Joel Dahmen leads Wyndham Championship with a 61 in bid to make postseason
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Joel Dahmen started his long-shot bid to make the PGA Tour postseason by closing with three straight birdies for a 9-under 61 on Thursday to match his career best and give him a one-shot lead over Alex Noren in the Wyndham Championship. The Wyndham Championship is the final tournament in the regular season, with the top 70 in the FedEx Cup advancing to the lucrative postseason filled with potential perks. Dahmen is 101st in the standings and would need a runner-up finish with no more than two other players to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs. He was happy with the start — 10 birdies on a dry course at Sedgefield — and also realistic about his chances of playing next week in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He has one victory and three runner-up finishes in 231 tournaments. 'I mean, I've had like three top 2s in my career — I don't know, four of them, maybe?' he said. 'I mean, it's not even a thing, right? Yeah, great to make the playoffs, hat would be unbelievable, give me a lot of time off this fall. We've got a baby coming so that would take some pressure off of that. 'The playoffs are a bonus for me,' he said. 'I'm just going to go out and try to play good golf, and I guess if I play really well, then I get to play another week.' Dahmen also shot 61 in the second round of the RSM Classic in 2020. Noren missed six months with a hamstring tear and can't reach the postseason even with a win. The four players at 63 included Mark Hubbard, who is at No. 98 and who also would need a runner-up finish to advance. Hubbard was joined by Cameron Young, defending champion Aaron Rai and Nico Echavarria, who at No. 65 needs to hold his position. 'I think t's all about how you look at it. For me I think it kind of takes the pressure off because it's really hard to do that and it's not something that you're really thinking about,' Hubbard said. 'I've just got to go play super well and make a ton of birdies. If that happens to fall into place that way, then that's great. 'I think it's easier than if I had to top-15 or top-10 because that way you're always looking at the board … where this week I've just got to go out and play as good as I can.' Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott have different objectives this week and wound up with the same score at 65. Spieth had four birdies over his last five holes. He is set for the postseason at No. 50, but wants to help take the pressure off when he gets to Memphis, Tennessee. The top 50 after the first playoff event not only advance to the next week, they are guaranteed to get in all the $20 million signature events. Spieth missed out last year, then had wrist surgery, and had to ask for exemptions into the signature events. Scott, however, is at No. 85 and would need at least third place to reach the postseason. 'I'm going to need to get like 20 under to think of anything, so I better not be 1 under through day one or I'm going to leave myself a lot of work,' Scott said. 'So nice to make a few birdies. And of course as much as I think about moving on, I'd like to win this tournament.' Also at stake this week is the first FedEx Cup bonus pool — $10 million to the points leader (Scottie Scheffler) and $4 million for second place (Rory McIlroy), which they both have wrapped up. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley is at No. 10 and would pick up $500,000 if he can stay there. Bradley bogeyed his last two holes for a 68. He played with Ben Griffin (67) and Andrew Novak (68), who both have Ryder Cup hopes. ___ AP golf:

Seamus Power's FedEx Cup play-off push derailed by back-nine woes at Wyndham Championship
Waterford's Seamus Power shot an opening round of one-under-par at the Wyndham Championship, the final regular season event on the PGA Tour, as Joel Dahmen tied the lowest round of his career with a nine-under-par 61 to set the early pace. Two-time tour winner Power was left feeling the cost of a sloppy back nine where he made bogeys on 10, 11 and 14; halting his small playoff chances in quick time. The 38-year-old needs a win to make the last 70 and the opening event of the post season, the FedEx St Jude Championship, but now finds himself eight shots back of the lead after day one. FULL LEADERBOARD Power got himself off to a fast start at Sedgefield Country Club, rolling in short birdie putts on the second and fifth holes. This was followed with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine, as he posted an impressive four-under-par front nine, but he was unable to keep that pace up. Dahmen too needs a strong showing at the regular-season finale, A win would vault him from No. 101 in the standings all the way to 48th. Dahmen holds just a one-stroke advantage over Sweden's Alex Noren, who turned in an eight-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club. Four players were tied for third at 63: American pair Cameron Young, Mark Hubbard, Colombia's Nico Echavarria and defending champion Aaron Rai of England.

PGA Tour Fan Favorite Shoots Season-Low Round to Take Lead At Wyndham
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Joel Dahmen knows all too well the pain of being close to losing his PGA Tour card. But he also knows how to handle the stress and maintain his full status, even when it happens at the last second. Dahmen, one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour, is currently completely out of the FedEx Cup playoffs. He'd likely need a win at the Wyndham Championship to open a spot for himself in the top 70, and he seems determined to get it. The 37-year-old fired a 9-under 61 during the first round of the Wyndham Championship to take the clubhouse lead with the round yet to finish. It's the best round of the season for Dahmen, whose previously low was 62 at the Corales Puntacana Championship. "It was really good," Dahmen said, according to the transcripts of his post-round interview. "Drove it in the rough a couple holes early but got away with a couple of them and then hit a ton of fairways after that and hit the numbers I was trying to and rolled in a few putts. So it was as basic as it gets, but typically when you do all those things, it adds up to a really low score." Joel Dahmen of the United States hits his tee shot on the ninth hole during the first round of the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on February 10, 2022 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Joel Dahmen of the United States hits his tee shot on the ninth hole during the first round of the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on February 10, 2022 in Scottsdale, Arizona.A win would give Dahmen his PGA Tour card for the next two seasons, while qualifying for the playoffs would guarantee his membership for the following year. In either case, he would be exempt from having to play in the fall for the first time since 2022. "Great to make the playoffs, that would be unbelievable, give me a lot of time off this fall," he said, according to the transcripts. "We've got a baby coming so that would take some pressure off of that. The playoffs are a bonus for me. I'm just going to go out and try to play good golf, and I guess if I play really well, then I get to play another week." A year ago, Dahmen had to play until the final tournament of the FedEx Cup Fall to keep his PGA Tour card. Even so, he managed to it almost at the limit of his capabilities, finishing second to last in the top 125. Dahmen has never qualified for the Tour Championship, the final stage of the playoffs. In 2019 and 2020, he reached the second stage (BMW Championship), while he has played in the first tournament several times, most recently in 2022. Again fighting for card, but with a different caddie, Joel Dahmen shoots 61 at Wyndham Championship
Listen to Jordan Spieth interview live from Sedgefield on Golf Today as he tries to spark a run to the playoffs currently sitting in 50th in the FedExCup standings. Joel Dahmen likened his chances of making the playoffs to his beloved Seattle Seahawks needing to win by 50 points to do the same. Dahmen's given himself a chance, however, thanks to a 9-under 61 in the opening round of the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour's regular-season finale. He entered the week 101st in FedExCup points, with the top 70 earning a spot next week in Memphis. As the current outright leader in Greensboro, North Carolina, Dahmen is projected to jump inside the top 50. 'Thursday's a long ways from Sunday,' Dahmen said. 'I've been here a lot, so just happy to get off to a good start and, yeah, we'll see where things fall.' It's been a odd few weeks for the 37-year-old. He split from his longtime caddie, Geno Bonnalie, ahead of the Barracuda Championship, and then tied for 17th – his first top-50 finish since collapsing in April's Corales Puntacana Championship, where he bogeyed his final three holes to lose by one. Last week presented a few more closing challenges. Dahmen shot 67-65 in the 3M Open but doubled the par-5 18th in Round 3 to lose ground with a 71. He was on pace to post a nice bounce-back number Sunday, but hit two in the water at 18 in making triple bogey. A tie for 39th cost him two spots in the FEC standings, dropping him outside the fully-exempt cut line. While the playoffs would be a 'bonus,' Dahmen's primary goal is keeping his card. He made a final-event run last year to finish No. 124, when the top 125 earned playing privileges for this season. That benchmark has been reduced to the top 100, and Dahmen finds himself around the cutoff again. With his longtime coach, Rob Rashell, currently serving as caddie, Dahmen made 10 birdies and one bogey Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club. 'Man, I love Geno. We still text almost daily. He's doing well. Yeah, I mean, I miss him but sometimes the hardest — you have to do something hard to — look, it wasn't an easy decision. I won't say I'm not happy about it but, like, it's hard. He's my best friend, he's still my best friend,' Dahmen said. 'But I had to change something with me. It was more about me. It was my mentality, it was what I was doing, and I need to take ownership of what I was doing. I was not doing a good job of that. So a way for me to do it is as simple as just playing golf on my own a little bit. So yeah, I love him, I miss him. I think we'll see him out here again soon.' Alex Noren, No. 141 in FEC points, is one back after a 62. Cameron Young, seeking his first PGA Tour win and No. 40 in the standings, is tied for third at 7 under, along with Aaron Rai and Nico Echavarria. Jordan Spieth, No. 50, and Adam Scott, No. 85, are in a group three back.
