ITIs register lowest applications in nearly a decade

The Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) has released the first allotment list for admissions to Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state, revealing a continuous decline in applications, reaching the lowest point in nearly a decade, this year. According to DVET data, 1,73,673 students completed the application process for 1,46,820 seats available across 992 ITI institutes in the state - 94,296 in government-run institutes and 52,524 in private institutions. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) A total of 2,20,291 students registered for ITI courses this year, significantly down from 3,15,364 in 2023 and 3,08,439 in 2022. This is the lowest registration figure recorded since 2017. According to DVET data, 1,73,673 students completed the application process for 1,46,820 seats available across 992 ITI institutes in the state - 94,296 in government-run institutes and 52,524 in private institutions. Of these, 82,822 students have secured admission in the first round, released on July 7, based on the final merit list published earlier on July 1. The first-round admissions reflect an overall occupancy of 61.52%, with government ITIs witnessing a stronger response - 70.71% of seats filled - compared to just 40.02% in private institutions. Among these, 66,680 students were admitted to government ITIs, and 16,142 to private institutes. Nashik topped the chart with 16,571 admissions, followed by Pune (15,739), Aurangabad (14,642), Amravati (13,609), and Nagpur (12,412). Mumbai recorded the lowest admissions, with just 10,363 students allotted seats in the first round. Out of the total applicants, 2,06,109 completed the application, with 2,03,227 paying the fees. However, only 1,67,996 submitted their option forms for institute preferences - a sharp decline from over 2.4 lakh in previous years, highlighting growing disinterest among students in vocational training. The ITI admission process began on May 15, with preference filling from May 26, and concluded with the release of the provisional merit list on June 28, followed by an objection window from June 29-30. Industry voices call for course revamp The declining trend has raised concerns within industry circles. Prashant Girbane, director general of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), stressed the urgent need for ITIs to revamp and modernise their curriculum to meet industry demands. 'In today's rapidly evolving knowledge era, the speed at which skills become outdated is high. ITIs must frequently update their courses to remain relevant,' Girbane said. He added that MCCIA is in active discussions with the state department of skills to ensure stronger industry-institute collaboration. 'Soon, a high-level meeting will be held to bring together industry stakeholders and the department to align training programmes with current job market requirements. Mechanical roles now demand electromechanical or mechatronic skills. The curriculum needs urgent upgrades,' he said.

Drop in ITI admissions as job prospects shrink; students opt for new age skills

Pune: Govt-run industrial training institutes across Maharashtra have witnessed a sharp decline in applications this year, reflecting a growing concern among students over shrinking job opportunities in vocational trades. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the directorate of vocational education and training (DVET), the number of applications for centralised ITI admissions for the academic year 2025-26 dropped to 1,67,996 from 1,96,048 in 2024-25 and 2,18,697 in 2023-24. The downward trend has been consistent since 2018-19 when applications were above 3 lakh. Interestingly, the number of high-scoring students opting for ITIs also decreased. This year, only 22 students, who scored between 95% and 99.99% in their Secondary School Certificate exam, took admission in ITIs, while 541 students with above 90% chose this route. In comparison, more than 1,200 students, who scored more than 90%, opted for ITIs in 2024. "The job market for traditional trades has slowed down, and many industries are preferring multi-skilled or tech-oriented candidates. This has directly impacted the perception and popularity of ITI courses among meritorious students," an official from DVET said. Region-wise data shows that Pune has the highest intake capacity with 28,276 seats across 190 ITIs, followed closely by Nashik with 28,640 seats. Despite the availability of seats, many remain vacant due to the reduced interest. While many top scorers have shifted focus to junior colleges and emerging professional courses, some students still choose ITIs for specialised skills. Shubham Jadhav, a 92% scorer from Nashik, said, "I chose an ITI because I wanted to learn electric vehicle maintenance and smart automation systems. I believe these new-age courses can open different career paths for me rather than just chasing traditional degrees. " Officials have expressed concern that if the trend continues, the very purpose of skill-based vocational education might get diluted, further affecting the state's skilled workforce pipeline.

From AI to EV Management: ITIs to offer 6 new courses from this academic year

Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Maharashtra will offer six new courses which are in line with evolving market demands, from the academic year 2025-26. These courses are Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electric Vehicle (EV) Management, Industrial Robotics and 3D Printing, Drone Technology, and Solar Technician. Announcing the new courses on Thursday, Maharashtra's Minister of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovations Mangal Prabhat Lodha said, 'These courses reflect the changing technological landscape and the need for skilled professionals in emerging sectors. ITI students will now have the opportunity to gain hands-on training in cutting-edge technologies that are reshaping our economy.' Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) plans to offer these courses in at least 50 out of 415 ITIs from the upcoming academic year, which starts in June. Director of DVET Satish Suryawanshi said, 'The plan is to start these courses in all ITIs but it will be done in phases as adequate infrastructure needs to be arranged first… The first 50 ITIs in focus are those running on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, having their own funding, due to which the process of making arrangements can be completed in the remaining time. In due course of time, all other ITIs will have these courses.' Suryawanshi pointed out that 25 ITIs, which are run entirely by the government, will start offering two courses – Drone Technology and Solar Technician – on priority. 'Considering the state government's vision to become not only self-reliant but global leader in drone and solar technology, there is going to be great need of trained manpower in these industries,' said Surywanshi who highlighted that drone technology and robotics are the two trades which have become essential irrespective of the type of industry making these courses very relevant for the changing market needs. He said, 'Whether in agricultural tasks or for security reasons, drone technology and robotics have become very important now along with AI. Additionally, in the near future we are going to see a significant increase in use of electric vehicles. Considering the changing market needs, new courses are curated by professionals.'
