region.

Dar in UAE to lead 12th JMC session

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday arrived in the UAE for the 12th session of Pakistan-UAE Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC). The session will be held in Abu Dhabi today. The 12th session of the Pak-UAE JMC is being held after 13 years, following its scheduling in October 2024. The last session was held in Islamabad from 6-7 Nov 2013. The JMC serves as the highest institutionalised platform for bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE, a DPM's Office statement said. The session will take forward the agenda of deepening strategic, economic and development cooperation between the two brotherly countries. Pakistan delegation led by the DPM/FM comprises secretaries and senior officials from key ministries including economic affairs, commerce, energy, maritime affairs and interior. The UAE side will be led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan along with high-level representation from relevant Emirati institutions. The session will review progress across multiple domains of bilateral cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration in trade, investment, energy, infrastructure development and IT. A number of legal instruments are expected to be finalized during the session to institutionalize sectoral cooperation. The session will provide an important opportunity for both sides to align their economic priorities and unlock the potential of enhancing scope of mutually beneficial partnership. BEIJING: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Wednesday emphasised that resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions was essential for lasting peace in South Asia, as he met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing. In a high-level meeting held in Beijing, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed their nations' enduring partnership and shared commitment to regional stability, a DPM's Office news release said. During the meeting, Dar reiterated Pakistan's deep appreciation for China's consistent support, particularly in defending Pakistan's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to self-defence. China says it backs Pakistan in defending 'sovereignty' He reaffirmed Islamabad's unwavering backing for China on its core issues and expressed a strong desire to further deepen the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership. Central to Dar's remarks was the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He stressed that a peaceful resolution of the issue, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, is vital for enduring peace in South Asia. Foreign Minister Wang Yi welcomed Dar to Beijing and described Pakistan as China's 'ironclad friend' and a valued strategic partner. He praised Pakistan's steadfast stance on national sovereignty and emphasized China's ongoing commitment to supporting Pakistan's development and regional role. The two sides discussed a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues, reviewing the positive trajectory of ties between their countries. They agreed to bolster cooperation in trade, agriculture, ICT, and industrialisation, and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), particularly Phase-II and its growing potential through third-party participation. Both leaders committed to maintaining close coordination on international platforms and pledged joint efforts to promote peace, development, and mutual prosperity across the region. Pakistan, Russia reaffirm to boost ties

Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan's strong commitment to its ties with Russia. He was talking to Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Ryabkov, who called on him Thursday. It was agreed to pursue a long-term, multi-dimensional partnership spanning trade, energy, security, culture, education and people-to-people exchanges, said a news release by the DPM's Office. The two countries have been steadily building trust since the end of Cold War. Russia is one of the biggest exporters of oil, gas, gold and wheat in the world. Pakistan badly needs all these items.
